Subject: Where in the rule book does it say you must try to win every game?
In reply to: TT 's message, "Re: Didn't go" on 18/03/08 7:13pm

Why should you try to win a game if it means long term your club will be worse off? It's logical for any intelligent thinking person when you're given the choice to take short term pain for long term gain, dont you you take the hit and put it behind you and you move forward? Mate it applies to anything, work, private life, family, friends, whatever situation you're in that is the most wise and sound choice surely. If you take the short term win at the detriment of your long term outlook then you are an idiot and you have nobody else to blame for sitting in a pile of shit unable to get out.

Furthermore I just cant understand how any lucid thinking person could blame Carlton for this. The system rewards failure and at that point in Carlton's history planning for the future was what was desperately required for the club to have a better long term outlook. It was a no brainer, under the rules that the AFL have chosen to run the game under, the rules which have caused me to lose much of my passion for the game, Carlton simply had to lose the game against Melbourne. I can just imagine if they'd won, it's laughing stock time for rival supporters, Carlton do their future a diservice by being stupid enough to win that absolutely meaningless game and all the haters celebrate with glee. Can you imagine how this messageboard would've cranked off at a Carlton win? I'm not sure you even need any further proof than our haters celebrating a Carlton victory that day....and you know that's how it would've been TT, you know tiger fans and magpie fans and bomber fans the would've laughed their arses off at us had we won.

You yourself know I was on record as saying i wanted Carlton to lose the last 11 games of the season. If winning wasn't their priority and developing the kids was their priority, then I totally approve of what Carlton did. It was hardly a secret, you make out like you got a scoop from the coaches box but Greg Swann was on record months out from the end of the season as saying he'd like to lose every game and get the extra picks. Half of our supporter base thought as much, whoever told you your news was telling you something everyone knew for themselves already. I have little doubt they didn't try to win the last game and I approve 100% with it. Couldn't give a rats arse if Libba is telling his version of the truth or not. If anyone gets their knickers in a knot about it then frankly get some nuts, the ethics angle is bullshit it's just fake politically correct posturing from people with an axe to grind against Carlton. AFL is about winning a flag, you do not let someone plant their foot on your head underwater without doing something about it. Every club would've lost that last game if placed in the same situation, anyone who's doesnt think that is lieing or deluded.
