REGINE SHINES
by: Ailyn E. Agonia

Once upon a time, there was a young, boyish-looking timid girl who dreamt of
showing off her singing prowess in front of the camera. And what better way to
realize that dream than to compete in "Bagong Kampeon"-no less than the
country's premier and institutional singing competition on live television then.
She went home with the grand prize.

Today, the singing sensation is dominating the airwaves...wowing both local
and international audiences. The shy girl from Bulacan has spread her wings, and
is soaring even higher.

Regina Encarnacion Ansong Velasquez started out in show business at 16. At
that age, staying up late or reporting for work at the wee hours became a normal
part of her daily routine. She says she can't even remember any adjustment she
had been forced to make to fit into the entertainment scene. It was all just
that, work-a commodity most precious for he girl who was only well aware of the
rough times her family was going through at that time.

Back then, the Velasquezes were just another statistics. Regine and her
siblings had their fair share of insecurities and envy for the kids their age
who had abundant resources and the luxury of time. To their credit, rather than
decry what they don't have, the young Velasquezes focused their attention on
improving themselves and bettering their lives.

Despite those early years, Regine believes she and her siblings have not at
all been deprived as children. "I have fond memories of my childhood regardless
of the things that we weren't able to enjoy. I believe we were more fortunate
than [some] others because our parents gave us proper guidance and motivation
that served as our inspiration. The values they instilled in us have armed us in
surviving the game of life. [Moreover,] there was so much love in the family
that we were barely bothered by the meekness of our lifestyle," she recounts.

It has been several years, and the tide has turned in the Velasquezes'
favor. Far from their humble beginnings, Regine's hard labor has finally paid
off. She now owns a mansion-her own "palasyo"-in Bulacan. But more than the
material things she had hoped for as recognition of loving audiences here and
abroad.

Amidst the triumphs, hit songs, countless music awards-both local and
international-and a box-office title to her name, Regine is quick to contend
that she still has her two feet on the ground.

Sixteen years of showbusiness. And how is Regine Velasquez now?

She considers the question and smiles. "I'd like to think I'm still the same
Regine who dreams of simple things and hopes for simple joys. I mean, when
people see me on TV or while I'm performing on stage, what they see is the
glamorous side of me. I could have improved my personality and some of my
perceptions over my stay in this business; but behind the makeup and fancy
clothes is a plain girl on duster and rubber slippers. Plain and simple is how I
have always described myself. And I will remain that way."

THE VOICE FROM BULACAN

"I have always wanted to be a singer. As early as [when I was] four, I knew
I wanted to sing and perform in front of people," Regine recalls.

For a shy girl who looks up to the likes of Barbra Streisand, Mariah Carey,
Whitney Houston and our very own Kuh Ledesma, joining singing competitions in
provinces around the country was a realization of her dreams. She could not have
known then that Bagong Kampeon-and the grand prize-would ultimately become her
ticket to stardom.

At the heels of her triumph, she was asked by OctoArts International to sign
a recording contract. Later on, Ronnie Henares teamed up with her as her
manager. From Chona Velasquez, she assumed the stage name, Regine.

The tandem proved to be effectual. Regine scored hit after hit. Stories
about the new singing sensation from Bulacan went around the music circle. But
it was the story of her being trained by her father in the sea of Henundayan,
Southern Leyte-he submerged her in water to her neck to develop lung power-which
became her trademark in the industry.

RELUCTANT ACTRESS

"Regine has been crowned Box-Office Queen of the Guillermo Mendoza Memoraial
Awards for Entertainment, trouncing the Drama Princess Judy Ann Santos herself.
For all that, surprisingly, Regine is still reluctant to identify herself as an
actress. She still prefers to be recognized for her singing rather than for her
acting ability."

The Untouchable Family, a comedy, was Regine's first shot at the movies.
However, it was with Wanted Perfect Mother: which paired her with Christopher de
Leon, that gave her the biggest break. In this film, she got the nod of the
viewing public by portraying a character a la Julie Andrews in The Sound of
Music. Another musically themed movie, Do Re Mi, pitted her with another singing
talent, Donna Cruz, and with then budding actress Mikee Cojuangco. "I had so
much fun doing the movie. Donna, Mikee and I got along pretty well. In fact even
after the shooting of the film, we still kept in touch with each other. We
became really, really good friends," she relates.

The years in the movies have proved to be good to Regine. Viva Films, her
mother studio, contracted her with bigger movie projects opposite some of the
country's celebrated actors. All of these films have carried a romantic theme
and have become certified hits-Kailangan Ko'y Ikaw with Robin Padilla; Pangako
Ikaw lang with Aga Muhlach; Ikaw Lamang Hanggang Ngayon with local cinema's
Adonis, Richard Gomez.

Though she had her fair share of controversies early in her acting career,
Regine has remarkably managed to shun being romantically linked to her screen
partners. "Maybe because I'm more of a singer than an actress. Viva takes good
care of my reputation as a recording artist. The way they promote my movies is
more on the storyline of the film or the songs in it rather than on the love
angle of the actors," she points out with relief.

She welcomes the idea of working with Christopher de Leon again, perhaps in
her dream project similar to that of Nicole Kidman's Moulin Rouge.

THE MAN OF HER DREAMS

At 32, Regine still has her family, friends and fans all eagerly awaiting
her knight in shining armor. It is a surprise then to know that in fact, Regine
had hoped to get married as early as 24! That it hasn't happened might well be a
blessing in disguise, if not, the admiring public wouldn't have her where she is
now.

Except for that brief period when her romance with a fellow actor was known
to one and all, the public has yet to hear about her love life. Nevertheless,
when asked about her ideal man, Regine gamely pictures him as having the looks
of Richard Gomez, the wits of Ogie Alcasid, the personality of Ricky Martin, and
the sex appeal of Robin Padilla!

Love has, indeed, taken a backseat for Regine for the meantime. But she
confesses that anytime love knocks at her door, she wouldn't resist the call. In
fact, she's even willing to give up the fame she's enjoying right now to give
way to having a normal family life. Though Regine doesn't agree that there is
such a thing as ideal family, she still sees herself as being a good wife to her
partner. "Kasi masunurin ako. Although I would try my best not to lose my
identity, I'm the type of person who's willing to sacrifice everything for my
family."

REACHING FOR THE STARS

Regine believes she is yet to reach the peak of her career. She has qualms
about considering herself successful because she believes that putting that
thought into her head would make her lose her drive in working. She realizes she
still has a long way to go, so many opportunities to take and a couple of
mountains to conquer.

Nonetheless, she is quite happy with what's going on with her career. She
feels blessed and thankful for who and for where she is right now. "Regine
Velasquez owes her fame and glory to Mang Gerry and Aling Teresita (her
parents). They are the ones who motivated and inspired me to work even harder.
Their love became my fountain of wisdom and my source of strength."

Regine's songs are a celebration of her life. If she were to dedicate some of
her hits, whom would she offer the following?

"SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME"
To my parents

"KAILANGAN KO'Y IKAW"
To God

"HANGGANG NGAYON"
To my dear friend Ogie Alcasid

"BABALIK KANG MULI"
I think I would dedicate that to my happy childhood

"BUKAS SANA"
To myself

"TO REACH YOU"
To my dreams

"ON THE WINGS OF LOVE"
The song goes out to my dear fans for staying with me all this time!

AND IF SHE WAS TO LEAVE ONE SONG TO THE INDUSTRY THAT HAS BEEN GOOD TO HER? It
could only be "You Are My Song". Pinasikat ako ng kantang yan.
