Subject: LB Game Report (kinda long)

Fortunately, Steve McDirty showed up tonight to represent the seniors because the rest of them stunk up the joint on senior night. Poor shooting by Geary, Allen, and Grace led to a 39% shooting night for the Mustangs. Fortunately, LB is not a very good team right now or that game would have been yet another in the loss column. The Mustangs have got to be glad to be done with Mott for the year as they've played less than stellar ball at home in conference.

Here are some positives: Mustangs forced 22 turnovers tonight. played pretty good perimeter defense, controlled the entire game, played against a relatively aggressive press and took care of the ball. Varnie was spot on tonight--splittin' defenders, making smooth moves to the hoop, staying out of serious foul trouble, hit is free throws, didn't do anything to hurt his bid for conference player of the year. Shane Schilling also played pretty well, but he forces the ball between defenders and turned the ball over several times. We all know he's a fine athlete, but he needs to learn to let the game come to him a bit more. It will, he was open on the wing all night. Eric Jackson responded with a big game tonight. I've said it all year, in order for this team to win they've got to be at least a three headed scoring monster. Varnie almost always gets his; Shane does most of the time; and we need a guard or the guards to score 20+. Tonight that burden fell in the lap of EJ. And he nutted up. Early in the game, LB was not respecting his 3pt shot--I'm yelling shoot the ball Eric, (I don't think he heard me) but he did shoot and scored. It happened one other time and he was on his way. He started taking the ball to the hoop, hitting some outside shots, it was a thing of beauty. This kid finally had the confidence to play like he's capable of playing.

As for LB, we were lucky Darden had a poor shooting night. But that dude rained in two of the prettiest high arcing three point jump shots that you'll ever see. I liked what I saw in Kevin Roberts too. For a guy who is only 6'7", he uses his wide shoulders and buttocks very well to clear space for himself inside. As for their two freshmen, Jibril Hodges can handle the ball, but he's rough and will need to smooth his game out over the years. He's a good athlete and will only get better. Alex Graham, their 7 foot frosh played relatively well. As one Niner supporter sitting behind me told me, he doesn't embarass himself on the court. Phil Johnson matched up with him in the first half and beat him to three rebounds on consecutive possessions because of better positioning. Varnie scored relatively easily over him about three times in the second half. But Graham will be a force in conference before he graduates. Lawhorn played a nice game too.

Sloppy game, poor shooting on the part of both teams, but we came out with a win and I'm sure Bromley will take it.
