SEDAKA'S BACK: When it comes to Clay Aiken's new single, it looks like "Solitaire" is the only game in town.

Aiken's version of the Neil Sedaka/Phil Cody song debuts on Billboard's Hot 100 at No. 4. That comes as a surprise to many of Aiken's fans, who expected "The Way" to be the song that entered the Hot 100 this week.

"The Way" does show up as the B-side of the commercial single on the Hot 100 Singles Sales tally, where "Solitaire" / "The Way" debuts at No. 1.

"The Way" was the intended A-side of Aiken's second commercial single, following his first release, "This Is the Night" / "Bridge Over Troubled Water." The song "Invisible" was promoted to radio after "This Is the Night," but wasn't released as a commercial single.

For the B-side of Aiken's second commercial single, RCA elected "Solitaire," a track that had been recorded for Aiken's "Measure of a Man" album. Aiken performed "Solitaire" on "American Idol" last year, so fans were disappointed when the Sedaka/Cody song didn't make the final cut for "Measure of a Man."

One-track promotional singles of "The Way" were sent to radio in advance of the commercial single release date. The song received a small amount of spins, but not enough to register on the Hot 100 Airplay chart.

But the tide began to turn in favor of "Solitaire," which Aiken performed when he guest starred on the March 17 episode of "American Idol." "Solitaire" sold more paid digital downloads than "The Way," enough to debut on Billboard's Hot Digital Trackschart at No. 19, while "The Way" did not make the chart. Finally, RCA stopped promoting "The Way" to radio, deciding to push "Solitaire" instead.

No one was more surprised than Sedaka, who also expected "The Way" to be the title that appeared on the Hot 100. The songwriter received the news while on a skiing vacation in Canada. The debut of "Solitaire" gives Sedaka a songwriting chart span of 45 years, eight months and one week, dating back to the debut of Connie Francis' "Stupid Cupid" the week of July 28, 1958. By debuting at No. 4, "Solitaire" is the highest-ranked song composed by Sedaka since the Captain & Tennille peaked at No. 3 the week of March 27, 1976 with "Lonely Night (Angel Face)."

"Solitaire" is the highest-debuting song of 2004 on the Hot 100. Since current chart rules went into effect in December 1998, six songs have debuted in the top 10. In order of highest position, they are:

No. 1: "This Is the Night," Clay Aiken (2003)
No. 2: "Flying Without Wings," Ruben Studdard (2003)
No. 4: "God Bless the U.S.A.," American Idol Finalists (2003)
No. 4: "Solitaire," Clay Aiken (2004)
No. 5: "Lost in You," Garth Brooks as Chris Gaines (1999)
No. 8: "Get Over Yourself," Eden's Crush (2001)

Last week, Kimberley Locke became the first "American Idol" finalist to debut at No. 1 on the Hot 100 Singles Sales chart when "8th World Wonder" (Curb) opened in pole position. This week, Aiken becomes the second "Idol" finalist to debut at No. 1 on that tally.
