Unisys still holds the patent to this compression technique outside the USA. However, this patent might be gone completely in 2005.
Still, it might be risky to use LZW compression in components and tools since you'll never know what Unisys will do next. I think it's better if the world just stays Unisys-free and just waits until Unisys goes tits-up by just denying the company any market-share...
