May is blossoming with lots of fun dog events including a Newf Romp n' Swim on Sat 5/20 at 1pm.

Sat 5/6 10am- 4pm, RESTON, VA: The Pet Fiesta http://petfiesta.org/ and http://gooddogz.org/events/petfiesta06.html will be rocking the Reston Town Center. Jam-packed with FUN activities,a 4K walk, fashion show, costumes, contests, exhibitions, displays, and vendors, this one promises to be a blast.

Sat 5/6 10am- 3pm, GREENBELT, MD: Pet Expo at Greenbelt Community Center, 15 Crescent RD Greenbelt MD. Rescue groups, pet-related service providers, demonstrations-agility, flyball, dancing w/your dog. Dogs, cats, parrots, reptiles, rabbits, ferrets, etc. A ton of stuff going on and food is available. http://www.greenbeltmd.gov/index.htm .

Sat 5/6 11am- 4pm (maybe), PURCELLVILLE, VA: Dog Day at Breaux Vineyards http://www.breauxvineyards.com/ . Dogs get to parade around the winery green and win prizes; presumably their people can slurp wine.

Sat 5/6 730pm- 11pm, ALEXANDRIA, VA: Black Tie and Tails, a gala evening sponsored by the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria http://alexandriaanimals.org/~awla/special_events.cfm features all sorts of glitzy joy for a mere $125. If you're interested in this, better get your tickets now.

Sun 5/7 10am WHEATON, MD: Paws in the Park, Montgomery Co Humane Society http://mchumane.org/PawsinParkLRONLY.pdf A 5K walk & lots of other stuff at Wheaton Regional Old Ice Arena.

Sun 5/7 12noon Annapolis, MD: Pirate Pet Parade http://www.watermarkcruises.com/special_events.shtml Dress up your dog and promenade around Annapolis City Dock to discover the best Pirate west of the Chesapeake Bay. Prizes will be awarded. Proceeds will be donated to Tails of Hope. Judging and prizes by Paws Pet Boutique. Each registrant will receive a free t-shirt. Be aware that parking might be even more of a hassle than usual since the Volvo Boat Race flotilla is also in town that weekend.

Th 5/11 6- 9pm, ALEXANDRIA, VA: Barkley Square Gourmet Dog Bakery & Boutique http://barkleysquarebakery.radius3.com/index.php?pr=Event_Calendar# is having a Second Thursday affair, Dine With Your Dog, featuring a lasagna dinner.

Sat 5/13 830am- 1pm, ARLINGTON, VA: The 11th Annual Walk for the Animals at Bluemont Park for the Animal Welfare League of Arlington http://www.awla.org/walk2006.shtml . Pre and post walk events are promised but they must be keeping them a secret (as usual) since they don't say what they are.

Sat 5/13 12 noon, ANNAPOLIS/EASTPORT, MD: The irreverent Maritime Republic of Eastport hosts the annual grueling .05k Bridge Run (yes, you read it right) and Dog Day Afternoon http://themre.org/dogrun2006.html. Silly contests, demos etc. You can find street parking within a couple of blocks and enjoy the Eastport/Annapolis ambience. Get there early (race reg starts at 1030) and mingle with the excited crowd of people & dogs.

Sat 5/20 1pm PASADENA, MD: NEWF ROMP n' SWIM! Celebrate spring by turning your dog loose on the golden sands of the Dog Beach at Downs Park http://www.aacounty.org/RecParks/Parks/downs_park/index.cfm to frolic and swim with other Newfs. The dog beach is in the upper right (northeast) corner of the park; use the last parking lot on the right. Get there early and stake your claim to one of the picnic tables and grills located in a grove of trees by the steps to the beach and have yourself a cook out beforehand. Note: Gomez won't be there (and possibly neither will I) since he had a TPLO on May 2nd, 6 weeks of leashed potty walks only for the poor boy.

Sat 5/20 CHESTER, MD: The Animal Resource Foundation http://www.arfusa.org/ is celebrating their 1 year anniversity. However this is yet another laggardly website with no details available. Maybe they're celebrating it off-site at the HoCo Pet Expo on May 21.

Treat your canine companion to a special cruise aboard Lake Accotink Park's mighty pontoon boat. The cruise will enchant your dog with glimpses of ducks, geese and other lake dwellers.

Fri 6/2 7-11pm HUNT VALLEY, MD: The Humane Society of Baltimore County offers you and your dog a chance to get dressed in formal splendor together and dance the night away at the Black Tie & Tails Gala http://hsbcanimals.org/blacktie_info.htm held at The Grand Lodge. This show features those rare breeds you don't often see around town and is a Specialty (meaning you should see more of them) for some, including Mini Australian Shepherds, American King Shepherds & Cane Corsos.

Free and cheap snacks (ie, all-you-can-eat wings $3.95, buy one burger get one free) and a farm wagon piled high with dog yummies combine with booze to make this a memorable social outing for people and canines alike. Dress ranges from cut-offs and a Tshirt to business attire and street parking can be easily found.
