First,Literacy,The Spaniards colonized the Phillippines from 1521-1898.then The Americans colonized us from 1898-1945.but upto these present time,Our Universities,Private /Public schools carries the American sytle of education, especially at those Universities established by the Spaniards dating back 300 years ago.and the number one language spoken is usually english.anywhere you look , listen, read,English is the dominant languge spoken by the Filipinos.87% of Filipinos are Literate according to a local survey back in 1997.If you watch on cable television on Phillippine News, you'll notice that even if the hosts talked in Tagalog,Those interviewed on the air reply in English.Next is Culture, which is an interesting part ,a great combination of western, european, asian influence designs the filipinos colorful cultural heritage, which dates way back earlier than 1521 which is the year the country was discovered by Ferdinand Magellan. The Chinese,Mexicans,Indians were the earliest trading partners of the early Filipinos,in this way these people brought with them their cultures, and some of them settled down in the country, which is known then as The Pearl Of The Orient Seas. Not to be ignored are the muslims of neihboring Indonesia,Thailand, and Malaysia, and lastly ,the Americans.Truly this is a country of great mixture and blending of the East and the West.Even in languages and provincial dialects. Some provinces have words similar to Indonesia,Thailand,India,Malaysia,China,Spain.these great mixture of words are now known as TAGALOG.
