FORSTBURGH PLAYOUSE SUMMER THEATRE -- John C. Baron, 17:30:08 01/20/03 Mon
Does anyone out there have any wonderful memories of the Forestburgh Playhouse/Forestburghh Summer Theatre? I was there for a few seasons and they were the happiest years of my life. Perhaps you saw a show when I was there. It was truly a gem for the catskill area.

I went to Rosenberg's Bungalow Colony from 1967-1972.
Our Day Camp was called R & S Day Camp because we merged with another bungalow colony called Star.
It was a great time. Shame my kids will never experience something like that.

My name is Bob Levy. My Brother Cory and my parents and Grandparents went to Rosenberg's. I was contacted by Raffie Safier about a year ago and he told me that his grandmother Mrs. Rosenberg was still alive at 102!!

I Spent my wonderful, early teenage years at the Embassy bungalow colony on Rt 52 in Greenfield Park. I have been trying to get in touch with old friends on the Catskills Institute Website as well as on this one, but ive only been partially sucessful. I'm trying to contact anyone who remembers the area around Kass' Corners, Grand Mountain hotel,The haunted house, Fagins, the Tamarack driving range- or anyone who knew of certain individuals- Sandy Morris, Dale Brown and Paulette Moss who stayed at Embassy Bungalows with me; Janice Simpson, Judy Savits and Judy Seltzer who stayed at Hillcrest Bungalows, Leon Beckerman or Marty Razinsky whose families owned a bungalow colony and a chicken farm respectively. I'd like to know if anyone remembers Clay Mountain, the Gully,the open fields on top of Hillcrest mountain, Cranberry lake or the waterfall underneath the Rt. 52 bridge? It's been over half a century but I hope some of you are still out there and physically able to operate a computer. If so, please get in touch with me so we can share our memories. Mike Berman.

My family and I spent many happy summers at Paradise Park in the 60's. Conveniently located on "the circle" of all the other Highland Mills bungalow colonies and near to the bustling metropolis of Monroe, we had fun in the cold pool, broken down casino, v shaped ping pong table and the paddle ball court without a fence to stop the errant shots. Many friends were made, romances started and ended, and who can forget the way Max announced that, 'the fute and veg a table man is ere, on the preemises!" So are there any old friends out there...any former softball buddies>

Does anyone know where the FREED family is today? I am trying to a help a friend find her BIRTHMOTHER. Her name is Tamara, she was born at Unity Hospital Brooklyn, New YORK ON September 28,1961. Her Birth Cert. only says "BABY FREED" Her non id only says Birthmother comes from Brooklyn, 18+ years old(we thing she might have been younger) and JEWISH. She was about 7+ months pregnant in the Summer of 1961 and her family sent her to the catskills! ITS A REAL long SHOT... THE FREEDS COULD BE HER FAMILY.... Does anybody remember Sam Mankowitz, Toby Shorr or Harry Shain. I am desperately seeking any one who knew them in the late 40's and early 50's. I can remember going to the bungalow communities as a child but I don't remember exactly where. I have a letter post dated 1947 from the Sunshine House in South Fallsberg in c/o Sam Mankowitz and I am trying to find anyone who knew them back then, I was so young and have no memories of that time. Without someone's help those times will be lost to me forever.

I stayed up very late last night when I learned that this would be on. While not the best movie, it did capture the end of the Catskills era very nicely. It was nice seeing the shots of the Hieden, and the billboards and schenerery from the area.

It was either in the very late 40's or early 50's that we spent a summer in Thompsonville....at a Kuchelaine called "Schneiders Paradise". We would walk every day to Jacks Corner for the usual treats of childhood. I remember swimming in the Neversink River which was down a steep hill behind the barn on the property. My mother and her lady friends actually skinny dipped since all the men (except Mr. Schneider) were working in the city during the week. Also, the moms would walk to the hotels which were Schenks Paramount and The Raleigh Ratner (as they were called then). Probably the Commodore also. On rainy days we would catch a local bus into town (Monticello) to go to the movies. We were free all day to roam the fields, make up plays in the big barn, swim and do whatever wonderful things kids did then in the Catskills. I cannot remember how far Jacks Corner was from Schneiders...but it wasn't too terrible a walk. I have tried several times to locate where our buildings were...but the area is so changed I just cannot find it. Several years ago I did find "Jacks". It was grey with age, boarded up and very sad looking. The name was still visible. It probably was burned down by now.

The PG Bungalow Colony in Loch Sheldrake off of Route 52 has etched itself deep in our hearts and psyches. Our group has always maintained contact and meet. We all met when we were children with our families every summer and grew up together. Now our children are older than we were when those years came to a close. We were a great bunch of girls(and guys) and loved to hang out at Sakofsky's and go to the Strand Movies, have roast pork sandwiches at Herbies and Deli at Joe's. Trying to get into the Roxy and the Evans was a big challenge in those days and hearing Jimmy Homes in the Late Show was sublime. Walks on the road to town and rock and roll shows were a gas and the waiters at the hotel were oh-so-cute. We remember you all from K & K, the Moonglow, The Roxy, Nemerson, (mambo nights at the Raleigh and Late Late Shows with Lenny Schultz). Do you remember us? I have long been interested in this structure. When was it built and when did they close it down? It is a shame that this structure is not being used for anything now. Also does anybody out there know when the school in Woodridge was closed and when it was demolished?

I was wondering if someone can help me with the history of three blue and white bungalows that were located about a mile from the the four corners in Fallsburg (south?). You would go over the bridge, past the falls and go about a mile, just before the riding stables. There were only three that sat up on a hill, beside Mike Zeigers property. Well, a friend owned them about 15 years ago. I more or less spent my summers up there while I was a kid. He has sold them since. However I was wondering if anyobidy knew them, and if so, can they provide me with some history. I would love to BUY the property they were on since the bungelos have been torn down. For sentimental reasons.

Town and Country Store in Loch Sheldrake -- George Sampson Jr, 20:27:31 12/09/02 Mon
I worked at this store as a stock clerk and sales clerk for two or three summers for Lenny Jacobs, whose family owned the store. My family stayed at the rooming house run by Mrs Brown, one of the few African Americans in Loch Sheldrake in the early 60's. I would walk down the hill to work every day, past the Browns hotel and other lesser known resorts. Is it true that Murder Inc used to dump bodies in the lake? That was the rumor anyway. What has become of the Jacobs family? I believe the store was closed the last time I was there, probably in the mid eighties. Can anybody relate to any of this?

Baseball at Muldavinville -- Richard Ramras, 00:26:11 11/14/02 Thu
I remember those baseball games at Muldavinville (although I only played with the kids my own age) but I well remember Bob and Bob's sister Carol Strauss and your big, friendly dog Barry (at least I think he was friendly). I recall your family living in one of the three apartments 11, 12 and 14 which were part of one large bungalow located just behind the mailbox next to the baseball field (one summer) but I also have a slight suspicion your family may have also lived in one of the other apartments (8, 9 and 10) in the bungalow set back behind bungalow 1 and bungalow 2 near the Hines (Heinz?) and Wigderson bungalows (which were not part of Muldavinville but rather belonged to Mel and Matilda's relatives--Matilda's sister and brother-in-law Esther and Max Wigderson in the one next to 8-9-and-10, and the Hineses (forgive the unsure spelling) in the bungalow beyond that. If any bungalows still exist, they are likely to be either the Hines' or the Wigdersons'. The Hines family were George, his wife Betty and their son Paul (as best I can recall) but I forget how they were related to the Muldavins and Wigdersons. I believe the Wigdersons were related to Milton Berle by marriage, and Matilda Muldavin was supposed to be related to Betty Comden (or was it Adolph Greene--again, pardon the spelling). Bob and Carol--your parents were Reuben and Claire Strauss, right? I believe your mom Claire used to play duets with my mother Dorothy Ramras on the piano or piano and some other instrument (or was it your dad--sorry for the memory loss). My dad passed away in early 2001, my mom in early 2000. I haven't been up there in years, but Saul Amerling tells me he heard from Lenny Friedenberg recently. I tried to contact Lenny by e-mail but got no answer (assuming you were there the same year(s) the Friedenbergs were). Anyway, if you see this--hello! Fialkoff's Bungalow Colony -- Lou Sirota, 22:18:04 11/26/01 Mon
We were summer residents at Fialkoff's in the late 60's, early 70's. Spent 3 summers there in a clean free standing bungalow halfway down the slight hill on the right side of the main lawn. We had lots of fun, our German Shepard "farfel" also loved it, but I recall most folks may have shied away from our place because the dog looked menacing. Truth, she was a softy.
Jonathan and Jacqueline, our children, coluldn't wait to leave Brooklyn after Memorial Day to make the trip to Sullivan County.
Does anyone know of Fialkoff's? Is it still operating? Who runs it, if it's still there?

though my uncle hymy owned a shoe repair shop in mtndale approx 1920..our ties were really to woodridge.the FINE HOUSE was located right behind the high school up on the hill in back stood the main house and the barn. does anyone have a photo of this?

who will ever forget the time a renter cooked bacon in the kuchalayn kitchen. yikes!!! my grandmother went beserk. more to come.spent my summers there from 1940-1950.

Does anyone have any memories of Tamarack lodge from the 60's? I believe we were one of the few christian families that vacationed there. It was a nice experience and I have some funny stories of that vacation.

In the mid 50s I went to the Nemerson Hotel with five
other guys.....we were all about 19 years old....we were
all college baseball players.......and we were all Roman Catholics.

The first afternoon, the Social Director has a softball
game amongst the guests and we are all on the same team. In
the first inning we score about 20 runs and we are our way
to scoring another 20 runs in the 2nd inning. The Social
Director then split us up, but he asked if we would like to
play against another hotel and represent the Nemerson. Why
not?

For the next three days we play different hotels and we
kill them.....now we are minor celebrities. People are
sending us drinks....they introduce us at the evening entertainment....and we end up sitting at a table with
six young Jewish girls. Our relationship with these girls
was purely platonic, remember...it was the 50s...sex hadn't
been invented yet....at least for us it hadn't.

On Thursday night I was walking with a girl that I had become friendly with...her name was Honey. She said that
her father would be at the hotel tomorrow and that she would have to sit with her family....NO PROBLEM.

The following day arrived.....the fathers arrived....and we
became lepers....it was like we were invisible....no one spoke to us and all we got was an occasional nod of the head
......the staff was still talking to us, we hadn;t tipped them yet.

On the ride back to Brooklyn we were all accusing each other of doing something really bad to incur this type
of reaction....when our friend Sammy heard the story he
roared with laughter....a little culture shock for his goyisher friends.

Every Thanksging we would go up to my granparents home on a tiny town called Mountaindale. It was once called Sandedburg, before the fire. Anyway,my granparents had five chilren and they had children, so in in a big victorian house converterted to four apartements (my granfather the builder had to putter) we eat in a tiny living room and kitchen., but we all fit in somehow. Grandma made everthing from scracht. What fun. Loud noices and loving family. Those were the days. I really miss those days. Dose anyone have any memorioes to shae of those days. Oh by the way the locals would come and visit too. More to come.

i am so grateful for wonderful memories that i have of the 12 summers i spent in thompsonville and south fallsburg. years 1946 through 1957. i still visit the area at least twice a year. jack's corner, the old mill, the heiden, commodore hotel, schenk's paramount, mr. "pops" feller. those were the days! our "summer world" is long gone but we will always have our memories.

Anybody ever stay at the Evergreen in Mountaindale. It was right next to Bedicks Chicken farm and just up the road from the Nasso. I remember going there in the late 40's when it was a regular hotel with a casino and dining hall. Then one year the dining hall burnt down and they added a stove and refrigerator to each room and it became a "Kuchalein". My grandparents used to take me from Brooklyn every summer to stay with them, then in the early 60's my wife and I used to take our kids there. I was up there last in the mid 80's and it was very disappointing to see the place in total disarray and grown over. Just about the only thing I could recognize was the pool.

I never hear mention of this wonderful colony owned by Mr. Weiner. How I looked forward each Summer to the long car ride up to South Fallsburg. Year after year, I would meet my friends and it was just as if no winter had ever happend.
Steven Rosen, to this day I remember you and thank you for the wonderful summers that you were my best friend.
It's another world now and my parents are gone. They had the best and strongest memories. I, only the memories of childhood. The memories of blue berry picking, the thirty foot swimming pool, the walks in the forest and the hurt of a bad sun burn at the beginning of the season.
It was there that I learned to eat Vanilla ice creeam with long salty pretzels, to love old movies that were shown in the casino from time to time. There also, was the sharing and caring of my parents generation.
I passed where it was some months ago. Of course, it was no longer there except for the wall where we used to play handball. The wall where my mother tought me how to play and laugh.

When I was about 8yrs old,my parents rented a bungalow at the Commodore Hotel.Here are some of my memories.They have stayed fresh in my mind over the years.

The cardroom at the hotel where my father spent alot of his time,much to my mother's consternation.

The lake with the waterfall,rowboating,and an old abandoned spooky house nearby.

The grasshoppers,frogs,and turtles near the lake

The camp run by the Commodore

The pool and a lifeguard named Jerry.My sister once snuck in at night and got in much trouble.

A really mean lady next door to us,who used to argue with my mom all the time.

My 2yo brother throwing a plastic bowl at a wasps nest on the eave of the bungalow

I would like to hear from anyone who stayed at the bungalow colony around the 60's and their memories.My parents are deceased but I will always remember that summer they took us to the Commodre Hotel.

I couldn't believe it when I stumbled onto this site. The tears and memories just started to pour out. I grew up in Loch Sheldrake in the 60's & 70's- I remember the safe free feeling of the town. The Lake in the summer - when everyone would come up from the city. The Beachcomber - Pizza Shack - Kove's market - My mother also worked at the Raleigh Hotel while I was growing up and I remember what it was like to be a hotel rat! Working every job- meeting so many different people, mambo nights!!! I think we all had a better time than the guests. Sometimes its good to remember when.....

I explored the site of this resort on Sacket Lake today. There isn't much left. Some paved roads and a few sidewalks, some over-grown tennis courts, the walkway by the lake, a kidney shaped pool, a larger pool, and a trace of the foundation. I took a quarter-sized colored tile from the small pool as a souvenier. Does anybody know when this resort closed and/or was demolished.

Spent the first 17 summers of my life in the Catskills. Born in May 1958 - in the country in July - I believe it was Weiss bungalows, followed Spector's, Irene's,Wurtsboro Gardens,????, Wexler's Sunshine House, Sun Ranch, Camp Omega and Camp Kiwani. After that spent a few weeks each summer for a couple of years. Was there just a bit ago. It's sad how it's changed. Always thought my kids would spend their summers the same way. Exit 112 off the Quickway/Rt. 17. Across the overpass and then right 2 miles was Pinewood Villa ... the bungalow colony of our youth. Down the road was a very interesting place called Bill's Vegetarian Manor. At that young age we used to 'make fun' of them ... little did we know. Every Friday night they had a music show performed by 'folks' visiting from NYC. Years later I learned that Bill's was visited by many notables, including popular and famous jewish singers, actors and ... holocoust surviviors. We just made fun of their carrot cookies and 'strange' foods. For what it's worth ... I have been a vegetarian (dairy OK) for 30 years.

I have very fond memories of Mountaindale. Grew up in the mid 50's to early 60's going up every summer to a bungolow colony called "Deaners" which was located on Park Hill Road just off Cranberry Hill road. It was not far from Bedicks Egg Farm. My grandparents would get a bungalow or room in the "big house" every summer and I would go up for the summer. It was a very different life back then. No worries in the world, just what time the ice cream man was going to arrive was the biggest issue. Would love to hear from anyone who remembers "Deaners" or the brick house that was down Park hill road that had a lake in the back with a Fire Truck next to it. Several weeks ago, my son-in-law in Rochester, N.Y. asked me to look at a story he brought up on the Computer since I
was from the Catskill. My Father and later my oldest Brother were Editors and Publishers of the Livingston Manor Times for many years until it's demise.
The story was of a young man who loved helping out in the Dining Room and eventually became a Waiter there and I believe, at other Hotel Restaurants. It took place in the
Sha-wah-ga Lodge in the Catskills. I hope my son-in-law has
the hotel right. I printed it off and since returning to my home in Florida, cannot find the story. I wanted to send it to my brother who had the Livingston Manor Times for quite a few years. It is a wonderful story with quite a bit of history in it. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who remembers it. I would love to have it again.

My family stayed at the Manhattan Hotel in the early 60's. It was right down the road from the Woodbine and the Central Hotels. All of the kids, from the 3 hotels ,hung out together, including the band members. Some of the names I remember were the Baron Family from Franklin Square and the Morgenstern Family from Bayside. Steve Goldfarb was a waiter at the Central and played in the band. Norman Silverman and Marty Levy played in the band at the Woodbine. They came from Seagate in Brooklyn.Anyone out there who recalls any of these names, please contact me.

Yes I remember going to the Shady Nook in the late 1960's. The owner was Mrs. Briendal and she had a grandaughter named Wendy who was about my age who was in the day camp with me. The M.C. was Eddie Lewis and he had boys who were also in the camp. It was a much simpler time and we kids were happy playing pinball for a dime a game, while our parents played cards or Mahjongg in the casino.

I grew up in queens, but we always went to the mountains for the summer. My first memeory is actually Miller's Bung. Colony in Fallsburg...My grandfather knew him..He even talked him into believing that they were going to steel the pool...In 1956 we went to Kaufman's by the track...Old man Abe Kaufman was mayor of Monticello then...My dad would drive us up there right from school, he would leave on sunday nights come back up on firday. He took his 4 weeks vacation the last 2 in july, the first 2 in aug. Anyway the memories i have are awesome...I went to daycmp there and colorwar was the best. I was always on the blue team, my brother on the red. In all the years the blue never won...My mom had said that these are the best times of your life...enjoy them...I thought what did she know? What she knew was the truth...Now that my mom and dad have passed...I have great memories but wish those times were back...I kind of get misty thinking of them..but my memeories are so crisp and clear....I was blessed to have parents who thought of my brother and myself....I hope others post messages here....

On another message board I saw someone say that their family owned Beerkill Lodge and how if olny for a moment she could go back to those memories. Well we can.
Even though the mountains have changed I was the director of the camp at Beerkill Lodge and I remember as a young kid (not knowing any better)I got down on my hands and knees and scrubed the cabin where the kids would be meeting for camp. I then went through the toys and through out the rused ones and keep the good ones. We had some crayons, a little clay to share and some little tables . It was great as I can recall, because we were two groups and a family. As I got tips I went to Kass's Corner arcross the stree and got more coloring booking books to share. If the kids had a game and won I also bought something from Kass's for a prize from my tip money. You see this was just after the war and we were all we had, but we were so so happy.
Unforunally the enocony got good and the kids wanted to see were thier dads were and other parts of Europe. Our Mountaintains went down hill but not the memories and never the stories. They will live here on my board foever for our children.

A little known movie, 'Sweet Lorraine', released in 1987, was shot at the Heiden. Captures the essence of a Kosher Hotel in the late 60's. The Heiden has been closed for many years, but hasn't changed much. The movie can be had used, on line at Amazon, often for less than $10.00 including shipping, or new. I recommend it for anyone who lived the Catskills experience, visitor or resident. No, I have nothing to do with the movie other than watching it from time to time.

The schoolhouse I remember was a white , one-room building on Church Road. We passed it often, so my memory of it includes just seeing it from the outside during the summers we spent at "Forest Hill Farm," the property owned by my grandparents. One summer thought, my mother came up early, and so I went there for about a month. Everyone was very kind, but I was shy and did'nt make any friends. The work was fun and so easy after coming from school in New York. Anyway, I was very smart in those days. I can't really remember how I got to school, we didn't have a car,so I must have walked down the unimproved road off Church, about three quarters of a mile. I couldn't have been more than ten.

60 years old now but spent the best summers of my life during the mid fifties when I was a teenager, at Embassy bungalows on rt. 52, next to Kass' Corners.Had many friends at Grand Mountain hotel up the road and a number of "girlfriends" that I have been searching 50 years for...Anyone out there remember Sandy Morris or Dale Brown(from Embassy)Janice Simpson, Judy Savits and Judy Seltzer from a place called Hillcrest. All of you folks who love the memories of the Catskills in their heyday should contact the Catskills Institute, a historical preservation Society based at Brown University- that is dedicated to preserving the heritage of the bungalows and hotels of the jewish Catskills during the 40s, 50s and 60s. Casino gambling will probably revitalize the catskills but there can never be a repeat of those wonderful carefree days of the 50s when we were young and had no worries, when the Platters sang "My Prayer" and Elvis sang "Don't be Cruel", when IKE was president and all was well with the world.

1904..grandfather jacob fein comes to america and after a year or so in the lower east side moves to woodridge with his growing family...eventually it would total 10 kids,all my aunts and uncles.
grandfather built THE FINE HOUSE behind high school and opened a shoe repair store in the village.

1910 uncle hyman opens a shoe repair shop in mountaindale

kids scatter but every summerit was back to Woodrige.formerly called Centerville.

been sharing my Mountaindale memories on www.mountaindale.
com for quite some time.
I can tell you that my childhood memories have stayed with
me all my years. Several years ago I was about to have a
stress test when the only 'picture that came to mind' was
the brook behind the school. I imagined myself walking by it
and lo and behold I finished without any problems. (I'd
like to believe that my health and my thoughts really did
the trick!)
Of course, all the 100's of people I've met over the 35 years that my family lived there (1955-1990) will always
be with me! From Norma and Ben Alkins to Max and Dorothy Zalkin -not bad,heh?-I will always be indebted to my parents, Bernice and Gilbert Cohen, for making the move
to Mountaindale from Crown Heights, Brooklyn - officially on August 29,1955! (Actually, we were staying
at a bungalow colony owned by the Nudelman family on
Briggs Highway off of Rte. 52 near Ellenville from the end
of May through the 29th of August. Our furniture was stored
in the basement of our good friends, Ann and Nat Green, who
lived on Maple Street, Woodridge. That summer, the floods
came. Luckily Ann and Nat lived on the hill and we were
'nice and dry!')

In the still of the night, we gathered from all bungalow colonies, down the mountain roads to our respective villages to meet our friends. We hitched, when we got tried walking up and down the peaceful mountain roads, singing and dancing and looking for colonies to meet new friends. It was safe then, so the cars that picked us up were safe to be in. They took us to colonies that we didn't know existed. The guys met girls and visa versa. Some worked out and others didn't. Then when we got back to our villages we went to our candy store hangouts, such as Sol's in Woodrige, Neiderman's, Charlies and Dotties in Mountaindale and the fallsburg crowd went to Golds or the deli across from the movies. Pinball, frappes, banana splits, egg creams and dancing to the juke box (lindeys, fish etc.)were the highlight of the evenings. Those were the days. Does anyone remember them?

From Top Of The Court to the Catskills. A journey back in time ...

As a kid my parents took us on numerous 'road trips' and, I admit, many times in our pajamas (we were three boys - what a handful). To this day ... any excuse is a good enough excuse for a road trip anywhere.

I am planning a weekend (weeklong ... whatever?) road trip to the Catskills this summer with an agenda of simply ... having fun (of course fishing is a given). Please email me and add your name to the list. There's seems to be no shortage of roads to travel. I have no specific dates planned yet.

During 60-62 went to Colony Club across from Mayfair Hotel and near Hotel Gradus nr RT42. Remember Bingo and 5 cent pinball. Spur soda, Carlos Italian REst., Crossroads, Knishman.
My third or fourth cousons owned the place Lou and Sylvia Sackett. Remember, Rosenfelds, Hochman's, Baratz, Dottie and Abe Schwartz. The Lauries, THE Cohens their 8 kids includia gorgeous Lydia Cohen.
Somebody out there must of gone to the Colony Club. Get bacxk ASAP or when u get a chance.

We used to go to Okun's Bungalow Colony, Woodridge, NY in the early 50's. I enjoyed walking the few blocks into town and having a "Hamburger in the Bsket" at Dolly Madison's, followed by a movie at the Lyceum and then a hot fudge sundae at Chonin's soda fountain.

While I was at Okun's, they cleared a large plateu of land and built a softball diamond and a manmade lake. I took it upon myself to bring fish that I caught in other places back to the lake, as an attempt to stock it.

My parent's crowd included the following families: Goldberg, Goldberger, Richman, Rayburn, Edelman and I remember other families more distant from us named Weiderleit, Soifer, Gilbert, Greenfield, Levitas, Steinberg, Schwartz and Posner.
We used to have campfires where we baked potatoes, roasted marshmallows and grilled hot dogs. There was a swimming pool, that the owner's son, Sol Okun maintained, adjoining a solarium. There was a casino, used especially for Saturday night entertainment. I remember it had a type of horse race game of chance that you could win money from.

Half a century in the Catskills -- Murdie, 21:45:41 05/11/02 Sat
Grew up and lived in Woodbourne almost half my life, been in the general area most of the rest. The bungalow colony and hotel people were welcomed in the Spring, missed in the Fall. Our towns sprang to life in June, July, and August, and the coma set in again Labor Day weekend.

I miss the resort era as it was in the 60's and 70's. In memory it was a pleasure. The area is evolving, having lost most of the hotels and colonies. The towns are losing their drug stores, barber shops, beauty parlors,'Mom and Pop' food stores, and most can't support a luncheonette as the local jobs have moved. Peace, tranquility, homes, prisons, and convenience stores are the mainstay now.

But we who remember are a special breed. We were there. We are priveledged to have had a little time in the Twilight Zone known as Paradise.

1940 im 5 years old.my mother and i take the train to woodridge.mom lowers the window,the heat is stifeling (SP) annd the conductor tells mom make sure you close the window entering a tunnel or we all would be covered with soot and dust. she didnnnt and we were!!we arrive in woodridge and now the walk to the FINE HOUSE.all uphill from the station,up hansens hill and a left on a tiny road leading to my grandmothers kuchalayn..the family took turns on going there for the summer.the first time share. we arrive in the kitchen to watch grandma fein yelling at a lady for cooking bacon in her kitchen.

I was a camp counselor at the Concord Hotel in 1972-73. I worked during the summer, and on holdays, while attending college. It was such great fun. After hours, I was allowed to attend all the nightclub shows, and use all the facilities. The only qualifications - dress and act appropriately. The pay was almost nothing, but the tips were terrific! Some wonderful memories are still vivid in my mind.

I attended college in Delhi N.Y. on weekends I worked as a waiter in the coffee shop. After 1 year of college, dropped out & worked full time at the Concord coffee shop. Great job for about 1 year, returned to N.Y.C. & finished college. The coffee shop was great after the shows, all the guests came in for coffee & 2 halves(bagel) ice cream sodas etc.. I got to wait on many celebs such as Cosby, Steve & Eddy. The tips were great & the memories as well. As a kid we stayed in a bungalow colony cant recall the name but can never forget the memories. Those were the good ole days.

We come from The Bronx and now we trek to the mountains. We stayed at the Colonial Bungalows from 1964-1969 in Thompsonville. We had fun because all our friends where there and you would stay there the who summer with no worries. Your father would come up on Friday nights and stay until Sunday evening. Once a week you would have movies and you would get your supplies for the movies (for me it was chips and bottle of soda for 25 cents) Then bingo night. Then we would play at night ringaleavo. In the day time we would swim or somedays we have softball games against other bungalows. On rainy days we would read comics or play a game board game called "Risk ".
In the summer of 1970 we ended up leaving Colonial not by choice. The building collaped during the winter. so we ending up at Sunshine House just down the road. We stayed there from 1970 - 1974. It was nice and pretty clean bungalows. My parents and other parents that were at Sunshine House bungalows decided that it was time to buy their own bungalow coloney. They bought one in South Fallsburg and re-named it "Friendship Cottages". They still go to the mountains all the way from So. florida. This year was the first I heard that they might sell the coloney. Will see!!!

I remember, when my Gramdmother, Mother and Aunt ran the concession at the New Prospect hotel. They had a slot machine there. you inserted nickels (that was a lot for those days) and there was no age limit. i was always given nickels as I was a spoiled brat and I always won. Alan King used to babsit for me there and would put me in some of his skits.
The point I am trying to make was that the mountains always had gambling as far back as 1945.
Does anyone remember those days?

Hi Everyone! Thanks for the link, Sybil. I spent two weeks every summer (for about 30 years) at the Heiden Hotel in South Fallsburg; and I have lots of wonderful memories.

I Remember going up to the mountains to my grandparents after we moved from the mountains to Philly. Grandma made a feast, to be proud of. There was so much to eat and usually the towns people stopped in to say HI!.
The friends, I made while living there got together. It was great.
Sometimes there was snow on the ground, and it was so beautiful. I hated to go back to the city of Philly after having so much freedom and fun there.

I stayed at Sun Circle in So. Fallsburg from 1973 - 1976. Those were great summers!! Before that, I stayed at Meisner's, Fialkoff's and Silverman's. Did anyone else?

my first semester and the college wasnt ready. I had my first classes in South Fallsburg High school then to be transfered to sccc in loch sheldrake. I lived at the evans hotel. Those were great times.

My friendship with the catskills goes way back. My grandmother was the cook at the Commodore Hotel in Thompsonville before I was born (and I am 68). My husbands parents had a summer roominghouse in Ferndale after WW2. My husband,Larry Meltzer went to Liberty High School and graduated in 1946. We lived in Monticello and I worked at Budoff Outdoor Furniture until my son was born in 1958, we lived in Woodbourne. After my younger son was born, 1961, we moved from the area to Dutchess County. We now live in New Paltz, NY, but still go to "the mountains" once in a while. Especially to Cohen's Bakery in Ellenville for the best raisin pumpernickle ever made. Things are very different up that way now. Not many of the hotels are left.

I remember attending Mountaindale school. They had three grades in a classroom. My teacher was also my mothers teacher. School was fun, but I was always in trouble. That is Paula Blum(may she rest in peace) Charlie Weiner and me.
Does anyone remember the little old schoolhouse?
