My family went to Schreiberville for many years. We couldn't wait to get out of Brooklyn and go up to the country to see our summer friends. The names that I saw on the messages were from my oldest brother friends.
My brother was Paul Sobel My other brother was Richard Sobel and I was Bonnie. My summers were some of the best and worst times of my life. I kept in touch with Richard Cohen and his brother. Laura, Susan and a few others. I remember some girls that were Cynthia, Marney, Karen, Sheila and I am sure if I try I can come up with a lot more. i stopped going to the country when I get to be 15 and we moved to a house by the ocean and didn't need to be out of the city anymore. If anyone remembers me. I was the shortest one there and had curley dark hair and green eyes please e mail me I would like to get a little nostolgic again. I did hear from Grover and we both live in Arizona. Imagine a girl who loved the mountains in the desert. Hope to hear from anyone.

My Grandfather owned the Delano Hotel for most of my childhood. The summers were great and actually nothing like "Dirty Dancing" .....I am looking for some people that either worked there in the sixties, especially when we had all those music groups, etc.
My name Is Ilene Stein (Zink)- All of my cousins on my mother's side lived there with me as well. We were friendly with so many musicians, waiters, and staff so I thought it would be somewhat cool to make some kind of connection. I have been married "forever" have two daughters and four gorgeous grandaughters. Perhaps I could be feeling my age which is why I have become somewhat nostalgic!

- 1969 Summer of Love at Commodore Hotel 2 -- Brian Diamond (Groovin'), 13:19:52 09/10/09 Thu
Continuing my story....It rained all summer long! The lake which was across the road from the Main building was the original swimming location & had a waterfall. It was a beautiful spot! Due to the heavy rains the falls were now pretty brisk. I was hanging there out with some of the other staff & was the last one left. I slipped & went over the falls. It was only a 10 ft drop but the water coming down kept pushing me under. As my life passed before me I could see the headline of the Liberty Gazzette...Summer Waiter Drowns At Lake....I survived! The diningroom staff were returning workers from the previous summer & included the owner's hippie son Mike(?) his girlfriend Merle & there friend who went by the name Stoneley. Long hair & beards! The rest of the staff were clean shaven & neat. We heard about a big concert going on at Bethel & a few of the staff quit to head over. I was too interested in making money as I was now a busboy in the Main Diningroom! I still regret the missed opportunity...

I spent all of my summers in Parksville, New York, right near Liberty. For the most part my parents and I stayed at a hotel called Sunnyland. Its big claim to fame is that Bobby Darin worked their as a singer, band member and waiter in the children's dining room. I have marvelous memories of this place. Is anyone else around who remembers Sunnyland?
I also spent lots of time and the Spring Lake Hotel also in Parksville, and the Paramount Hotel. Other Parksville hotels and which I spent time or worked were The Klass Hotel, the New Brighton Hotel, The Tanzville, The Grand Hotel and others whose names I forget at the moment.
I would love to hear from anyone who has memories of those wonderful shlock houses of yore. Anyone who recognizes the term shlock house, was probably staff in some form or other. :-)

- Community Park, Mountaindale -- Michael Bergman (A very happy childhood), 13:44:26 06/07/09 Sun
After spending several summers in bungalow colonies in the Catskills, my parents bought a small home in Community Park, Mountaindale in 1963. We were there all summer, and on any long weekends or school vacations. (My dad was a NY City school teacher!) My brother Jonathan and I enjoyed our summers in Mountaindale, walking the abandoned train tracks into town, going to the movies in Woodridge, and spending time with our grandparents who stayed at the Avon Lodge every summer. (My sister,Meryl, was a baby, so she probably has minimal recollections of that time.) In the winter, I learned to skate on a pond across from our house. We tobogganed down the big hill in the development. For a couple of summers, my dad was in the house band at the Plaza Hotel in South Fallsburg, so we used to go to events at the hotel. It's a shame that life has gotten so complicated that the small joys of summer in Mountaindale are difficult to find. My kids, and I venture to say, all kids, would benefit from the lack of complexity and the need to create fun in simple ways.

In the mid '50's, my older brother worked in the kitchen for a couple of summers. One summer he and his friends who worked there with him prepared a very special birthday cake for me. I think I was 10 at the time. The Raleigh's of South Fallsburgh. I will never forget.

This was in South Fallsburg, near Silver Lake, around 1953'-59'.It was a realy great place. The whole place was on a large mountain. We would pick blueberries and raspberries, then our mothers would make pies and jams. Our fathers would work back in the city during the week, and come to see us on the weekends. We fished, went swimming ,and played every type of sport. On weekends, there was always a show at the casino. There was always a card game going on.We always found salamanders after the rains, and we always let them go.Sometimes on weekends,we would go into town and see a movie, and go out to eat.Othertimes we would go to Moticello to the horse races. We sometimes went to Mountaindale. It was the most beautiful of all the towns in the Catskills. As you looked up through the center of town, there was the most beautiful mountain. We would go there, because they had the best Pizza anywhere, and we usually went with 5 or more families. They stayed open extra late when we would come ther. Those were the best summers for kids growing up.

- 1969 Summer of Love at Commodore Hotel -- Brian Diamond, 16:13:00 03/28/08 Fri
Following the lead of another Catskill Rat, Mark Hausman, I have decided to share some memories.
My mother, Gladys Lane, worked as PM Singer & MC and AM Social Director at a Hotel every summer. After 16 years as a seasonal "Guest" 1969 marked the 1st summer I was going to be a Staff member at the Commodore Hotel in S Fallsburg. This meant I would bunk at the Staff House & finally be unshackled from the prison of my Mom's bungalow!! My parents now could have a room in one of the annex buildings. This proved to be a life-altering arrangement!
Now I was the waiter for the childrens diningroom, which had meals a full hour earlier than the adults. Being my first foray into the kitchen I learned numerous new words...livestock, underliners, monkey dishes, burnishing silver, sides, B & B's...
I was to share a room with Jack the lifeguard, 3 years my senior. To get up for my first day on the job I set my alarm clock for 6:00 AM. As soon as the bell rang, Jack grabbed it & threw it against the wall yelling "I don't get up until 9:00!! Don't EVER wake me up early again!!"
As I feared for my life I moved the bed to the other corner of the room & hoped the rising sun on my face would be enough to wake me silently. Son-of-a-gun it worked!
The 2nd floor rooms all had 2 sets of bunk beds. This was were the action was!!! 4 of the guys in one room were all from Queens which of course is a foreign country to a Brooklynite. When I ventured upstairs all 4 were passing around a bowl-o-hash. It was a great opportunity to get my first high. The Stones were playing Sympathy For The Devil on the stereo (an LP for those who remember). I took my first toke & my innocence left me along with the lung my cough expelled. As I got used to the nuances of actually holding the puff I discovered that the hash was excellent.
I I found myself staring the 3D cover of Their Satanic Majesties Request as Gary, 1/2 Goy, was pointing out the faces of The Beatles hidden among the images. The bowl was refilled a few times & the room seemed to quiver. I knew I would NEVER be the same again! To this day I still get flashbacks when I hear Sympathy.....
The Summer was magical..coming of age in 1969...more to come.

- Ruins at Rt 17 Exit 107 in Bridgeville -- Alan, 17:34:09 04/10/09 Fri
Directly off the Rt 17 (Exit 107) westbound ramps are old ruins of a large staircase leading up a hill. Near the bottom of the stairs is what looks like the remains of a round fountain. The stairs lead up to what look like the remains of old foundations of one or more buildings. Does anybody know what these ruins are from? I'm assuming they were part of a hotel, one that probably had a great view. If it was a hotel, does anybody know its name?
Thanks.

OK, where is everyone? It's as if we never existed. We spent entire summers together and now it is just a memory. Are you out there? Summers from the early 60's until the place closed late 70's.

Hi! I went to Schreiberville from 1959 to the end when Rose sold it. I was told about this site by Arthur Sinensky. This weekend I saw him and Marsha and Sharon Levine. We laughed telling all of the old stories. Carol Ackerman was with us too and she was my first counselor. I read some of the postings and I remember just about everyone who wrote. I would love to hear from old friends from the colony!

I remember going to camp at Camp Excelsior. I lived in Ellenville. The bus would pick us up and drive up the mountain. We would stay all day and then the bus would take us home. I think my mom really liked those quiet summer days without the kids.

Does anyone remember Nat and his wife ( think her name was Nettie) owning a bungalow colony, Forest Lake. You rode in and there was an office and a canteen and a water pump which at that time pumped actual spring water. There was a general store and a casino, a big house and smaller single bungalows. We played softball, had dances and daycamp. It was a great time and so long ago.

- SUNSHINE VILLAGE IN BURLINGHAM NEW YORK -- mike yelman, 16:17:57 03/07/08 Fri
I went to a bungalow colony in the remote parts of burlingham new york called Sunshine Village. It was owned by the Meshkow family, Ethel was the mother, son Eddie, daughter Carol, and another daughter whose name escapes me. It was truly in the middle of nowhere. We had no phone, no radio, no tv, no newspaper. fathers came up on friday nights and left sunday nights or monday morning, not to be seen or heard from until the following week. since most mothers didnt drive, we were stuck there all week and left to entertain ourselves. There was a nice pool there, a casino that showed movies on tuesday nights, a small, small store under the owners bungalow that sold milk, bread, candy. an all important coke machine (10 cents) also under ethel's bungalow. i remember when you needed to purchase something from the store, you would stand under ethel's window and scream for someone to open the store. i believe carol usually would come down with a cigar box of money to serve you. the washing machins were also under her bungalow. eddie meshkow had the nicest bungalow on the propety. it was the only one that was a 1 family unit. all other bungalows were 2 units connected. for fun we would "climb the roots" , fish by the pumphouse, go to the lake (where nina's candy store was (always empty and dirty), go the the "marble rock" or ince we got older we would walk to the general store "hamiltons" a number of miles away. there was a restaurant called roberts (also i believe a hotel) just past hamiltons. a real good place to eat was "the cabin", known for their sausage sandwhiches. the3 closest big town was pine bush which had the big supermarket "valley supreme", a custard stand (dairy queen?) and my favorite store, seymours, which sold among other things, toys. the years i went there were about 1959-1967. some of the people i remember are billy keston, randy turner, larry dorf, roert levine, etc. if anybody remembers this very unique place, feel free to email me at myelman@aiwire.com

- The Olympic -- steve, 15:23:51 09/01/08 Mon
The Olympic Hotel was located between Woodridge and Fallsburg. It was about one mile from the Claremore Hotel, which was next to Masher's Bungalow Colony, and across the street, the Royal Bungalow Colony. Each of these was about 1 mile from "downtown" Woodridge. I stayed at both of these bungalow colonies, and clearly remember, as I walked to the Old Falls in Fallsburg, seeing the Olympic, with its main house on a hill, perhaps 200 yards from the road that passed by. If you walked towards Woodridge, you came to the Claremore, and if you made a right turn at that point, you would come to Steve's Riding Academy, where I worked for a few summers.

I remember vacationing at Pleasant Acers in Leeds, NY in the Catskills when I was a teenager. My father's family always vacationed there. Does anyone remember this resort?
Alot of Italian people went there. I believe a Mr. Sousa owned it. It was such a fun place with lots to do. I remember Paul Anka's recording of "Diana" playing at the club house and me cha cha ing with a friend to the rhythm of the record. I remember walking into the town of Leeds (about a mile and half) have ice cream soda's in the general store and browsing around. A schoolmate of mine also worked there. His name was Jerry Carbone (he was a great singer) does anybody remember him? I will always have alot of fond membories of Pleasant Acres of my family getting together and enjoying ourselves.

I am still hoping to find out Nancy Toder's address, phone and e-mail address--not the author of the novel who also is an authority on women's issues, but the daughter of Archie and Shelley Toder whose married name is Nancy Sara McClosky whose cousins are Debby Zeitlin and Louise Forsyth Stein and whose grandmother was Mrs. Warshawsky. I have not yet located Emily or Allen or Milton Green nor their sister Linda who was married to Al (who ran the deli on Utica Ave. on the corner of President or Crown or Carroll St.), Carol or Binnie or Hank Jacobson, Marian Katz, Diana or Paula Kreech, Anita or Phyllis or Wendy or Karen Lobo, Larry or Bart Teitelbaum, Peter or Joe Onek, Mike or Isabel Perkis, but I have managed to get in touch with Paul Hindes, Eric Herbst, Eugene Cooper, Albie Muldavin Davis, Saul Amerling, Howard Heitner....

Yeah, I remember that bungalow colony well. I was friends with Bonim and I also remember a waiter called Eddie. I remember many were into music and played in a band. I also remember the blueberries (which are hard to get fresh in Israel nowadays) and Poppy's for blueberry pancakes. I stayed there every summer from 1970-1974 or so and went back in the late 70s.... great low-key place. Whatever happened to everyone?

It is amazing to see some of the names I remember so vividly as I child. My family came to Goodman's from previous summers Toro Hill in the summer of 1976 when I was four. I was well known for my memry and reciting the U.S. Presidents as a child. I went to summer camp every year through 1984. I had such great times in camp and just running around all day and night. I saw posts from Randy Schechter, Beth & Dawn Levy, and Brian Walker. Those were great days and I miss them a lot. I am going to try and go back to Woodridge in July on my way to Vermont and see what became of the old girl. I will be prepared for anything, I hope they let me on the grounds to see if anything is the same; the ball field, the swimming pools, the tennis courts. It wasn't a five star resort, be we has really good times at Goodman's.
Sincerely,
Peter S. Russ
