- Our summer -- Marvin & Betty Baas, Mon, Sep 14 2009, 19:47:12
We still work MMAP (Mobile Missionary Assistance Program) projects. In July we worked in Idaho and in July in Oregon.
Following is a letter that Betty sent to various friends and relatives in July.
Greetings from Round Lake Christian Camp.
We are both well and are way up in the mountains and quite isolated. This camp is about 20 miles from Sisters, OR which is about 20 miles from Bend, OR which is near the center of the state.
In 2003 a forest fire swept thru this place and burnt down all the camp buildings except one. So us MMAPers here are working on building new buildings and getting the camp back into full operation.
The fire’s results are still very obvious in this whole region. It burnt 90,692 acres so we can still see black burnt tree trunks for many miles when we drive this area.
When we first arrived here we only had a water hook-up for our motorhome so, not having electricity, we had to run the generator some times and “dry camp” for a few days. Marv and another MMAPer got the electricity connected and another group of volunteers from a local church came this last weekend and worked with them to make the sewer connections to the motor homes.
We have no cell phone or internet service here and that adds to the sense of isolation but we like it. It is very quiet and peaceful. We are parked facing Round Lake which is about 200 feet away and gives us a very nice view – except for a few burnt trees here and there.
Every evening deer come out and parade within 100 feet of our motorhome. The camp host and hostess put out fruit peelings and a block of salt which the deer like to lick. They finish the salt in a few days but then they keep coming back and looking for more. There are quite a few toads here and something – which we have not yet seen – which they call whistle pigs or ground chucks. We looked up those names on the Internet and found out that those names refer to woodchucks.
On our way to this camp from Idaho we spent three days in Bend, OR. We visited my niece, her husband, and two children while we were there. The niece is the daughter of my brother Joe who died in 1968.
This area reminds me of the New Mexico ranch I grew up on. Not the mountains and trees but the isolation and quietness and the afternoon winds. Also here we look at every car coming into the camp – which is rare – and guess who might be coming our way. One feature this camp doesn’t have that the ranch had was the baa baa baaing of the sheep.
Marv and Betty

Yesterday Marvin and Betty came over to visit us. About noon we went out for lunch. Helen went with us.
It sure was nice to see them again and hear about their work. They sure do a lot of volunteer work at so many different places in the country.

- What have you been doing this summer ? -- Grant, Sat, Aug 15 2009, 14:46:19
Summer is just about over and it would be nice if all of you would tell all of us about how you are and what you have done and your plans for the rest of the year.
We never get more than about 10 miles from home these days. We get together with friends about 2 times a week to visit and play some cards. One evening we play bridge that we both like.
I still bowl 2 days a week and I often go to the library to do some reading and some times bring something home to read.
Most mornings at 9 A M I go over to one of the club houses where they serve coffee and spend an hour talking to other coffee drinkers.

I must have had a good time at the reunion. I gained 4 lbs.
I am wondering if any of you did as well.
So it took me only 5 days to put it on, but it took me
6 days to get rid of it.
Now I am looking forward to next year to do it all over

- We had a great 27 th reunion. -- Grant, Thu, Jun 11 2009, 20:59:03
I got home about noon today from G.R. David picked me up at the airport as usual. That is wonderful.
We had a great reunion again and more people than we have had for several years. The weather was cool and we had some rain. So now we can start making plans for next year again and as usual it starts the second Monday of June.
Betty, Lefty's wife, is in the hospital, so she could not be with us. This the first time she missed. Sure hope that her reports are good and her problem can be taken care of. Say a prayer for her.

- THE WAVE -- Nancy, Fri, Jun 05 2009, 9:40:39
This is from a letter from MikeO: (This program is not available yet.)
Google's done it again! This product (The Wave) is a combination of email, instant
messaging, Wiki-type being able to edit what anyone else wrote with full
traceability of who changed what, etc. It works for any number of folks
joined in an online discussion, with everybody's keystrokes showing up in
real-time -- unlike instant messaging where one person waits while the other
person types their response and then presses "send" to send it. And on and
on. New members can join the group and playback what went on before they
joined to see how the discussion developed, etc. It handles text, photos,
graphics etc. equally well. When the product finally comes out it should
make doing things on the Web much more efficient. And obsolete lots of
things like blogs, Yahoo groups, newsgroups, and so on.

We're excited about this reunion as we haven't seen any of our kids for one year. They used to drop in on us when we were in Arizona, but that's all past. My cool Uncle Grant -- Bonnie, Sun, Mar 01 2009, 1:33:37
Uncle Grant, you are too cool. Facebook. We havn't done this yet but you have inspired me.
We won't do it for a bit though because we are in Thailand right now. We are taking a month and traveling also to Laos, Cambodia and Viet Nam. So far this has been a fantastic trip. Only problem is there are not many tourists. We are in a beautiful huge hotel with only one other family. The plight of the world economy is very much felt.
On a very positive note 2 days ago we visited an elephant camp for the day where we adopted our own elephant. We fed our elephant and bathed him. We had to beat him with branches to get all the dust off and wash him down. While we were doing this there was a little seven month baby elephant running around like a puppy or small child. He didn't know how much he weighed. He was always in the way but just the cuetest thing. Then we tood a 90 minute bare back elephant ride to a waterfall where we literally went swimming with them. This was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I wish everyone could do this. Now I love elephants. They were very gentle and sweet.
That is all for me. Again, Uncle Grant--you are too cool.

Maybe I can save you a couple of bucks.
Got a bug in my computer. Started checking for debuggers. Here's 3 I am using that are doing a good job of keeping my computer virus free for free.
Antivir
AVG anti-virus
MBAM
All of these are free. Just go to their site and download the software. Many times these work better then the store bought virus protection. Virus writers look for ways to get around the most popular programs.
I have been running Antivir for years and have not had any problems.
Second:
We had a change in out medical insurance provider. Because of this some pharmacy bills increased.
We started checking RX's online.
This seems to be a good place to compare the price of drugs:
http://www.pharmacychecker.com/
We found prices from $10 to over $100 for the same drugs.
I've researched this place to the point that I think they are a valid online pharmacy:
http://www.healthwarehouse.com/?gclid=CPq_n4DY0pgCFSMSagodBQQ01g
As with car insurance I think you can save a bunch by shopping online.

Judging from all the on board excitment it looks as if we will have to give prizes or something to get people interested. Come on folks, we are so fortunate to have such a large family. As Donna said in an earlier message we connected in Florida and had a great time getting acquainted. I have some pictures of us when we were in grade school and we had seen each other when we were both about 18. A lot of time and life has passed since then.
We would like to throw out the idea of a reunion sometime in the future. I was thinking spring of 2009. We felt a 3,4 or week cruise would be the easiest for everyone. We could probably get a group price if there were enough of us. I think that it would be wonderful to all meet again and become reacquainted.
We need to know several things from each.
1. Would you be interested?
2. How long a cruise would you prefer?
3. California or Florida?
4. Are there any other venues that interest you.
Feel free to email me back directly or discuss on the board. I will be out of the country from December 2nd until the 17th but we do have plenty of time, don't we?

This recent trip took them along the ocean, through Long Beach and Seal Beach, with a stop for getting out and exploring. This was like deja vu for Grant, who has ridden the double deckers in London.

- Fall activities -- Marvin and Betty Baas, Mon, Oct 13 2008, 19:14:19
We spent the summer at home but are now on the road again.
This letter is coming to you from our motorhome parked at a camp in Scottsville, TX. We have come here for one of our volunteer projects with the MMAP organization (MMAP = Mobile Missionary Assistance Program). Those projects have kept us quite busy for the last six and one half years - we are on our 29th project. We are here with six other MMAP couples and are currently tearing down two duplex cabins to make way for building a quad cabin.
From here we go to Hilton Head, SC for the Baas brothers and sisters reunion. Then we plan to work a project at Talladega, AL and then do one at French Camp, MS. So we won't be home until next year some time. It is a good thing we have neighbors on all four sides of our home in CA that look after our place.

- Good report by Tom and Kim -- Grant, Sat, Oct 11 2008, 17:35:02
I am sure all liked Toms report om his summer trip. I sure did.
It would be so very interesting if all that read this
message board would write about your summer activities. Everyone I am sure has something to tell unless
you just stayed home all year and watched TV and if you did that you must have seen something you can tell us about. Bonnie tell us about your trip or trips. Connie about the storms you had this year. Joyce about your new home and how you and Chuck are doing. Also the rest of you
let's hear from you, and let's make this board interesting again. Thank you.

Summer Road Trip -- Tom & Kim Vogel, Sun, Sep 21 2008, 10:54:05
Kim and I took a road trip this summer from San Diego - home to Michigan - and back. It was quite a journey! We put in about 5,500 miles just driving to and from....
On our trip(in addition to going to Yellowstone and Mt. Rushmore)we made an overnight stop in Corsica, SD. I had never been there but had (of course) heard many stories over the years about Corsica and "life on the farm" from my Dad (Harry)and Uncles.
We arrived in downtown Corsica on a Sunday afternoon to discover that one could fire a canon down main street and not hit anyone as there was not one store open or one car parked on the street.
We went out to the farm and spent time talking with the current residents: Jim & Carol DeBoer. They were very sweet and gracious people and gave us a nice tour of the property. I was rather surprised to learn that the DeBoer's are only the "2nd" residents to own the farm since Grand-Pa John Vogel (& Family) gave it up some 70 years ago.
It couldn't have been a more beautiful summer day to be in that part of the country - although I'm sure it looks(and feels)a little different in January.
We also went to the old farmhouse(now in town)and got a tour of it as well. The next morning we met up with Junior and Lucille Noteboom (a cousin of my Dad's). They were very sweet and friendly and we saw them for breakfast and briefly went to their home before getting on the road.
We shot video and took many photos. Most of the photos are very similar to the ones posted on Uncle Grant's website. I'm not sure if it is possible to post pix on this website?
Anyhow, it was good to finally get a chance to see the big metropolis of Corsica...

- A couple of other interesting notes from our visit... The people who live on the farm and the people who live in the old farmhouse in town are related. Also, Jim DeBoer (the farm's current owner) told me that when they first moved in 30 years ago, you could still make out a faded sign painted on the upper part of the big white barn that read "Silverdale Stock Farm" - the name that Grand-Pa John Vogel had given the farm many years earlier. And by the way - if anyone has any clue as to why John Vogel called it "Silverdale" - please let me know?!? (NT) -- Tom Vogel, Thu, Sep 25 2008, 13:51:43
- Thanks, Tom. Those were great to see. I will be visiting this area on my way to my granddaughters high school graduation next spring. It is wonderful to get an advance view. Tom, I will call you this weekend about this. (NT) -- Bonnie, Fri, Oct 03 2008, 6:01:38

- Grant suggested I put this on... -- Nancy, Sat, Aug 16 2008, 19:45:56
...it's a copy of something I put on our local Leisure World message board. (Which usually has several messages a DAY.)
It started with Grant and David repairing the damage the earthquake had done to us. (The 3 by 6 foot mirror had fallen down and splintered glass all over the place, and been removed to the trash.) So the wall decor had to be changed. They moved over a picture that had been at one end of the wall, and put it in the middle. Stangely enough, the wall looks better without the mirror. They had a terrible time getting the picture level, though, because they assumed the eyes to hang it were level--but they weren't. So they compensated for that by some mathematical magic Grant knows, and finally got it hanging straight.
Then it was time to go to the Art League's Hoedown. They had art displays, art instruction, all foms of art stuff for sale, and square dancing. And the most interesting facet of the whole affair was Joe, running around and getting videos of this and that. So much going on that he was nearly overwhelmed. And we'll probably see some of that on our local TV station soon.

- EARTHQUAKE -- Grant, Wed, Jul 30 2008, 10:35:37
Yes, we had an earthquake and it was a good shaker. I have lived here over 70 years and this was the strongest I have ever felt.
I was not home at the time. I was in a store in the checkout line. The person ahead of me was having his stuff
checked and when the quake hit he ran outside. He did not come back for quite a while and the checker did not know what to do with his stuff; about half had been checked out.
As she started putting his stuff away he came back and finished his stuff and took off.
Then I checked out and I went bowling. Only damage we had was a broken mirror.

Lee Baas forgot to put his reply in the subject line. you can read his reply by clicking on the word REPLY next to his name and his reply will come up.

I got home Thursday after a great reunion. I hope every one enjoyed it as much as I did. I only gained 3 lbs so you know I had a great time. It was so wonderful to see and visit
with so many that we see only once a year and some that I seldom see.
To bad that some could not make it hope they can make it next year and that we don't lose any .
Plan for the second monday and Tuesday of June next year .
Lets hear from others about the reunion.

I could probably find the date if I actually read through the family board more often and in more detail, but thought I'd ask and see if the date is set, yet.
Meanwhile, I'll be in Grand Rapids on June 5-6 for a meeting. If anyone is around, I'd love to take you to a late lunch on Friday.

- Just a quick note. Chuck had back surgery yesterday, lumbar stenosis. A long surgery, but everything went well. He was having such pain in his leg, it made walking difficult. He went for a short walk late this afternoon and no pain in his leg. He should be home by Monday. We also sold our Az place this week. A busy week around here. -- Joyce, Fri, Mar 28 2008, 18:09:42
