FIRST VOGEL REUNION--June, 1982

Who were they?
That maniac who brought his boat roaring full throttle in to the dock…
The man who yanked the refrigerator out of a rented trailer…
The lady who kept the entire camp awake most of the night…
The uncle who fed ashes and pebbles to baby birds…
The young woman who leaped into the lake when she had to go to the bathroom…
And the baffled psychologist who observed all of this and shook his head sadly…

They were Vogels..

And why not? It was the Vogel family reunion.

The idea for the reunion had been born long ago: It had simmered slowly, been warmed in the round-robin letters that circulated among the brothers and sisters. Tentative suggestions had become firmer suggestions; the idea grew steadily past the dream stage, and finally became realty.

The reunion took place June 9, 10, and 11, 1982, at Brouwer Park, near Grand Rapids, Michigan. The 200- acre park, four miles west of Stanwood on the Muskegon River, has many sandy beaches, 8000 feet of river frontage, 230 modern campsites with water and electrical hookups, a boat ramp and many other recreational facilities. Trailers had been rented for those who didn’t bring their own Rvs. It was a delightful setting for a delightful occasion, and everything came off smoothly-- thanks to the hard work and planning of Left and Betty, Harry and Betty, and Trudy and Fletch. The Grand Rapids Vogels had made all arrangements, attended to all details, had even arranged for interesting weather--a bit of rain, cool invigorating breezes, and one absolutely perfect day of sunshine.

As the 25th consecutive Vogel reunion nears, Grant thought some of you might be interested in reading the reunion story I wrote about the first one, 25 years ago. It is very long, (and will require a lot of typing, but I need touch-typing practice anyway) so I will put it on the family board in installments.

Mom had another surgery on Thursday. There was a small area that had not healed so they did a bone graft to make it stronger. Before that, she was doing wonderfully - getting up and down and walking with her walker. In a couple of weeks expect her to be back up and at em! i think she will go home Tue or Wed. will let you know. With this surgery the doc expects the leg to hold 100% weight and be much safer.

- Mom's still in a rehab - this one is nicer and real close to her house. She won't be able to put any weight on her leg until after her dr visit on the 10th. Grant is 92 today and I can't see ANY CHANGE in him except that he has lost a tooth or two.
Can't see any change in Helen either except that she's in a wheelchair. And that's only temporary.

We made another trip to the doctor Monday. He is still very happy with the progress on Mom's leg! All the pieces are healing and staying in place. She is getting around with a walker quite well. This is a small surgery planned for March 15 to do a little bone grafting(?) for one small area. Should be minor - but make the leg stronger. We always leave the Drs with good news!!

Also Grant and Helen both have birthdays Friday, 3/2. 92 & 85 !!! How about that??? We are having a casual dinner at the clubhouse on Saturday evening if any of you are wandering around California.

Today is Nancy's birthday. The kids came over and brought her gifts and a nice cake.
The weather was quite warm today, it was over 80 we even had the air conditioner on for a while. This morning it was quite cool and we had the heat on.

Wonderful news about Aunt Helen. So very happy to hear this good news. We are just heading back to N.C. after about three weeks in Florida. We had a great time. Only spent one night in a motel. We stayed with many friends who have stayed with us at home. It's a great system when you are retired. We visited with Aunt Betty and Uncle Harry for a bit. They both look wonderful. They are in the park right next to Connie. They and some friends were going to be helping her with a garage sale last Saturday. I don't know how that went. Connie is doing better. She has a lot of strength to gain back but appears to be doing all the right things. She is eating well and not smoking. Love to all.

She came home today, Feb. 1, after five months in rehab. She's looking good. I stopped over there a while ago, and Judy, Laura and the caregiver were there too, all at the table eating Kentucky Fried Chicken. It seems they have found a very nice full-time caregiver, so things are looking up.

We took turns riding on the camel cart.

We had over 900 people at our medical clinic.

At the school they entertained us with singing and dancing.

Then we entertained them by making all the kids take a deworming pill.

We gave goats to deserving villagers.

We rode horses

And elephants.

  - I'm HOME!! I had my hot bath and went to bed around 7. Woke up around 7 and went outside to pick the first orange from my first crop of 28 oranges on my baby tree. It was FROZEN!!! I wanted to pass on what I consider to be a complement to my uncles who are both living and dead. My daughter, who really has spent very little time with my uncles, asked me if I had been watching all the President Ford coverage. I told her that I had. Amy said that watching the coverage reminded her of my uncles and the kind of men that they were. I thought that it was a nice tribute to President Ford.

- We got a short note from the London airport yesterday. All's well, she said. By now she must be in India, with the adventure well under way. She didn't take her laptop, and I/m sure internet cafes are not very frequent where she will be,. So we may not hear anything for some time, if at all.   - A short (one-minute) phone call from Donna informed us that they haven't been able to find an internet connection since they left Heathrow airport in London, so she finally decided to call instead. She was short on time, as they were about to get on a bus. It seems the bus she was about to get on is taking them to Roopangarh Fort, which is where they'll meet their horses. When they leave there they'll be on horseback.       Built in1648 AD, the town and fort of Roopangarh was constructed by Maharaja Roop Singh of Kishangarh for defence purpose. Over the years, the many additions, which have been made to the original nine turreted fort, can still be seen in the structure. The Roopangarh Fort weaves a magical spell as one tours its medieval stone granaries, royal armories, jails and formidable battlements. Well, it's one of those good news, bad news days for me.

Bad news: My laptop computer wouldn't start up properly this morning.

Good news: I have a backup computer, just in case.

Bad news: My backup computer keeps crashing.

Good news: I managed to get them both working, finally.

Bad news: Now I don't trust either one of them.

Good news: I'm leaving for my big vacation in 4 days.

Bad news: Heathrow has been fogged in for days, and the fog is supposed to last several more days. And we'll be changing planes there.

Good news: They are letting the long flights in and out, on instruments, Stopping all the short flights to leave safe space for the long ones.

Bad news: Heathrow is full up with stranded passengers, so badly that people are waiting out in the snow.

Good news: We have to be there about 6 hours, but most likely they won't make us wait outside. I hope.

Bad news: Who knows. Maybe they will make us wait outside.

Good news: It is supposed to be an adventure, so whatever happens will make it even more of a vacation.

The new cable TV network "Retired Living" is doing a story on our India trip. This morning my friend and I were to meet their crew at 9 at the barn and they would watch us saddle our horses and watch us ride and interview us.

They promised they'd only take "a few minutes of our time."

We got there at 9, saddled up, rode out, looked up the street we expected them to come down, rode around in circles, and eventually a car came. We thought it was the producer and the camera guy we were expecting.

It was the sound lady and the camera guy. We had to wait another 20 minutes for the producer to show up, and more while they unloaded many bags of equipment, wired us with microphones, and off we went.

They wached us ride, made us go back and do it again, then they trudged up the hill to the nice lookout point where we'd ride the long way around and they could watch us coming from a distance.

When we got to the lookout point we sat on our horses and admired the view of the ocean while they took more pictures And they asked us a bunch of questions. Then back to the road where they wanted to get "clop clop" pictures. Watching the horses' feet and listening to the sound effects.

They gave me an extra battery and memory card for my video camera so I can get pictures on the trip. When we get back they'll interview us again, and then we'll get to be on TV. If you're nice to me I'll tell you where to see us.

Today I visited Helen again it was about noon and she was in the dining room and waiting for lunch there were two other ladies at the same table with her. It has been close to four month since she broke her leg. The Dr.Says that he is pleased with the healing. She will have to stay where she is for 30 more days. She is able to put some weight on her leg but not all of her weight yet.
I think Judy and Sharon could perhaps tell you more about her condition and hope they will reply.

I just returned from a week in Mexico and also a week at the Miami Book Fair. The fair was great as usual. Saw a lot of great authors and perhaps our next president! However, this all pales when compared to Donna's winter adventures. Donna, that is some trip you have planned. I hope that we can follow it. This is something that you are doing for a charity. Is that right?

It is cold here again. We will be going back to Miami for the Super Bowl (a party not the actual game) Anyway, the warmth sounds pretty good now.

Uncle Grant, all of our male friends have hearing aids and they are not 91. You are doing very well.

I've got my visa, Bought new riding boots and other equipment that I'm breaking in so I'll be all ready the day after Christmas. I still have a few things to get, like ways to recharge batteries using funny electricity.

A new cable TV network http://www.rl.tv/ has asked me to tape the ride for use on their show. I've agreed to do it but since they don't choose to pay me I'm not gonna let it interfere with experiencing the trip. If I happen to get some good footage (and I expect to) they can have it. Otherwise, too bad.

They are sending a camera crew to tape me and my riding buddy in a couple of weeks, for an intro to the piece. They think it's a good visual bit, the two of us riding in the hills by the ocean, with our four dogs running along with us.

Helen just phoned and today she was able for the first time to take about 7 steps. After 3 months in bed or wheel chair, after breaking her leg on august 24 th, what a relief this must be. She may stay in the same place for a while or she may go somewhere else for rehab, she says.

She's looking good, absolutely normal. Except for that leg propped up and sticking out.
She's reading a book by Louis Lamour. Says she goes around in her wheelchair. Says her bone was broken into a hundred pieces! No wonder she can't come home yet or put any weight on it.
Maybe in a few weeks she'll be home though. She'll have to wait and see what the MD says.

Monday I had an appointment to see my doctor. He checked me over and the lab reports. He said everything checked out good and for me to go home and not worry about my health and live it up.
I came home and told Nancy I don't have a very good doctor because he can't find anything wrong with me.

Helen is in a rehab place now and looks quite good, considering everything. Today she was sitting in a chair eating lunch, and her bed had been freshly made up. She had a few errands for us to do, and we have done them (all but one; she wanted the phone number of Lois Friel and we couldn't find it. Anyone?) Her mind is perfectly clear. She says her bone was shattered in many places and she won't be able to put any weight on that leg for a long time. We are headed for a three week trip on Monday to Croatia and Slovenia. This is the fifth European trip we have taken with some friends. We will tour by car for about 12 days and then take a pretty bare bones little cruise along the Croatian Coast for a week. It sure is easy preparing for a trip when I don't have to fit work in. Only problem is the new air regulations. We usually carry on everything in a little bag but that has changed now.
Fall is coming to NC. It has been a nice break from 80 degree days.

- Went to the Dr yesterday, xrays, took out staples etc. He was very impressed with how she looked and her incision. He said it was an extremely bad break and would take a long recover but she will walk. Next appt is in 3 wks and we are not yet talking about therapy for that leg. Between my driveway and my neighbor's front lawn
there's a strip of land that belongs to me, about 18
inches wide, with 4 very mature italian cypress trees
and a bushy thing.

I've never watered them because the neighbor's lawn
watering and the winter rain seemed to be enough for
them. But this year he hasn't been watering his lawn.
At all.

It dawned on me t'other day that those plants could
probably use a drink. So I put the hose end under one
of them and turned it on low. Figured I'd let it soak
a while, then move it on to the mext. But it didn't
soak in at all, just ran off to the driveway. So I dug
a hole for it to fill and soak from. Nope. Filled the
hole and ran off to the driveway again.

So I got out my spoon and like a little kid playing in
the mud I had a wonderful time making a river flow
from plant to plant, with little lakes alongside each
plant. Even with all those places for the water to
soak in, there's almost as much water entering the
last lake as goes into the first. I have to slow the
water way down to keep it from overflowing. And then
of course I have to increase it a bit so the last lake
gets some.

I'll probably spend most of the day resetting the
speed of the water. And dredging out the river where
it decides for itself where it wants to go.

And the trees won't even appreciate it.

Oh well.

Every once in a while we (Grant's family) write each other emails telling what all happened on some particular day. Mike writes every day, but the rest of us are too lazy to do that. Anyway recently I wrote one and Grant said I should put it on the family board, so here it is:

Well, first thing this morning I went to the lab and had some blood taken. This had been done about a year ago, so I don't know why MD wanted it done again so soon. Especially after my excellent after-egg cholesterol was so good last time, and everything else perfectly ok.

Last night David brought some jujubes and some other kind of organic object...like an Asian ear of corn. We cooked and tasted it today, and sure enough as advertised it leaves a quinine-like aftertaste. Supposedly it's good for malaria, but we aren't troubled by that right now. The jujubes are somewhat like tiny apples. Not too bad. Not much good though. (But thanks, David, for the experience. very intresting and educational.)

Then this afternoon I went to the first of the art appreciation class, (the reason DLV has changed her visits from Tues to Wed. Quite interesting,and I'm sure I will enjoy it. Altho I got there quite early in order to be sure to get in, since I hadn't followed the proper route of phoning and doing it all corretly. Sure enough I got in, and so did many other people who hadn't signed up properly.

Then soon after I got home GCV returned from bowling and a visit to dentist, where he finally got his teeth! Now he can smile without looking like a Halloween pumpkin.
G stopped at a Radio Shack to see if they had any sort of gizmo that could be added to my white-noise "sleep even tho your hubby makes funny noises" machine. So that I can set it to shut off after half an hour. RS didn't have anything like that but said Best Buy might. So maybe he'll check that out tomorrow.
And I guess that's about all. Tomorrow, Donna's visit, and who knows what might happen.

Wednesday Mom was moved from the hospital to Alamitos West Convalescent Hospital. We do not know how long she will be there. They say it will be a couple of weeks before she can begin putting any weight on her leg at all. it appears to be healing ok but they expect therapy to be long. Don't know the details but seems that some time last evening Helen tripped and fell and broke her leg.and she
could not call anyone and the paper boy this morning some way found out about her and called 911. She is now in the hospital and will have surgery tonite I have been told.
This is whatI have heard Perhaps Sharon or Judy will give us the correct information as to what happened.

The past few years my cholesterol has been going up. Jan. 6 of this year my total cholesterol was up to 224 and my good chol.(HDL) was low, 34, and triglycerides were high, 267.
What to do? I had to do something. I could take some pills but pills also can have bad side effects. So I decided to give oatmeal a real test.
So I ate regular oatmeal twice a day. I like oat meal; I cook it with raisins.
After 6 months, last month I had my cholesterol checked again. What a good report!
Total chloresterol was down from 224 to 165, and my good (HDL) was up from 34 to 39. My triglycerides were down from 267 to 150. I am still eating oatmeal. Grant

We had a nice Randall family reunion in S.C. last week. We stayed in a large beach house on Isle of Palms. Bonnie planned it and it was great. I had the most wonderful dream recently, and feel I should share it with y'all.
I dreamed that I had created a painting so big and heavy that I couldn't even carry it, and that Grant carried it for me to a big place where there were lots of other pictures, and many people milling around.
There seemed to be some kind of contest, and the pictures were lined up in various categories. We put mine in one of the categories and then Grant semed to drift away and he was gone.
Later I was sitting in a chair and they were making announcements. Third place, so and so. Second place, so and so. First place, and blue ribbon--ME!!!!!
What a JOYOUS dream. But this morning when I got up, I saw an amazing thing--there was a real blue ribbon on my painting!!!!!
It wasn't a dream! Yippee and Hallelujah,

I had a good day today. Two of my good friends had surgery today for cancer. Both came out great with everything looking as if it was contained. I am feeling very grateful.
As a side, though, I think that I have to get a special calender for operations and other medical procedures. This is certainly one of the results of aging.

My niece Janine just called me to tell me that Virginia passed away yesterday. She has been ill for some time, cancer and heart problems. Janine had just moved back from South Korea , where she has lived for some time and was moving back to the farm in Virginia, hoping her mother could live there with her. Virginia was 86. She has been cremated, a memorial service will be held on Saturday,in Berea, with burial on Sunday at the cemetery on the farm in Virginia -- Joyce, Wed, Jul 19 2006, 12:55:56

It's not so bad here, Joyce. About 80.We aren't far from the ocean, so we are cooler than inland. I have a big sun hat which I wear when I go outside.
On my sort-of daily jaunts to the library, for motivation I read part of a book, then put it back on the shelf and continue it the following day. (Someone will take it out, and it won't be available to me, you say? Not to worry. If you read classics, they will still be there the next day.)
The classic I am reading right now is Heart of Darkness, by Conrad. Have any of you read it? A different style of writing than we see today, but very good and interesting.

We made it home last eveing after a couple of days of long drives. It was wonderful seeing so much family again. I don't think I have seen Lee Bass since I was a kid. Thank you Lefty and Harry for all the wonderful hospitality. Uncle Lefty said several times that it is almost time for the younger folk(yes, that is us) to take over. I think that it is a good idea. Anyone have any suggestions or ideas.
We visited Dearfield Village and the Henry Ford Museum after leaving GR. We loved it. Bill had never been. The place was deserted. We also ate great middle eastern food in Dearborn. They have a very high percentage of people from the middle east.
Pearl, thanks for your diligence with getting us all contact information.
All cousins, be warned I have commited to never again pass by a city housing a first cousin without calling and getting together for some type of refreshment.

It's been a while since I've treated you to one of my dog pictures.

Early this week it rained, and the next day I took my dogs with me when I rode the horse. When we got back to the barn my dog Starlight found herself a nice mud puddle to lie in and cool off.

Here's the picture I took of her before her bath. She didn't think she had a bath. She thought she'd played with the water while I watered the yard. Whatever you call it, I managed to get her nice and clean.

It's cold, windy and rainy in WI so I'll not go shopping - I'm way overdue on the "Board". I'm slowly recovering from my bid birthday almost a month ago, and very busy with meetings here at Oakwood-I'm on way too many committees. Tomorrow we are leaving for Las Vegas. We were going to drive out west and then on to GR for reunion but I won a trip to LV. It is only for 2 nights but we will be going to the country music awards plus other activities. Since I have never been there we decided to expand that trip. We will be spending extra time there and also rent a car and visit Zion and Bryce.
We had a great DC vacation with our grandson. 11 year old boys are great. He particularly loved the museum of Natural History. We visited there two days.
For the reunion, I need to know if most of the time is spent in the NE. I need to know where to settle.
Hope all is well. I hope that I see everyone in GR with a little $ in my pocket.

We're back home, mostly unpacked and almost done ironing. Had a good trip home, 2700 miles. We had a good time in Minneapolis and in Fargo for the weekend, with beautiful weather, 75 each day. John was sitting at the counter in a tavern watching the evening news on television. In comes Blondie and sits next to him, also watching the news. Then the news report shows a man on top of a five-story building, saying he is going to jump off. John says I'll bet twenty bucks that he will jump. Blondie says I'll bet he won't.
Soon the man jumps off the building. Blondie says you win and starts to give John twenty dollars. But John says I can't take your money, because I knew he was going to jump, as I had seen this on the news about an hour ago.
Blondie says, I saw the same news report, but I didn't think he would do it again.

Nancy told me to put something on the family board. But I am in a rut--every day and week is about the same. Who wants to know that most every day I eat, sleep, get up have some breakfast, read two newspapers and a magazine and go bowling. Yes, I am still bowling 4 days a week. I should stop at my age but I am not smart enough for that and there are still people that will take me on their team.
I have some nice tomato plants growing.
I have my reservations for the reunion and looking forward to that.
This is not very intersting I know. I could write a dumb blond story but I am not sure you want another one.
If 3 people want to hear my blond story I will write it.
