Lani Misalucha: The Crossover Queen
Shirley Matias. Pizarro

While everybody seems keen on pitting Lani Misalucha rising star against the more established glitter of Regine Velasquez’s, the “Crossover Queen” admits there shouldn’t really be anything of that sort.

“We all know that Regine is way up there, long, long before I even started so please, I hope they put a stop to all these intrigues now,” Lani said during the press conference of her latest series of concerts under the Crossover banner.

Lani also took the opportunity to clear the air, especially those issues that say Regine was one of the reasons why she doesn’t really come out regularly on GMA 7’s “SOP” anymore. “That’s not true. I have limited appearance on “SOP” simply because the initial agreement we have with “SOP” was for me to come out just twice a month. They would have wanted me to be there every week, but my schedule won’t really permit it. As for the past months, I was hardly visible in the show simply because I came from a month-long tour of the US for a series of shows there. That was just that, nothing else,” she said good-naturedly.

Lani was very candid when she was asked why she hasn’t objected to the fact that it was always Regine who gets the finale credits everytime they do that top-rated “SOP” segment “Back-to-Back-to-Back.” “She’s been there 17 years. She is a star, in fact, the biggest star among all of us and I believe she has all the right to be the finale each time,” she said. Lani added that “I am happy with what I have achieved so far. That is the secret to my happiness, I believe,” Lani said meaningfully.

Lani is branded as the “Crossover Queen” simply because she is about to embark on another Crossover series of shows nationwide next year, her second since September. The schedule is as follows: Jan. 11- Bacolod; Jan. 18-Cebu; Jan. 25-Davao; Feb. 1-Pampanga; and Feb. 8- Araneta Center in Cubao, Quezon City.

Lani said she’s not going to do any Valentine shows anymore after this hectic tour.

These shows, according to Lani, will have an all-new repertoire that consists songs of Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, Kathy Trocolli, Imelda Papin, Claire dela Fuente, Didith Reyes, and Eva Eugenio. There will be songs from Pops Fernandez, Zsa Zsa Padilla, Jaya and Regine Velasquez, too. “The idea is to feature songs from divas both here and abroad,” Lani said.

She promised not to do the “signature tricks” people have already associated with her in her every performance — no more impersonations, no more of those singing-while-lying down, and the likes. Instead, Lani said she’s try to do more upbeat and danceable tunes, too, “something that I haven’t really done yet in my past shows,” she said.

Lani sums up her 2002 as a continuation of all the good things in her career that started in 2001. She counts her successful US concert tour last year and the Onstage series as the highlights of the year coming to a close.

What to expect of her in the new year? Lani said, “more shows and hopefully more of the things that I have given you in the past couple of years.”
