It’s beyond love beyond addiction, even beyond the insanity of obsession, it has become about survival. When someone asks have you ever been in love you might answer yes believing in your heart that you actually have. Maybe you at times weren’t able to eat or sleep, and maybe you even suffered this for a length of time. But I doubt there are many people in this world who truly know the depths and ability of true human emotion. Fortunately or unfortunately I have experienced feelings beyond words, and because of what I do know to be true I dare not speak about what else is possible or impossible. Picture this one day your walking along and life is as normal as normal can be and a bus comes along knocking you to the street for most people it is an ordinary accident and you live your hurt but you live, but in this case when the bus hits you it knocks you on to train tracks and an oncoming train can’t miss so you are run over a second time, yet miraculously after a few months in a hospital you can bring yourself to a standing position, then the hospital catches fire you suffer smoke inhalation and 3rd degree burns allover your immobile body, they air lift you to a burn unit in another hospital but the chopper crashes on the way, oh no your not dead that would be too easy see there is a lesson here for you to learn, don’t know what that is oh well just assume it’s part of a master plan for you to learn something. Along comes a doctor , he has bandages , pain killers, morphine and everything else necessary to take away the pain, but his bag is locked and he can’t manage to find the key or to rip it open. He is helpless. All you can do is look at him with plea in your eyes wishing for him to help, but all he can do is comfort you until the ambulance gets there. What do you do you feel sorry for him feeling so helpless. Oh did I mention there is much irony to this. So the ambulance finally arrives with oxygen (cause god forbid you suffocate and die) and they have extra strength Tylenol for the pain, when all you want is anesthesia until your completely healed but all of the anesthesiologists are on strike. New hospital months pass wounds are healing fine just a few minor scars after 85 surgeries and 86 infections. Your ok . So you think.
A man comes waltzing into your heart when you least expect it, turns your heart inside out, loves you like no one else ever has and you return his intense passion. He speaks the words of angels and you are all ears. His actions move human hearts and you long to have his. His voice, and unsung melody straight into your core, his hair his eyes his smile capture your very essence and they give you wings to fly. But you only want to fly to him. He is magic and music, he is air and water, he is a loving embrace of all that is beautiful and he adores you. I know this man. I have adored this man and he has shown me the beauty of his soul. How much would you wish for this in your life. Be careful what you wish for. There is no cure from him and I am still trying to survive him. He is not mine, he attached himself through matrimony to another heart long before he knew mine. So I dare not touch him. I have not shared daybreak or moonlight with him, We have not shared his bed or our flesh. We have only shared our souls.. Sharing your soul is the most pure form of love. And in it’s purest form like any other drug can render you helpless or worse instill death. Not death in the sense of leaving the earth, but in the sense that once your soul knows another it is lost without it, the fire inside goes out and is only rekindled in the others presence. Separate you are nothing, hopeless helpless, alone, lonely even amongst a crowd. But joined there is renewed life, glory and endless capability. Is this what Almitra meant when he said “ love has but one desire and that is to fulfill itself.” If it finds you worthy and beckons to you , you must follow it. For if you back out of loves thrashing floor you will laugh but not all of your laughter and cry but not all of your tears. If you do follow him then you shall know the pain of too much tenderness. Remember the time you were hit by the bus and the train caught in the fire and the chopper crashed, You beg for that simpler time when you know another soul and you cannot touch it or love it or share yours with it. Your are not but in your dreams where it is that you can only be together. you go through your life but you do not live, at times your heart cries out to so loud you can barely hear anything else, and when you take a breath it is never as deep as it needs to be. The worst of all of this emotion is that it is shared by both souls simultaneously with no end in sight. So now I ask you have you ever been in love? I dare you to love another as I have and as I do now. Will you survive?

"Help Wanted" a story -- Paul Everett, 11:53:11 07/22/04 Thu

An extremely well-dressed and successful young executive was driving to a meeting when he found that the front left tire on his Lexus was flat.

“What am I going to do?” he thought. But then he saw a gas station up ahead. It was a rundown shack with a grizzled man in overalls sitting on a porch with pools of oil, but at least it was a gas station; in the window was a large sign saying “help wanted”. The executive drove up and got out of the car and explained the situation.

“Why sure!” said the attendant “I’m lookin’ for a boy to work for me and help me out, so we’re kinda short-handed…”. He looked over the dapper, dignified and impeccably dressed executive’s very expensive navy blue pinstriped business suit, his imported silk tie and gleaming cufflinks and white shirt, his polished black shoes, his hundred dollar haircut and his $1500 briefcase.

“You must be one of them executives!” said the attendant. “My name is Bud!”

“Yes…yes I am an executive” said the executive in a condescending tone, as he straightened his tie and checked the shine on his shoes. “My name is Mr. James Porter…I am making an important presentation today! My whole career depends on it. Now please get to work! What are you doing?!”

Bud was pulling out a huge pail of water. “You get a free car wash today, sir!”

“I don’t have time for that!” cried Mr. Porter.

“Now, don’t worry! You upper class folks are always worryin’!” And at that moment, Bud’s foot hit the pail of water, and it toppled over, completely soaking Mr. Porter’s expensively shod feet.

“NOW LOOK WHAT YOU'VE DONE!!” yelled Mr. Porter. “My feet are drenched through! Do you know how much these shoes cost! Someone like YOU doesn’t have to worry about this!”

“Oh, sir! Please accept my apology! All over your nice fancy shoes! Well, it’s a fine day…just take off yer shoes and socks and let ‘em dry! Nobody is gonna see ya!”

“Take off my shoes and socks! I suppose I have no choice! I’m just glad that my colleagues can’t see this!” said Mr. Porter, as he sat on the porch and slowly, grudgingly slid his feet out of his highly polished black tasseled shoes and then took off his silk socks. Bud picked up the shoes and whistled with admiration.

“Mighty fancy!” he said, with a grin. “Classy kicks!”

“Put my shoes down immediately!” said Mr. Porter coldly.

Mr. Porter carefully arranged his suit and tie as if to make up for the indignity of going barefoot.

“Lemme show ya somethin’, Mister Porter” said Bud, who got into the car and drove it forward – and ran over Mr. Porter’s briefcase, ruining it.

“MY BRIEFCASE!” yelled the businessman.

“Sorry, sir! But I have to tell ya something!” said Bud, who was bending over the engine.

“I didn’t ask you to look at the engine” shouted Mr. Porter. “You destroyed my briefcase!!”

“But you got a problem!” said Bud. “Look! Get closer!”

Mr. Porter leaned over the engine. “I don’t see anything…”

“Closer!” said Bud.

“I still don’t…” and Mr. Porter began to lift his head, and felt himself stuck.

“My tie!” he yelled. “My necktie…and my suspenders! They’re caught in the engine!”

“Look what ya done, sir! I’ll get ya free!”

“I DIDN’T DO THIS!” yelled Mr. Porter, but he couldn’t move at all. His tie and his suspenders had gotten tied up in the engine….somehow.

“Now just hold still!” said Bud, and with three quick snips, Mr. Porter was free, and his tie and suspenders had been sliced in pieces.

“ARE YOU INSANE?!” yelled Mr. Porter. “You’ll pay for those!! How will I go to work like this…”

“Sir, I had to cut ya loose! There was no other way!” Bud said.

“Mr. Porter” said Bud. “I’m gonna need yer help in getting’ that tire out of the back…I can’t lift it, ya see. I got lumbago.”

“What?!” said Mr. Porter. “You expect ME to do it? Look at this suit! This is a two thousand dollar suit! It was tailored for me…I can’t get it dirty, and this tie is hundred dollar shirt! I’m an executive…I don’t do menial work…”

“I’m sorry, sir…” said Bud. “There’s no other way! Why don’t ya take off yer suit jacket?”

“This is an outrage!” cried Mr. Porter. But he angrily pulled the jacket of his pinstriped suit, his cufflinks and his starched white shirt and placed them on a wooden table. Then he pulled the tire out of the trunk.

But just then his bare feet hit a patch of oil, and he staggered backwards and fell; the filthy tire fell on top of him. He felt his head hit something soft. Bud ran over and said: “Mr. Porter, it’s a good thing your head hit the tar! It broke yer fall!” The executive pushed the tire off, and felt the grease, gravel and tar all over his t-shirt and his face. He lifted what had been a manicured hand to his head and felt a mass of something gooey.

“My hair!” he yelled.

Bud ran over with the scissors. Then he realized, to his horror, that his suit pants had been ripped all the way down the back. “MY SUIT! MY SUIT PANTS ARE RUINED!!”

“Here, lean on this and stand up!” said Bud, pointing to the wooden table. Mr. Porter reached up and grabbed the table. His suit jacket, shirt and cufflinks fell into the tar.

Mr. Porter yelled, as he stood.

“I gotta cut that tar out, sir! It ain’t gonna come out any other way!” and with a few quick snips, the executive’s neat haircut was replaced by a patchy crewcut.

“WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?” yelled Mr. Porter.

“Here, this will calm ya down!” Bud shoved a bottle of whiskey into Mr. Porter’s hand.

“NO!” yelled the executive. “LOOK AT ME, YOU IDIOT!” Just then, a car drove up. Two people, a man and a woman got out. They stared in shock at Mr. Porter; they took in the sight of him, filthy, barefoot, dressed in torn trousers, yelling and holding a whiskey bottle.

“Oh, no….” whispered Mr. Porter. “I work for them…”

Then they said together: “JAMES PORTER! YOU”RE FIRED! YOU’LL NEVER WORK IN THIS CITY AGAIN!”

“My job….” whispered Mr. Porter….

The next morning, a customer drove up to Bud’s and Bud called his new assistant to wait on him:. A man in overalls and work boots and a crew cut came out and started to work on the car. “JIMMY! Don’t forget the oil!”

“YES, SIR!” said Jimmy Porter.

A Lexus with a "for sale" sign sat outside.

A help wanted sign lay in the garbage along with the remnants of a pinstriped business suit, a silk tie and white shirt, and suspenders.

In the window was a pair of very expensive polished tasseled gentleman’s tasseled shoes with a sign: “for sale – one pair of classy kicks - once worn by an executive - best offer – socks included”.

Community-based hospitals across the country today announced a national call for entries for its second annual “Face of Stroke” creative contest. This competition was designed to raise awareness of the third leading cause of death and encourage those affected by stroke to express the impact of this deadly, yet preventable, disease on their lives, to memorialize a loved one, or just to show support for this important cause that kills more people than breast cancer, AIDS, or diabetes.

The contest kicks off National Stroke Month and encourages people affected by stroke to create a literary work (poem, short story, etc.), artwork, photograph, song or other creative piece that depicts how stroke has personally affected them. Prizes will be awarded to the top three entries with $500 for Best in Show, $250 for second place and $100 for third place. Entries will also be posted to “The Face of Stroke” gallery on the StrokeSense Web site at www.strokesense.org. Entries can celebrate one’s survival from stroke, honor the memory of a loved one, or just support a cause to turn around the statistics from this killer. Last year’s winners were:

“Stroke affects people from every walk of life,” said Scott Dahl, director, clinical affairs. “The Face of Stroke contest seeks to put a face of the wide range of people affected by this disease. From survivors to caregivers to families, this disease is not just devastating to the patient, but also can be devastating to the lives of those around them.”

Stroke is the third leading cause of death and claims more that 700,000 lives each year. Every 3.1 minutes a person will die of a stroke and a stroke can occur to anyone at any age. A majority of strokes can be prevented or delayed through proper management or elimination of risk factors, such as smoking and high blood pressure.

To combat this deadly, yet highly preventable disease, VHA Inc., based in Irving, Texas, announced the national launch of StrokeSense, a nationwide initiative to raise awareness of stroke and educate doctors and clinicians on best practices to continually improve clinical outcomes of stroke patients. This hospital-based program not only raises community awareness, but it is unique in that it provides clinical training to participating hospitals in VHA’s network of 2,200 not-for-profit health care organizations.

“The devastating effects of stroke take on many forms as stroke is the leading cause of long-term adult disability,” said Dahl. “This contest will allow families and stroke survivors to demonstrate how stroke has affected their lives in a creative way.”

The contest runs through National Stroke Month and to be eligible for the prizes, entries must be received by June 15, 2004. Additional submissions will be accepted on an ongoing basis and will be included in “The Face of Stroke” gallery. Entries can be entered at their local participating hospital or by sending it to VHA, 220 Las Colinas Blvd, Irving, TX 75039 or via e-mail at vhacustomerservice@vha.com. Contestants should send a cover letter with their name, phone number and signature verifying originality of the piece.

Within 7 days I started getting money in the mail!!! I was shocked!!!
I figured it would end soon, but the money just kept coming in!!! In
my first week, I had made about $25.00. By the end of the second week,
I had made a total of over $1,000.00!!! In the third week, I had over
$10,000.00 and it is still growing!!! This is now my fourth week and I
have made a total of just over $42,000.00 and it is still coming in
rapidly!!! It's certainly worth $6.00 and 6 stamps!!! I have spent

Early Winters Snow



The sun was getting closer and closer to the horizon. It had not yet reached the hour of five. The wind was picking up. Snow began to gently fall from the heavens, as snow should. A young couple was slowly walking down the road toward the setting sun. He was taller, dark hair, handsome. Her golden locks were collecting snow as they cantered along. He embraced her with one arm. “I know,” she said as she reached to clear it away.
He reached up and caught her hand as she reached. His fingers folded around hers like it was a fitted glove. He smiled and said, “Don’t… You’re beautiful.”

She smiled and he felt the warmth of her body as he embraced her tight. His lips reached hers as he kissed her tenderly. It was a long kiss, full of young love and old aspirations. It seemed like there was no such dimension as time. They were there for forever and never. It lasted far too long, and ended far too soon.

“C’mon,” He told her, “I’ll make us some hot cocoa.”

She smiled and they began to walk towards the driveway. They reached the door and he opened it for her. He took her coat and gently placed upon the rack. He led her into the living room and set her up on the sofa with a blanket before he left to make the cocoa.

He came back in a few minutes later and set the two cups on the coffee table in front of them. He then bent down to light the fire. It seemed as if no time had passed before he had the flames playfully licking the air above. He sat down and held her close under the blankets. He kissed her lightly on the forehead.

“I love you,” he whispered softly in her ear.

She smiled as she sipped her hot cocoa. Everything was just so right. She laid her head down on his chest and curled up beside him. She looked up at him; her eyes alight with the soft glow of the fire.

He stared out the window at the snow, falling heavy now. This was all he ever wanted. A woman to love, hold, be with. A woman he could share these times with. His eyes glazed over again. He was as warm as the mantle to his right.

He looked down. She appeared to be sleeping. He brushed her hair out of her face and kissed her lightly on the cheek. Then he raised himself and covered her up. She looked so angelic just laying there, her beautiful face so innocent and kind, her chest rising and falling with such grace. And so he sat there watching her rest for what reality would place as an hour.

He walked over to her and kissed her on the forehead yet again. Her eyes fluttered open like tiny butterflies. She smiled such a beautiful smile as she looked into his eyes. She had always dreamed of waking to the kiss of the man she loved.

He smiled back at her and kissed her again. There was so much love between them. The fire was dying down now… But not their flame. Their flame would go on to the end of their lives. They both knew it to be so. They were a match made in heaven, if there ever was. As they held each other close on that night, the stars and the moon shone brighter than they had in months. It was all a perfect dream to them. They just held each other so close, smiling over the others shoulder. Their love would, truly, never end.

STEP 2 – Now, take the #1 name off the list that you see above, move the other names up (6 becomes 5, 5 becomes 4, etc…) and add YOUR name as #6 on the list.

STEP 3 – Change anything you need to, but try to keep this article as close to original as possible. Now, post you amended article to at least 200 newsgroups. (There are hundreds of thousands). All you need is 200, but remember, the more you post, the more money you make! You won’t get very much unless you post like crazy. This is perfectly legal! It was a warm, bright, and sunny day that morning as I walked to catch the bus. Thoughts were whirling around in my head, all dark and dim, but a smile was plastered on my face. “I wish I didn’t have to ride this bus” silently ran through my head the whole way up there. As I stepped on the bus everything seemed to stop, then go into slow motion. Staring and whispers were all I could grasp. I sat in the seat, but I felt as though I was a million miles away just watching my body react. The bus stopped; the people got off; I was all alone again, just the bus driver and me. “Nice day, huh?” She said, I was not really hearing her, so I nodded my head.

Then as I was stepping off the bus, the rain began to pour down. “Why me?” I thought. Hood pulled up, face staring down; I trudged along the wet, cold, rainy road. Finally I made it to the door; hot, muggy air poured over my rain-soaked body, as I pushed the doors open. I could feel the eyes of the people staring at me as I walked to the library. A refuge, books, I can lose myself in a book and forget about my problems. The bell rang. It’s time for class, time for people, and time for pain. That is part of everyday life though right? That’s what I think and that’s what I hear. So why do I wish I didn’t feel anymore? All I can feel is guilt, from making people feel bad for me, when I don’t even want them to. I sat in my seat, and the other people piled in around me. I smiled like I cared. “Hey how are you?” they all asked, but I knew they didn’t really want to know they were just asking to be nice, “Peachy, good, fine” I answered in a lie, like I do everyday, but today will be different; I won’t take it any more. It’s another bell, another class, and more people. “Can I go to the bathroom?” I asked quietly. She said, “all right.” So I walked out the door, to escape all the people.

Once in the bathroom, the tears began to fall. I couldn’t stop them, even if I had tried to. All the pain I had held in for so long finally made its way out. The bells rang, and so I pulled myself together, wiped my tears, and grabbed my books. I had to go to the mirror to check for mascara running down my cheeks, I wiped the mascara away with a paper towel, and walked to class. “You’re late” she stated. Embarrassed, I settled into my seat and began to type my poems. I’m supposed to do work, but when I’m feeling like this, the only way I can get it out of my system is to write. Today, it wasn’t working, the hurt was too great and the pain was too real to stop clawing at my soul. People said things to me but when I write, I don’t listen, I just write.

The bell rang for lunch, but I don’t eat. I don’t need to. Look at me. As everyone else was eating lunch and making jokes, I carried my body, and my pencil to the door. I went outside and sat as the tears fell silently from my face, leaving wet droplets on my shirt. My body filled with terror as I realized what I was about to do, but I knew I couldn’t stop myself, I couldn’t before. I scraped my wrist with all I had in me, but I heard footsteps, so I stopped. They’re gone. I continued. Scraped, harder. It’ll be over soon, tears fell down, but finally I did it. The blood began to flow as the stress and pain are released from my body in this physical way. Suddenly, terror over took my body, like I’d never known before, I had done this already but I had never seen this much blood, it was like a stream, flowing. Starring at it, I was mesmerized, red, the darkest you had ever seen, like royalty. I realized I’d made the biggest mistake anyone could make, if they lived to be 200 years old.

I stood to my feet as the blood gushed down my arm, till I felt as if I wouldn’t have the strength to go on. I rushed myself to the bathroom. Everyone was starring but no one made any attempt to ask what was wrong. They didn’t know what was going on, but knew I was scared. As I made my way to the bathroom I checked to make sure no one was there. I did not want any one to know, so that I could go home with out the guilt of knowing someone felt sorry for me, I hated sympathy. Relief poured over me, as I tried to stop the bleeding, I covered it with a rag. I’m finished.

Slowly the bell rang, everything stopped inside me, the feelings turned off, like a switch. It’s a habit though, I can’t talk, no one can know. I walked out the door with a smile on my face, but with terror stirring in my heart. No one knows anything happened. They never know, but I can try again. Everyone talks to me, but when they ask, “what’s wrong?” and I say “nothing” they forget about me and go on with their business. They say they’re my real friends, but if you really loved someone, wouldn’t you push for them to talk? Bell rang again; schools out so finally I can go home. Not like home is much better with everyone that lives around me but at least then I can’t try again because they all know, and I can’t be alone. After I get off the bus I walked home, thinking about the ride, the teasing, the staring, and the hurtful words. It was more than I could take. “God, why can’t I be dead?” I screamed, I thought it was out loud, but guess not, since no one heard me, but then again no one hears this little voice. Making my way home, all I could think about was being gone. I crawled into bed, thinking no one cared, but knowing, “Tomorrow is another day.”

VHA Inc. and community hospitals across the country today announced a national call for entries for “The Face of Stroke” creative contest, to raise awareness of the third leading cause of death and encourage those affected by stroke to express the impact of this deadly, yet preventable, disease on their lives.
The contest kicks off National Stroke Month and encourages people affected by stroke to create a literary work (poem, short story, etc.), artwork, photograph, song or other creative piece that depicts how stroke has personally affected them. Prizes will be awarded to the top three entries with $500 for Best in Show, $250 for second place and $100 for third place. Entries will also be posted to “The Face of Stroke” gallery on the StrokeSense Web site at www.strokesense.org.

“Stroke affects people from every walk of life,” said Scott Dahl, director, clinical affairs. “The Face of Stroke contest seeks to put a face of the wide range of people affected by this disease. From survivors to caregivers to families, this disease is not just devastating to the patient, but also can be devastating to the lives of those around them.”

Stroke is the third leading cause of death and claims more that 700,000 lives each year. Every 3.1 minutes a person will die of a stroke and a stroke can occur to anyone at any age. A majority of strokes can be prevented or delayed through proper management or elimination of risk factors, such as smoking and high blood pressure.

To combat this deadly, yet highly preventable disease, VHA, based in Irving, Texas, announced the national launch of StrokeSense. StrokeSense is a nationwide initiative to raise awareness of stroke and educate doctors and clinicians on best practices to continually improve clinical outcomes of stroke patients. This hospital-based program not only raises community awareness, but it is unique in that it provides clinical training to participating hospitals in VHA’s network of 2,200 not-for-profit health care organizations.

“The devastating effects of stroke take on many forms as stroke is the leading cause of long-term adult disability,” said Dahl. “This contest will allow families and stroke survivors to demonstrate how stroke has affected their lives in a creative way.”

The contest runs through National Stroke Month and to be eligible for the prizes, entries must be received by June 13, 2003. Additional submissions will be accepted on an ongoing basis and will be included in “The Face of Stroke” gallery. Entries can be entered at their local participating hospital or by sending it to VHA, 220 Las Colinas Blvd, Irving, TX 75039 or via e-mail at vhacustomerservice@vha.com. Contestants should send a cover letter with their name, phone number and signature verifying originality of the piece.

What is their problem? It’s like they don’t notice I’m there when they’re yelling at each other day and night, every day. It’s like they don’t care that I’m sitting there listening to them tell each other things about me, about my grades, about my friends, about MY life. I’m their only child, so I naturally take up every spare inch of space in their lives, but it’s only obvious to me that they don’t really CARE. Maybe they do notice, I don’t know. These are supposed to be the “Growing Up Years.” Yeah, I guess I’m growing, but am I really growing up?

Anna tells me to ignore it. Lacey tells me to listen to them, but not let it hurt me. Little do they know how hard it is to do just that. How much it hurts to have to hear it, over and over, the pit of dread in my stomach getting bigger and bigger, synchronized with the heavy footsteps coming up the stairs to my sanctuary, my room, along with those hateful, horrible words, getting louder all the while. Before I can stop them, tears spill out, and then I join the screaming, asking them why they do this, what makes them hate me, what I did. The yelling stops, and instead it’s filled with a guilty silence, so uncomfortable that I almost wish they were screaming again. Instead of saying something soothing to them, ensuring them that they aren’t as bad of parents as I give them credit for, I say nothing, and sprint as far and as fast as I can out of the house, slamming the door and not caring where I go. I’m so blinded by unshed tears I don’t think it would have mattered if I had had a destination. The angry frustration that had been slowly building up inside of me, that I had finally let go of in my room, has been replaced with a dead, hollow feeling of loneliness. I know what they would yell at me for now: self pity, not being strong enough, not trusting them. But when their words hurt so badly that the stitch in my side after sprinting for what seems like forever feels better than going back there, how am I supposed to feel? They don’t understand. No one does. What makes the situation even worse is that no one comes to look for me. It’s like that sudden moment of regret and guilt that my outburst inflicted upon them had never happened and they still hadn’t realized that their daughter, their only daughter, had feelings…and just wasn’t there anymore.

My teachers ask what’s wrong. Why I haven’t been doing my homework, or hanging out with my friends, or paying attention in class. They start calling my house, asking my parents if there are any situations they should be aware of. If they only knew. If I could only hate my parents enough to tell someone how bad it’s getting. If I could only be a little more selfish and just blurt it out to someone. When they come screaming and stomping up the stairs to confront me about these phone calls I just sit there. This unbelievable feeling of premonition comes over me and I know that when Dad walks through that door, so mad he’s not even yelling anymore, just sort of standing there sputtering and turning red, he’s going to hit me. The split second before it happens, I see it all like it’s happening in slow motion. His hand stands suspended in mid air and I can hear my mother’s voice, as if from hundreds of miles away, yelling and hollering and ranting about the phone calls. Then I’m slapped, literally, back into reality, and there is all of the sudden a deep, resounding silence in my used to be sanctuary. My father stands there, all traces of anger gone, with a shocked expression on his face and staring at his hand. My mother has her hand clapped over her mouth, her eyes slowly filling with tears. I silently stand up and speak for the first time in two days. “I’m telling someone. I can’t live like this anymore. I hate this, I hate you! All you do anymore is yell at me, about me, to anyone who will listen! I get so scared whenever I hear your footsteps in the hall, coming up the stairs that I freeze…I just stop thinking. I thought that maybe I loved you too much to tell someone how bad the yelling has gotten here, but…come on, you just hit me! Can’t you stop lecturing me for one minute and let me live? Let me be happy? You sit there telling, no screaming at me, about how selfish I am, but you don’t stop and take a breath and think long enough to realize how selfless I am. I’m tired. So tired. I just…I want to go to sleep without worrying about one of you waking up and yelling at me for something completely trivial and meaningless. I want to come home from school without having to worry about one of you stamping up the stairs to scream at me again. I want…I want more than anything for both of you to just not be like this. God, do you know what it’s like to have to worry about being perfect and not making mistakes so that your parents won’t spend hours screaming at you instead of worrying about zits or getting a date to the dance? Do you? Well I do, thanks to you two. What, is this another one of your life lessons or something? That it was all just a game you were playing to see how strong I was? Well, guess what? I don’t want to be strong anymore. I don’t want to have to do this anymore. I want to just…not be like this.” I was crying again after this, and they were standing there, unsure of what to say. I started to walk out of the room and they, almost instinctively, began to tell me how sorry they were, how they can’t believe what happened, how they hate themselves. I stop at this and turn around. “You hate yourselves?” I say right back. “You know what? You should. Because I hate you too.” And I walk back out the door, out of my parent’s house, and out of that life. I was a chrysalis no more…I guess I had finally grown up.

Three blocks from my house, I smelled rain. Someone was having a barbeque. I heard thunder roll. Two blocks away, the hairs on my arms began to crawl. As I approached the halfway point, lightning struck immediately in front of me.

Blinded, I staggered the final block to my house, rubbing my eyes, the stench of sulfur filling my nose. Fuzzy lines connected to form the shape of my house before me as the smell of sulfur was slowly replaced with that of my burning home. Before I could blink again, the bottom fell out. I have never experienced rain as heavy as that day – the fire was extinguished quickly. My eyes were yet to blink – the sky opened up and a rainbow appeared over my house.

My vision was perfect – a rainbow rose high over my home and disappeared into the clouds far away. Much closer, perfectly framed in the rainbow, a tornado approached.

everyone can learn to fly

Fighting against the problems we’ve had for years
Made your own place with blood, sweat and tears
Fighting on despite the deepest of fears
I think we all could learn a better lesson or two
If we took a moment here to look at those like you
And finally see what one man can really do

One voice of dissension can do more than you think
For minds can change faster than one can blink
