Yes, ßM1's back! I'm pleased to post our EOM (or EOY) trivia: the Top 10 Filipino scientists of the year, 39 years young and younger.

The Philippine National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) hands out the Outstanding Young Scientist (OYS) Awards annually to foster excellence in science and technology. I know this is stale news as the 2001 awards were presented July 12, but here's the list of recipients regardless:

1. Dr. Lemnuel Aragones, University of the Philippines (UP) Los Baños
2. Dr. Conrado Balatero, UP Los Baños
3. Dr. Edward Barroga, UP Los Baños
4. Dr. Christina Binag, University of Santo Tomas
5. Dr. Dindo Campilan, International Potato Center
6. Dr. Albert Gapud, UP Los Baños
7. Dr. Ma. Antonia Habana, UP Manila
8. Dr. Patricio Palmes, West Visayan State University Hospital
9. Dr. Simeona Siar, UP Los Baños
10. Dr. John Paul Vergara, Ateneo de Manila University

Conspicuously, the majority of this year's OYS honorees are UP alumni, including (shall I tell you this?) my maternal cousin, Manong Edward Fontanilla Barroga. I just find it ironic that he was bestowed this award because he never graduated with honors from UP, while his sisters - who finished cum laude, magna and summa from UP - haven't received similar recognition as professionals (yet). I'll upload his photo as soon as Sis can find one. At this point, I can't tell you much about him nor his scientific activities. The last time I met him an eon ago in Poblacion Luna, Apayao, he devoured the gabi (taro) leaves that Auntie Sally and Sis cooked with coconut milk...

Happy 2002!
