I read sometime last month an article about Ms Castillo in the Chicago Tribune (either Nov 13 or 14).
As a national spokeswoman for the Washington, D.C.-based Center for Victims of Crime, Kristin was visiting schools and teaching pupils about racial diversity and tolerance. I suppose this is part of her job as reigning Miss Illinois. Her platform centers on youth violence and crime prevention, comparable with former Miss America Angela Perez Baraquio's character education for students.
"We should embrace each other regardless of our differences and, in fact, should embrace each other for our differences," she was quoted as saying.
She related stories about the prejudices she had encountered as an Asian American, citing an experience in Georgia when some people mistook her for a Chinese and told her she wasn't allowed there. I also assumed she was a Chinoy's daughter the first time I saw her pictures because she doesn't have the big, round eyes of a typical Filipina.
Fil-Am Pageant History Trivia:
Representing Illinois, Kristin Castillo was the youngest (and probably most intelligent) contestant in the Miss America Pageant held in September 2001.
