There are two risks to fouling intentionally in that situation: 1. They make the first FT, intentionally miss the 2nd and grab the rebound for a tip/shot to tie the game (or win it with a pass outside for a three). This has happened in college games. 2. The defender makes it obvious he's about to give an intentional foul and the player with the ball starts to shoot just as he's being hit - giving him three FT's. This has also happened in college games.

Author: Andy [ Edit | View ] Date Posted: 10:32:42 01/26/09 Mon Ok all true however - With taking a 3 pointer only 1 variable is in place make it or miss it With a foul: 1) he needs to MAKE the 1st then miss the second while making sure he HITS the rim (he misses the rim then its over) then his team has to GET the rebound 2) if the determine he is in act of shooting the three from behind midcourt (well so be it) he now still needs to make three FTs in a row under some serious pressure. To me I will take my chances on the later then just putting some token D up and hoping he misses the 3 - cuz you arent going to put real D on because you dont want to foul.
