Subject: Wedding Etiquette: Gifts

Hello!

I'm looking for suggestions regarding wedding etiquette.

My friend will be getting married in the Philippines. She lives half way around the world. Her estimated guest list is 400. For those kind enough to give gifts how do you tell them that she can't bring all those packages home? She can't afford extra luggage charges or the freight cost. There are also worries that some gifts might not pass customs (security regulations and all so strict these days).

We're at our wits end trying to figure out the best way to inform people that money would be preferable. I'm choking at the fact that anything like this should even be mentioned (verbal or written). Personally it's always been my opinion that a gift should never be expected. This is not about me however.

Would people mind if something were mentioned on the invitation? Is this considered very rude? Maybe people would take exceptions because they live so far a way? Help please!

Suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
