Subject: 2008 - 2009 MBB Roster

Gino Romanelli's name missing from this year's roster. Does anyone know if he's left the program? Would this mean additional scholarship at Coach Martin's disposal?

I believe Romanelli was a walk-on, meaning he wouldn't effect scholarships. I am not 100% positive on this though.

Geno left the team last week, he had too much work and other things going on so he quit the team

Thanks yankee & foxred for the update on Geno. If he was a walk-on, I'm assuming Martin has two remaining scholarships to work with. Do either of you, or anyone else know, if we've been recruiting anyone heavily ( ie official visits ) for the early signing period, or are we saving for late signing period. Seems Chuck was very successful going the late signing period route last year.

Sorry alum, haven't heard anything about visits etc. Marist has always been type lipped about it, or we just don't have any insiders on this board:). One or the other. Marist needs to find a physical presence though, even if he doesn't have much of an offensive game. Just someone to bang, rebound and defend.

Yea, this weekend I saw they had a recruit up visting. He was about 6-6 or 6-7 and pretty skinny and was there the whole weekend. Friday night I saw RJ Hall showing him around McCann, then Saturday I saw the recruit with Hall and Kaba at the football game, then finally sunday in the cafeteria the recruit was down there with his family and Coach Martin and Coach Weeks. I couldnt recognize him but if anyone else has info that would be good.

during the early period. They could use a space eater type too. Other than Teague, no other players like that linked to Marist by the popular recruiting site. Got to think the staff will hold out for that type player even if it means taking a chance in the late signing period rather than using both open slots now. Two late signees that come to mind are James Smith and Kenny Hasbrouck. Both turned out pretty well, especially Kenny, so far.

A 6-5 kid named Brandon James from Poughkeepsie is listed on Scout for both Marist and Siena along with some DII schools. Kind of strange but you never know. JJ's didn't have too many D1 offers either.

Thanks again foxred for the recruiting update. Like oldfox, I'm glad to see we're bringing in players during early signing period. endless motor as he is extremel

I don't know who the recruit is mentioned by redfox, but I'll throw out the name Trevon Hamlett. He's listed at 6'7" 185 lbs. CAA Insider doesn't show that Marist has made an offer, but the list of schools showing interest is considerable ( Drexel, Siena, Fordham, Georgia among most noteables). No offers indicated by any schools yet, though.

Yankee, this kid appears to be a good offensive rebounder, runs the floor well, and has a motor that doesn't quit. Could be the type of find you were anticipating.

I just hate seeing an SEC school involved. Once those bigger schools are mentioned, it obviously gets extremely hard to get a committment.

It all comes down to this: The MAAC coach tells the kids they're taking a chance at a big school (sec, conf. USA) where they could be a roll player or worse. Where in the MAAC they are guaranteed to be a featured player. Right now its the only sell we have. As far as bringing kids in early...I'm sure it happens all the time. But how do you get them to commit early when their inner circle is chirping at them to wait for the big schools to come a callin. Keep looking for the Tomidy's and Stilphin's and build around them.

Try to think positive yankee. Maybe this kid would rather be a starter at a mid-major instead of a 10-12 at a school like Georgia.

I still have to think it is the rare case that a kid would choose a MAAC school over an SEC school. The ultimate goal for a college player should be to get to the NCAA tourney and win some games there. No school recruits a guy to be a 10-12 guy, unless its a big loafing center. They recruit the best players they can get and let the pieces fall as they may. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, we ain't getting a kid that is being mentioned with Georgia. However, the recruiting sites are wrong quite often possibly. Just my opinion. The rare exceptions could be family reasons where a kid decides he needs to be near home or academic reasons if a lower level school has an academic program the kid just HAS to have.

Just because a larger school is listed if there is no scholarship offer - it could only be the player that is interested. Many of those lists of interested schools come from the player
