* this is a disclaimer the poster pugsville has not attended many matches, and watched very few non-collingwood games, thus didnt observe hawthorn games and not that keenly when he did. (including the grand final) So obiviously what follows is mostly based on cheap prejudice!

Hawthorn tactical system appears to be a very significant factor in their sucess. Personally i not a bug fan as the hawthorn players are trained to run away on a turnover to go occupy space as part of their defensive rolling zone.

this relies much more on a group defense and intelligent reading of the ball chopping off than manning up their opponets one on one. It may clarkson uses this because their key position defenders dont look good in the one on one stakes.

Gillilham, Croad, Hodge very good at reading the play across half back zoning and chopping out, then runnning and using ball.

But becuase Hawthorn play so systematically if it breaks down it is pretty significant and would be basically a lost game.

Now that they are premiers their gameplan & players would be evaluated and scrutinised much more.

Hawthorn look a very very good side, but do they appear more invincible and preimership faverourites than Geelong 12 months ago.

Croad has to come back from injury. Crawford more than handy is gone.

I may well be basing all this on a small number of hawthorn games I watched mostly in the first half of the season.

If the league collectively finds a few answers to the Hwathorn tactical problem hawthorn could conceiveably have a reasonably poor year. The hawthorn players seem very well drilled and this runway to space could be hard to reverse at an instinctive level. That side they do have two outstanding forwards and maybe a more conventional plan B will be every bit as sucessful but in a man on man game I do think their key backs can be exposed.

Buddy Franklin is a scarey forward. any side containing a dynamic strong goal kicker is hard to beat when he's on his game. Fev, (even in a side lacking depth and a backline) Jonathon brown, Franklin.
