Hey Don!
Here's an article about Kyla that says it all . .
#1: The Queen & the Princess
by Jojo P. Panaligan
As if to prove that she really is placing her bet on Kyla to succeed the
throne she currently occupies, Philippine's Queen Diva Regine Velasquez
allowed a rare back-to-back stint with the R&B Princess last month in the
"Crossover Presents" special held at the Mandarin Hotel.
It should be noted that the last time Asia's Songbird shared the stage with
a local female artist was two years ago (with Jaya in "Independent Women").
So did Kyla live up to the anointment? Yes. Though the R&B Princess still
has a lot to work on (presence of mind, rapport with the audience and
effective spiels), her potential shone through given the outstanding vocal
abilities.
In such numbers as the R&B midtempo "Come A Little Bit Closer" (Brandy),
the gospel-influenced "Fallin" (Alicia Keys), and the inspirational ballad
"Through The Rain" (Mariah Carey), the R&B Princess wowed the elite crowd
with the versatility and vocal command that go beyond her title.
Especially noteworthy was Kyla's breath taking version "My Funny
Valentine." Here, the singer belted out notes very few are aware she could
still reach. We also appreciated her veering away from the scaling
technique R&B tunes usually require of her. Instead, she harkened to a more
mature vocal discipline the standard demanded. The result was reminiscent
of her lounge days as Melanie Calumpad (Kyla's real name).
As for Regine, she was unusually lowkeyed with her repertoire. In truth,
most of the tunes she rendered were ones she already did last year during
her first "Crossover Presents" performance. To her credit, she delivered
this time on her promise not to belt out as much. In numbers as "Long
Lonely Afternoon," "Mind On My Man" (where she whistled on the solo
instrumental part) and "Never Give Up," people who came for the birits were
disappointed.
Two points, though: First, "At Your Best You Are Love" (Aaliyah), "Burn"
(Tina Arena) and "Runaway" (The Corrs) should've been stricken off the set
list. We feel that the show would've been more consistent show had Regine
stuck to middle-of-the-road favorites instead of dipping into pop.
Second, Regine should keep herself from getting affected by technical
problems. In the middle of the show, Asia's Songbird put on a sour
expression upon realizing that the set list was missing.
We understand that it's tough keeping cool when the star of the show is
made to appear ignorant of her repertoire. But, really, she could've
handled the mishap more graciously at least for her public image's sake.
Then of course the show ended as expected: With an ear-shattering duet (of
Mariah Carey's "Butterfly").
In retrospect, the Regine and Kyla tandem was what it was set up to be. To
show why she's Queen, and why the other is Princess.
(On July 5 and 12, 105.1 Crossover debuts its latest series dubbed
"Crossover Lounge" at Discovery Suite. The maiden show bills Asia's
Nightingale Lani Misalucha)
NOTE: Someone needs to tell Jojo the writer that Lani isn't
called ASIA'S NIGHTINGALE ANYMORE. lolz.. After we posted
in these boards why she shouldn't be her camp changed her
nick call.

Remember fans.. the Manila Bulletin entertainment
section has a writer who is supporting a Regine
distractor. Take some of the word coming from there
with just a grain of salt when it comes to the truth.
