Ok, I'm a junior and I twirl fire all the time. It is really not dagerous at all. I have never gotten hurt in any way. If the baton is moving fast enough it will not burn skin, but it might singe arm hairs. Once while practicing I did accidentally drop it on the football field and it didn't start a grass fire or anything. It went out after about 5 sec though. Make sure you thouroly light ends cuz they go out real easy.
