Subject: Triple-Zero Author: Red Fox 5 [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] Date Posted: 00:31:14 02/17/09 Tue Well they tried but Kaylen, Hall and Goodwin missed the dubious triple-zero combination in last nights SPC game. The feat of 0 points, 0 rebounds and 0 assists is hard to accomplish, especially when you combine for 47 floor minutes but miraculously the trio was able to grab 4 rebounds. They did post a double-zero though with 0 points and 0 assists. Too bad Kaylen was in this group tonight but I'm confident he will bounce back for the final few games. The other two continue to reek it up. Not sure how Goodwin hit for 17 the other night but the guy on the floor at SPC was more in line with the guy we've seen the MAJORITY of this season. I will say for the 999th time I want to see Devezin, Hall and Bauer along with the 2 transfers and at least 3 of the 4 freshman next year with a smidgen of either Williams or Parris in certain situations. RJ Hall over the last 5 games: 17.2 minutes, 1.6 points, 0.8 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 3-22 shooting, 1-12 on three's. Hall with 3 points or less in 7 of the last 8 games. I understand he's a freshman and may be a bit gassed but this is rediculous. He's barely a shell of his former self form earlier in the year. We all thought our young players would improve by year's end because of the valuable experience but all they seem to do is get more and more fatigued? Why does this not happen so dramatically with other teams freshman? Sure Marist has depth problems but for Hall that should not be the issue...he hasn't been asked to play 30-35 minutes a night...he's been pretty consistently around 17-19 minutes per game all year. Do we just constantly have bad luck recruiting guys who run out of gas early in their careers (see Hall, DeJuan Goodwin 2007-2009, Jay Gavin last year, etc.)??

Despite the bad play Hall remains our 3rd leading scorer on the season. When our third leading scorer can't break 3 ppg, that's bad enough but when your 4th and 5th scorers cant surpass a guy who's been averaging less than 3 ppg for an 8 game stretch that's even worse. Alright enough with the negative...something positive...let's see... Kaba, Drummond, Carter, Alexis, Rusin and Prescott... that's better : )

If only they had guys that could finish in transition. Next year they will. I'm confident in Hall. All in all, he's had a nice first year. He'd be better if he had better players around him.. Next year that shouldn't be as big an issue because he won't need to score as much. The addition of larger and more athletic offensive weapons who can also shoot will force other teams not to play such a packed down defense which should give him more paths to the lane. Right now this team has guys who either need to catch the ball in the post to score or guys who only shoot from the perimeter. Kaylen is the only guy who can shoot from the outside and drive inside and score. Devezin is the only other player who can drive from the outside and score but of course he can't shoot. Parris has a flash here or there but he's not consistent with it. With next years sqaud there will be a whole bunch of guys who can start on the perimeter and drive all the way to the hoop. Guys like Kaba, Carter, Alexis and Prescott are bigger, stronger and more athletic than we are accustomed to seeing at Marist. Each one of them (aside from Prescott right now) is a good to very good outside shooter as well. Having that offensive versatility is so important at this level and it's especially important in the dribble drive offense. The problem with this team is no matter how much they move the ball unless it ends up in the hands of Gregory the defense knows that every other player can really only score in one way so unless ball movement free's up an outside shooter or Williams or Bauer establishes without the ball and catches it deep in the post this team just can't score in the half court. Hope the above makes sense... For next years squad there should always be 3, usually 4 and sometimes 5 guys who can score in multiple ways so opposing defenses will have a hard time matching up. We should have enough shooters to pull the defense out to the perimeter and for the first time in recent memory we should actually have more than enough athletes who can drive their way to the hoop and finish with authority. Kaba is the key to next years squad in my opinion. The younger guys I expect will take some time to develop and hone their skills a bit but Daye gives us 6-4, 6-5ish 210 pound athletic shooter and finisher with a scorers mentality. He should be a major matchup problem for every team we play in conference. When you have a player like he takes so much pressure off of everyone else. I can't really think of any other player that we've had that fits that mold. Louie would be the closest but honestly I think Kaba is more athletic based on clips I've seen and what I've read. Kaba is certainly a better shooter. Now let's all just hope he IS as he has been advertised.

The analogy of Kaba and Louis is a helpful one. I thought Louis was the difference maker last year. After he got injured and they hit the skids, it just sealed the deal for me. His size and athletic ability was at times head and shoulders above his opposite number. I would have loved to have him for either of the Siena games. If Kaba can cause those kind of match up issues, as we think Casiem is capable of doing, they will present a major physical challenge in league. Like you, I would love to be able to look at a Marist team a year or so from now and say WOW, where did this speed and power come from. I know this year's team is offensively challenged, but it seems to me that they have suffered the most, and earned the greatest ire from their coach, in three fundamental areas: rebounding, turnovers and foul shooting. More and diverse offensive weapons will help and are a must. But, you can't be consistent if your always: one and done, giving the ball right back or leaving 6-8 points at the foul line every game. I hope these new guys are better schooled in these areas from the get go.

Casiem should be a better rebounder than anyone on this current squad. Rebounding is supposed to be his biggest strength. I do not know the FT shooting numbers of the newcomers. The three worst offenders on this team shouldn't see much time next year in Goodwin, Williams and Parris. Those three are 57-120 in MAAC games this year...that's 48% and that is unacceptable in 8th grade basketball. I would hope the newcomers are much better than that. As for the turnover's I think as more versatile players join the team next year the turnovers will go down. I think we turn it over so much because we have too many one trick ponies like I was writing about above. When defenses play us tight we don't have enough guys who can pick up the dribble and create a shot out of it. When the defense smothers us we usually resort to dangerous passes or out of control dribbling in an effort to get out of the trap. Of course sometimes when you bring in more young athletic guys that breeds more turnovers because they push the issue too much. If that turns out to be the case I'd rather have those kinds of turnovers once in awhile than the panic induced ones we have seen this year. To follow up more on the Kaba-Louis stuff, I agree Louis' injury killed us last year. Who knows how far we could've gone if he was healthy all year long. Kaba should be able to put up big points at this level for next year's team. Aside from his athleticism and shooting ability, his scouting report says he plays a physical game and is a good defender. Out of school (according to scout and rivals) he was offered by Boston College, USC, Pittsburgh and Richmond and he drew interest from St. John's, Villanova, Rutgers, Providence, Purdue, Old Dominion, Arizona State and Baylor.
