We were a bit slow getting Dog Events done this month but better late than never, right?

The doggie social calendar starts to gear up with the advent of better weather, including a Newf Romp n' Swim at the Dog Beach of Downs Park in Pasadena, MD at 1pm on Sun 4/17.

Fri- Sun, 4/1-3, CHANTILLY, VA: Super Pet Expo http://www.superpetexpo.com/shows/chantilly/ at the Dulles Expo Center has a plethora of activities, entertainment and products for you, your family and your dog who is also invited to attend.

Sun 4/3 11am-2pm, BALTIMORE, MD: March for the Animals held by the MD SPCA http://www.mdspca.org/walkathon/walk_a_thon.htm at the Johns Hopkins University Homewood campus. This one is HUGE! You don't have to walk the pleasant 1.5 mi route, just come and enjoy the games, vendors, entertainment, food, demos, micro-chipping and especially the sights! And yes, there's free parking.

Sun & Mon, 4/3-4/4 8am-4pm, ANNAPOLIS, MD: The Potomac Valley Irish Wolfhound Club http://www.pviwc.org/Specialty.html has their regional specialty at Quiet Waters Park.

Tues, 4/5 5- 8pm, ALEXANDRIA, VA: Doggie Happy Hour http://www.doggiehappyhour.com/ resumes at the Holiday Inn Select in Old Town every Tues & Th from 5- 8pm through October (more details in Recurring Events below). Enjoy the pup treats, people treats and special prices along with the incredible ambiance of a courtyard filled with excited dogs.

Sun 4/17 1pm, PASADENA, MD: NEWF ROMP n' SWIM! Turn your hairy beast loose on the Dog Beach of Downs Park http://www.aacounty.org/RecParks/Parks/downs_park/index.cfm to burn off some of that pent up energy and to play and socialize with other Newfs. The dog beach is located in the northeast (upper right on map) corner of the park.

Sun 4/17 12noon- 5pm, ANNAPOLIS, MD: The Maritime Charity Festival (formerly and superiorly known as Green Derby Day) features beer races (including one with dogs), keg toss, kids' stuff, food and booze on Severn Ave in Eastport adjacent to Ruth's Chris Steak House.

Sat 4/23- Mon 4/25 TIMONIUM, MD: Three days of AKC all breed and obedience dog shows at the MD State Fairgrounds http://www.infodog.com/panels/md.htm scroll down to dates.

Sat 4/23 10am- 5pm, ANNAPOLIS, MD: Dogs can come to the Earth Day celebration at Quiet Waters Park http://www.aacounty.org/RecParks/Parks/quiet_waters_park/index.cfm. Lots of activities going on and free park admission. If you haven't already been there, take the opportunity to check out the fenced, off-leash Dog Park and nearby Dog Beach.

Sat 4/23 12N- 3pm, GAITHERSBURG, MD: The city of Gaithersburg puts on their Bark in the Park http://www.gaithersburgmd.gov/poi/default.asp?POI_ID=577&TOC=107;84;99;577 at Bohrer Park, Summit Hill Farm featuring a bone hunt, parade, dog trick trainer, obstacle course and photo booth, all for $8.

Sat & Sun 4/23-24, UPPER MARLBORO, MD: Cherry Blossom Classic Dog Show for ARBA (American Rare Breed Association) http://www.arba.org/ShowInformation/Cherry-Blossom-Classic-2005.htm held at the Show Place Arena. This show features those rare breeds you don't often see around town and is a Specialty (meaning you should see more of them) for some, including Mini Australian Shepherds, American King Shepherds & Cane Corsos.

Sat 4/30 12noon BOWIE, MD: Skyhoundz Disc Dog competition http://skyhoundz.com/localschedule.htm (scroll down to Md) at Acorn Hill Park, 3209 Stonybrook Dr (beside Bowie Community Center). The correct time is 12noon not 11am as listed on the website.

Sat 4/30 2- 4pm ALEXANDRIA, VA: Barkley Square Dog Bakery & Boutique http://www.barkleysquarebakery.com/ is having a baby shower. Yes, a baby shower. We want you to bring your new puppies (10 weeks to 1 year) to our Baby (puppy) shower. We will have treats specifically catered to the puppy's palette, to include shapes of pacifiers, baby bottles, rubber duckies and more. We want you to bring your photos to share and stories of how you were brought together with this new bundle of joy. We will have Spot the Gooddogz.org mascot here to welcome everyone. Make sure to check their website out. At 3 PM we will have a drawing to win a $25.00 shopping spree at the Barkery.

RECURRING EVENTS:

Every Tu and Th 5-8 pm ALEXANDRIA, VA: Doggie Happy Hour http://doggiehappyhour.com . Held on a spacious enclosed outdoor terrace every Tues and Thurs from 5-8pm (often runs later) from April through Oct, this is a remakable combination of Happy Hour and happy dogs. Free and cheap snacks (ie, all-you-can-eat wings $3.95, buy one burger get one free) and a farm wagon piled high with dog yummies combine with booze to make this a memorable social outing for people and canines alike. Dress ranges from cut-offs and a Tshirt to business attire and street parking can be easily found.

Every Wed 6pm ANNAPOLIS, MD: Disc dog practice at Collison Field on Pumphouse Rd at Truxton Park

2nd Thurs of each month ALEXANDRIA, VA: Dogs can join you on a 40 minute cruise of the Potomac River on the Miss Christin of the Potomac Riverboat Co http://www.potomacriverboatco.com/charter/MissChristin/index.html (one of the most difficult to navigate & least informative websites I've seen in a long while) which makes no mention of dogs being invited or the cruise times ( 6pm, 7pm, 8pm, 9pm ) or the price, ($8).
