I think there's a lot of reasons why filipinos are ashamed to be who they are. I went to the philippines for the first time this summer and to my surprise people would try to speak english even though their english obviously sucks. I prefer they speak to me in tagalog because i'm blessed to know such a beautiful language and living in america, i'm not blessed to step out of my house and just speak tagalog to a cash register at my local vons....Why not have pride in one's own language? why not look at Tagalog as something that is beautiful. Even here in America people tend to forget tagalog because of the pressure of learning english. Now parents can blame school for their kids not being able to be bilingual, but I consider that BS. I know a lot of chinese and mexican americans that know their own language. Chinese american kids are good examples. I took one semester of mandarin in college and believe me folks, it is hard. Its words have no greek or latin roots in it which means it is very far from the english language. For some strange reason, filipinos just want to forget their language. tagalog is not a hard language, people. It has words in it that are common in the spanish and english language. It uses the alphabet system unlike chinese with its own symbols. Anyway folks, it also amazes me why so many filipinos claim they're spanish or chinese. That really pisses me off. why is it that spanish and chinese is held with such high regards. i never understood that. i'm the kinda person that says i'm filipino when i'm asked. I don't care what people say. I'm filipino.
