Does anyone remember Nat and his wife ( think her name was Nettie) owning a bungalow colony, Forest Lake. You rode in and there was an office and a canteen and a water pump which at that time pumped actual spring water. There was a general store and a casino, a big house and smaller single bungalows. We played softball, had dances and daycamp. It was a great time and so long ago.

- SUNSHINE VILLAGE IN BURLINGHAM NEW YORK -- mike yelman, 16:17:57 03/07/08 Fri
I went to a bungalow colony in the remote parts of burlingham new york called Sunshine Village. It was owned by the Meshkow family, Ethel was the mother, son Eddie, daughter Carol, and another daughter whose name escapes me. It was truly in the middle of nowhere. We had no phone, no radio, no tv, no newspaper. fathers came up on friday nights and left sunday nights or monday morning, not to be seen or heard from until the following week. since most mothers didnt drive, we were stuck there all week and left to entertain ourselves. There was a nice pool there, a casino that showed movies on tuesday nights, a small, small store under the owners bungalow that sold milk, bread, candy. an all important coke machine (10 cents) also under ethel's bungalow. i remember when you needed to purchase something from the store, you would stand under ethel's window and scream for someone to open the store. i believe carol usually would come down with a cigar box of money to serve you. the washing machins were also under her bungalow. eddie meshkow had the nicest bungalow on the propety. it was the only one that was a 1 family unit. all other bungalows were 2 units connected. for fun we would "climb the roots" , fish by the pumphouse, go to the lake (where nina's candy store was (always empty and dirty), go the the "marble rock" or ince we got older we would walk to the general store "hamiltons" a number of miles away. there was a restaurant called roberts (also i believe a hotel) just past hamiltons. a real good place to eat was "the cabin", known for their sausage sandwhiches. the3 closest big town was pine bush which had the big supermarket "valley supreme", a custard stand (dairy queen?) and my favorite store, seymours, which sold among other things, toys. the years i went there were about 1959-1967. some of the people i remember are billy keston, randy turner, larry dorf, roert levine, etc. if anybody remembers this very unique place, feel free to email me at myelman@aiwire.com

- The Olympic -- steve, 15:23:51 09/01/08 Mon
The Olympic Hotel was located between Woodridge and Fallsburg. It was about one mile from the Claremore Hotel, which was next to Masher's Bungalow Colony, and across the street, the Royal Bungalow Colony. Each of these was about 1 mile from "downtown" Woodridge. I stayed at both of these bungalow colonies, and clearly remember, as I walked to the Old Falls in Fallsburg, seeing the Olympic, with its main house on a hill, perhaps 200 yards from the road that passed by. If you walked towards Woodridge, you came to the Claremore, and if you made a right turn at that point, you would come to Steve's Riding Academy, where I worked for a few summers.

Alot of Italian people went there. I believe a Mr. Sousa owned it. It was such a fun place with lots to do. I remember Paul Anka's recording of "Diana" playing at the club house and me cha cha ing with a friend to the rhythm of the record. I remember walking into the town of Leeds (about a mile and half) have ice cream soda's in the general store and browsing around. A schoolmate of mine also worked there. His name was Jerry Carbone (he was a great singer) does anybody remember him? I will always have alot of fond membories of Pleasant Acres of my family getting together and enjoying ourselves.

I spent all of my summers in Parksville, New York, right near Liberty. For the most part my parents and I stayed at a hotel called Sunnyland. Its big claim to fame is that Bobby Darin worked their as a singer, band member and waiter in the children's dining room. I have marvelous memories of this place. Is anyone else around who remembers Sunnyland?
I also spent lots of time and the Spring Lake Hotel also in Parksville, and the Paramount Hotel. Other Parksville hotels and which I spent time or worked were The Klass Hotel, the New Brighton Hotel, The Tanzville, The Grand Hotel and others whose names I forget at the moment.
I would love to hear from anyone who has memories of those wonderful shlock houses of yore. Anyone who recognizes the term shlock house, was probably staff in some form or other. :-)
All the best to all of you,

It is amazing to see some of the names I remember so vividly as I child. My family came to Goodman's from previous summers Toro Hill in the summer of 1976 when I was four. I was well known for my memry and reciting the U.S. Presidents as a child. I went to summer camp every year through 1984. I had such great times in camp and just running around all day and night. I saw posts from Randy Schechter, Beth & Dawn Levy, and Brian Walker. Those were great days and I miss them a lot. I am going to try and go back to Woodridge in July on my way to Vermont and see what became of the old girl. I will be prepared for anything, I hope they let me on the grounds to see if anything is the same; the ball field, the swimming pools, the tennis courts. It wasn't a five star resort, be we has really good times at Goodman's.
Sincerely,
Peter S. Russ

- ULSTER HEIGHTS, WOODBOURNE, LOCH SHELDRAKE, MONTICELLO, LIBERTY -- KATO, 02:56:51 12/24/03 Wed
Wow! Talk about Nostalgie!!!
I grew up in southern New York, but the catskills seems were always a part of my life. Route 17, exit 107, later we opted for exit 114, and very rare up to exit 100 Liberty.
(I don't think I'm messing those numbers, have them quite lodged in my memory banks.) I haven't been there in 15 years.
Don't know where to start. Just recall all the hotels, resorts, bungalow colonies and them some, all from the late 60s to mid 80s.
Camp, work and college years, and alot of hiking, canoeing, all up in sullivan and ulster counties.
Theatres:
Drive In @ Loch Sheldrake with the small ice cream stand in front. saw some great flicks there, when we all would tailgate out to those areas.
Woodbourne movie theatre;
how sad, such a beautiful interior place, but it seemed it would never live up again. I believe I saw "Roller Coaster" there back in the mid 70s.
Monticello Rivoli theatre;
saw some oldies but goodies there, alot of b rated stuff.
Jamesway shopping center theatre;
saw ET there in 82 there. saw plenty of others.
(is jamesway still around?)
Liberty theatre;
saw "Airplane" and probably went back 2 more times to watch it back in the 70s.
Fallsburg Rialto (?);
saw a few movies there, but can't recall which ones.
Restaurants:
Lefty's in Monticello. Definite... best onion soup back then, dill pickles and sauerkraut at your dispose.
Lucky Dip in Woodbourne. great simple pizza. and the only place in new york it seemed that had an arcade.
Pizza Hut in Ellenville, was just that though for pizzas. It was great, we always would have plenty of pizzas with pitchers of coke.
Diner in Ellenville, when we would freeze up at night, we would head out here for an early breakfast, they were always open.
Diner in Loch Sheldrake, never understood the hours but they had some of the cheapest food available, I believe I would pay $1.50 for a full breakfast...
Franky & Johnny's Hurleyville, very homey and just delicious food.
Worst Restaurant: Pizza Shack in Loch Sheldrake. The worst pizza, the worst sub sandwiches, the worst everything. it was just pathetic. But easy to get to and feed the worm..
Bars:
Gwenn's Loch Sheldrake. What a blast during my college years up at sullivan. happy hour gallore!!!
Bum & Kels, Loch Sheldrake. Now this was my first bar I would hang out, and the first for all... It was thee place to be. I have stories to tell about this place.
Willies in Ulster Heights. Just a typical upstate bar. great place to hang around and shoot pool. (I recall, the day the gas prices escalated to .80 cents/gal next door, and we just tanked up a gallon to get by)
Woodbourne;
probably was the most home for me. I loved the roads in the area, up around Ulster hieghts, route 52, 42, through grahamsville, big indian, neversink. This was the area just to go cruising around. The sullivan prison, the fields in front. the pharmacy, laundromat, the bridge, the intersection, gas station, this seemed to be the place to be at times, and don't ask me why. we would travel through from 107, fallsburg and into woodbourne. too many hotels to list. (alongt he way, for the longest time, there was an old gas station on the side road from 17 to fallsburg, which had the price .36/gal of gas. It was there for ages. I wonder if its still up there)
Ellenville;
enter it from Wurstboro, watching the gliders glide around the skies, to watching people jump off the mountains and hang glide around too. This was always an interesting drive. The best supermarkets were here, but can't recall which ones they were... I want to say grand union or price chopper, but it doesn't make sense now. Best ice cream was at wurtsboro, last custers stand.
Liberty;
good ole' Sullivan's department store on the corner. I don't know how much we ended up spending there, but it seems alot of my clothes came from then at one time. What was the bakeries name? can't recall. great bakery!!! Ho Jos at times for grand slam breaksfasts too. Grosingers, I recall that Vanessa (last name) used to sing there at the time or before she was nominated as Miss America. (or is this my imagination running?) Also purchased my first attempts of alcohol beverages there.
Monticello, Kiamesha Lake;
The Concord... I used to work there for a few summers. what a blast. the maitre'd "Steamboat"... my training waiter "Charles"... the rest is memories. Served alot of celebrities, but "jerry cooney" (boxer) was a fantastic tipper. the gallo wine conventions there were incredible!!!
The bowling alley there too was great, kiamesha lanes. The Ice making company at the lakes edge.
Hurleyville;
what a great small little town in the middle of no where. the park before hand, from loch sheldrake. used to go jog around the area, with the abandoned morningside hotel. It was alot of fun in those hills, loch sheldrake was our small little college town, with a deli and a small liquor store. forgot the old bar across from the PO. we would always get looks into the place, so we stopped bothering them. I was there, the day hotel evans was being razed.
Again, too much to mention, too many places to state, so I tried to subcategorize. Hotels bungalows, just too many to list!!!
If anyone has any photos to share, I'd appreciate any. Have searched the web for photos and its limited. If you have any photos of the areas, please send it out to me. I'd appreciate it. I work and live overseas, don't know when I'll be back to visit the area.
Wanna chat about it, respond back.
Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, Happy New Years.
vegging out for the holiday time, and going through all these notes here...

After 16 years as a seasonal "Guest" 1969 marked the 1st summer I was going to be a Staff member at the Commodore Hotel in S Fallsburg. This meant I would bunk at the Staff House & finally be unshackled from the prison of my Mom's bungalow!! My parents now could have a room in one of the annex buildings. This proved to be a life-altering arrangement!
Now I was the waiter for the childrens diningroom, which had meals a full hour earlier than the adults. Being my first foray into the kitchen I learned numerous new words...livestock, underliners, monkey dishes, burnishing silver, sides, B & B's...
I was to share a room with Jack the lifeguard, 3 years my senior. To get up for my first day on the job I set my alarm clock for 6:00 AM. As soon as the bell rang, Jack grabbed it & threw it against the wall yelling "I don't get up until 9:00!! Don't EVER wake me up early again!!"
As I feared for my life I moved the bed to the other corner of the room & hoped the rising sun on my face would be enough to wake me silently. Son-of-a-gun it worked!
The 2nd floor rooms all had 2 sets of bunk beds. This was were the action was!!! 4 of the guys in one room were all from Queens which of course is a foreign country to a Brooklynite. When I ventured upstairs all 4 were passing around a bowl-o-hash. It was a great opportunity to get my first high. The Stones were playing Sympathy For The Devil on the stereo (an LP for those who remember). I took my first toke & my innocence left me along with the lung my cough expelled. As I got used to the nuances of actually holding the puff I discovered that the hash was excellent.
I I found myself staring the 3D cover of Their Satanic Majesties Request as Gary, 1/2 Goy, was pointing out the faces of The Beatles hidden among the images. The bowl was refilled a few times & the room seemed to quiver. I knew I would NEVER be the same again! To this day I still get flashbacks when I hear Sympathy.....
The Summer was magical..coming of age in 1969...more to come.

- Grossinger's -- Sue, 12:52:51 11/03/07 Sat
I would love to hear from anyone who remembers the Barrel Jumping Championships and ice skating at Grossinger's. I studied figure skating in the 60's through mid 70's and used to skate in the shows that preceded the barrel jumping championships. The events were often filmed by ABC Wide World of Sports. Irving Jaffe, Olympic Gold Medalist in speed skating was the sports director at the time. Also, if anyone has any or knows of any pictures or videos from this time period I would love see them.

- Gilberts Hotel -- Mark Hausman, 22:05:08 03/19/08 Wed
Gilberts....Gilberts...Gilberts. What was it about that magical place? It was very middle of the road. A little below Brickmans ( just down the road ) but certainly above the likes of The Gibber or The Aladdin. After all, we did have four bands and an indoor pool! The year that my father Al said I could finally have my own room (1969 ) was a real breakthrough year for me. Girls, naturally, and weed made their presence known. But the first thing to do was furnish my 2 month batchelor pad. Did this mean going to Jamesway or Sullivans? NO. This meant going across the road in front of Gilberts where the overgrown ruin of some kind of staff house or small hotel from the 40's lay in wait. Inside were iron frame beds with those spring things that you put under the mattress. Luckily I didnt have to depend on a mildewy mattress from there. But there were plenty of oak dressers and chiffarobes to be had at the price of just moving them across the street. With my present day knowledge of antiques, I wonder if any of that oak was signed Stickley or perhaps by a lesser company. After all, in the late sixties mission oak was throw away stuff.
The only room that could be spared for the trumpet player ( me ) was the left hand dressing room. The alto sax player got the one on the right. My dad, as music director got a much nicer accomodation in the main wing and the rest of the band were housed with all other lower staff ( counselors, waiters, bellhops, etc. ) in Parker House. The wild goings on there will be discussed in a later entry. I fixed my digs up rather nicely with my brand new Sony LP record player/radio which I could listen to the "Voice of Sullivan County". I was required to vacate the room when the acts turned it back into a dressing room Thursday through Saturday and therein lies a tale.
In some ways dad was very cool to his 16 year old son. ( Other ways not ). Gilberts, like many hotels at the time would feature a late show on Friday nite and on glorious Saturday nite a Late, Late Show. This would entail a stripper or a belly dancer. And beleive me, the belly dancer wasnt from the sultans palace. Anyway, these girls were at the lower end of their profession and didnt have written music per se. We were required to "fake" the small group of selections popular to their craft such as "Night Train" or "St. Louis Blues". However, each artiste had a different order to the tunes that had to be synchronised to each exciting moment of the act, ie. gloves come off play this....bra comes off play that.... You get the idea.
So dad would pick me to go to my room ( now in possession by the stripper.) I'd announce my presence at the door ("Band member, want to run down the order?") At this point I would be admitted to the inner sanctum. Sometimes there was a male handler/ driver but usually not. The girl might be struggling with cornstarching her pasties( some things were bad about the 60's) and with a cig dangling from her mouth, she would lay out the order for me interspersed with my nervous mumbling replies. I got a lot of milage back at Lakewood High with ( admittedly false ) wild purple tales of my Sat. nite adventures. I do recall one Greek girl having no accomodation for the nite and I gallantly offered my humble abode. But I believe it was just small talk 'til dawn. Still kinda young I guess.

- Gilberts Hotel -- Mark Hausman, 18:07:39 02/23/08 Sat
I find that the great majority of postings on this site are uninteresting in that it always seems to be one old mountain rat calling out to others who might remember them or a mutual aquaintance. I suppose if two people click its great and I've had one or two hits in this regard. I thought it would be much more enjoyable to read events in peoples lives, told at length, that occured to them in the Borscht Belt. So to get the ball rolling let us return to So, Fallsburg circa July,1969.......
My father Al was music director of Gilberts hotel that summer. This meant in addition to leading his own 5 piece "show band"( of which I was the trumpeter), he also oversaw three other ensembles. There was the Latin band(La Plata quartet), the lounge trio(Kenny Durrell) and the Teen band (The Plastic Exploding Whatever Whatever.
The season would always start for us right after Memorial day when we would play weekends until July 4th when, of course, you were in for the 8 week duration. During the weeks separating those early weekends in So. Fallsburg sixteen year old me was really heating up with this beautiful and talented shiksa named Nancy H. back home in Lakewood. She played the Salvation Army babe in our HS production of "Guys and Dolls" while I sat in the pit making goo-goo eyes at her. Anyway....It seemed that throughout that month of May our sexual experimentation had gotten more and more intense until, when finally school let out for summer and we were ready to go all the way, I went all the way to Sullivan county leaving my beautiful shiksa behind.
Of course I wrote every day(for a while) on Gilberts green logo stationary and got heartfelt returns from her. It seemed that her trailer trash upbringing was at odds with her Broadway future plans. Things were not good at home that summer for Nancy H.
Let us switch the scene now to a night in Mid July. The Al Hausman 5 are gliding through "Dancing On the Ceiling" and switching half hour sets with the Latin Band. Its that Tuesday nite stalwart of the Mountains known as The Champagne Hour. Gilberts was to cheap to provide a singer and comedian EVERY nite so the beginning of the week was usually movie nite, a free bus to the track, or this Champagne deal. It was your basic marathon dance with the best couple being awarded a bottle of Champers one step up from the proverbial cold duck.
You can imagine my surprise when looking over the golden bell of my trumpet I see the golden hair of mon amour Nancy H. at Gilberts! I smile, she smiles. I wave, she waves. Its ten more minutes until the set is over and I have questions( to say the least). Finally I come down off the stage and pull her over to one of the unused tables on the side. Dad isn't hip to any of this but he will make his presence known soon enough.
She begins to lay it on me and does so in a distraught manner. Ill skip the dialogue and give you the jist of it. Her mother found a chunk of hashish and a pipe in her dresser drawer and rather than talk it out with her, took it to the local PD for verification as to its essence. I can tell you that its essence was above reproach as I had split the ounce with her. So basically she was on the run and turned to me, her ever lovin' man for protection and solace. She was lucky in that this was my first season having my own room apart from my dad(Oh joy!) and as he was a widower Oh joy for him too!. I instantly aged a couple of years and I approached my dad giving him the lay of the land(minus the drug angle) and telling him that my girl would be spending the nite with me in my tiny room backstage. In fact from 8 to 10 this room was the dressing room for that nites traveling acts.
Well, he was having none of it, Despite being a jazz musician, he was Cutty Sark all the way WWII etc. I stood my ground infuriating him as I had never seen before but would continue to see from then on until his cig and booze early death at 61. So at the end of that nites entertainment I whisked my lovely girl to my tiny Taj Mahal for a night of, if not debauch, then certainly one of understanding. It had been a rough day for the kid. But the fun had just begun.
After talking and talking and talking(enough already) we fell into a light doze when at approxamitly 6 AM there was a LOUD banging on my steel door. "Open up. State Police" Surprisingly my first thought is to my stash which I have tucked above the Samsonite ceiling tile over my bed. But we let them in and its apparent that all they want to do is get Nancy home to trailer mom who kinda freaked in a manner resembling my dad's. So they bundled her off and left me to my own devices.
The rest of the summer kinda went like this: I would be rehearsing in the afternoon with dad and the boys. If I blew an entrance or something, rather than correct me directly, he would say to the bass player: "Tell the trumpet to watch out for letter B." He would not speak to me the rest of the summer, but there was a bit of a thaw towards the High Holy Days when we were esconced in our winter resort, The Fabulous Fairmont. But thats another hotel and another story........

I spent the summer of 1969 as a staff member at the Commodore Hotel in Fallsburg (not the one in Swan Lake). My mom, Gladys Lane, was working as Social Director/House Entertainer. It was the first summer I was on staff. I started in the kids diningroom & then was a busboy in the Main Diningroom a few weeks later. Although I only worked there 1 year, it was quite a summer!! Nice little Schlock House!! I don't think the diningroom held more than 200 guests. There was a lake across from the Main building that had a waterfall. There was so much rain that summer that made the current VERY strong. I slipped & went over the falls & the water was coming down so hard it was pushing me under. I thought I was going to drown! It was a great place to hang out & go rowing. As my first time working with the kitchen staff it was a real adventure.
They had a few Bungalows behind the pool & dated Meryl Switsky whose parents rented there.
Really interesting staff members. quite a diverse group. I was at the Staff House, an older bldg across the road. My roommate was Jack the lifeguard on the ground floor. The 2nd floor had all th action...Sex,Drugs & Rock&Roll!!
I saw the Moon Landing on the B&W tv in the TV Room. The Main Desk was situated off the staircase & the stairs were overhead. The Casino & Coffee Shop were in another building up a hill. I remember tasting a Vanilla Cola & discovered it tasted like Cream Soda.
I enjoyed every minute there!!
Would love to hear from any guests or staff who stayed ther, especially from 1969.

- Station Bar in Liberty -- Brian Diamond (reminescent), 12:13:43 11/14/07 Wed
Does anyone remember The Station Bar in Liberty? It was the old RR station turned into a Bar. Live music...peanut shells on the floor...pool table...had spiral staircase to 2nd floor that was used by workers. Was open year round. I remember going there during the Winter season. Ron Hyatt (AKA Ron Jeremy...yes THE Ron Jeremy) were working at the Paramount Hotel in Parksville & we went there often. We picked up Sullivan County Commmunity College girls there. GREAT TIMES!! My family went to Breezy Corners from approximately 1970 to 1980 or so...
We started out there in Bungalow 1 and then move to Bungalow 37. Those were the best years of my life. I was a counselor there :)
My parents were Lorraine and Vinny Ricciotti..my sister Marci and my grandfather (Poppy) were there as well.
I was friends with Wayne Druss, Richie Merlo, Donna Wachtler (Howie Black's niece), the Valenti's, Ira Berman, Caroline Wiesen......
I did go back there about 10yrs ago for a weekend and I found it to be bittersweet
I had so many wonderful memories there and I missed so many of the people that were no longer there. Those are times I wish I could give to my children but it's just not the same.
My name is Lisa Sorgie ( Ricciotti)...I am 47 now, living in Long Island, NY
