To answer your question about basketball, Cal Poly plays a very defined half court offense. This approach was implemented by Cal Poly coach Kevin Bromley who in two years at the helm revamped the Mustang offensive from the run and gun approach used by former head coach Jeff Schneider. As a consequence, Cal Poly finished the 2003 basketball campaign playing Utah State for the conference championship and an automatic NCAA tournament bid. The Mustangs fell in the championship game by 3 points but prior to the Utah State game, they knocked-off UCSB by 15 points.

If you're looking for solid evidence about Cal Poly's academic quality vs. UCSB, the information you're looking for can be found in the attached article. Simply copy and paste the URL provided below into your web browser and you'll be taken to the data.

What's so compelling in the information presented is the fact that 85% of students accepted to both Cal Poly and UCSB elect to attend Cal Poly. The reason? Cal Poly's applied theory laboratory study (aka Learn by Doing) and the fact that PhDs teach the classes. At UCs, Teaching Assistants are the primary players in the classroom with PhDs working on research.. Additionally, Cal Poly is much more selective than UCSB in admissions and its graduates are more heavily recruited by the Fortune 500 then those of UCSB.

In terms of preparing student for graduate school, approximately 30% of undergraduates continue on to grad school upon graduation. This post graduate percentage is in the top 20% of all colleges and universities in the United States. Without question, Poly grads are well prepared.

Regarding computer science, 2 years ago Cal Poly was ranked the #1 undergraduate Computer Science program in the United States. This ranking considered programs at universities where doctoral degress are not granted. Further, at IBM's international computer science competition held in the Netherlands, Cal Poly computer science representatives finished ranked 5th in the world tied with Duke University. In doing so, Cal Poly finished ahead of all other American Universities in the competition including Harvard, Stanford, Cal Tech, Cal Berkeley and Yale. UCSB's team did not qualify following the US competition and was not invited to the international competition.

Final thought, visit www.calpoly.edu. On the opening web page you can scroll down to a link which takes you to the recent US News and World Report rankings. You'll notice Cal Poly engineering is ranked #1 in the United States for schools not offering PhDs.

Oh yeah....don't kid yourself, UCSB is still a party school. You'll never hear that about Poly. Go Mustangs!
