Sniff? Could that be Spring I smell? Or does Gomez have gas again...Whatever it is, there's reason to believe the cold may eventually leave so we can have fun outside with our dogs without freezing our keesters off. Let's hope it does so in time for the first Newf Romp n' Swim of the year on March 21, info below.

Sat 3/6 9am-3pm, MANASSAS, VA: The Nokesville Horse Society http://www.nhs-inc.org/ (you'll have to keep clicking to get to event details) is having a tack swap at Southern States (703-368-2165) which also includes a rabies clinic ($10) and fun dog contests at noon. Plus you get a discount on anything you buy at the store.

Sat 3/6, CHANTILLY, VA: Hound Hike, Northern Va Hiking Club at Ellanor C. Lawrence Park http://members.aol.com/nvhc/, scroll way down to the date.

Sat 3/6 10:30am -2:30pm, ALEXANDRIA, VA: Fun Dog Show followed by the St Patricks Day Parade hosted by the Ballyshaners http://www.ballyshaners.org/ and the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria http://alexandriaanimals.org/~awla/special_events.cfm . Enter (or watch) one of the many fun and silly contests (described on the AWLA page), then join the parade in dog-friendly Old Town.

Sun 3/7 10am, MARBURY, MD: Hike beautiful Purse State Park http://www.dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/southern/purse.html in Charles Cty, MD with CHAOS http://www.chaoshikers.org/EventSchedule.htm.

Sat 3/13 9am-4pm, GAITHERSBURG, MD: Colonial Newf Club's draft run-through and workshop http://www.cncnewfs.com/Calendar.htm.

Sun 3/14 1130am, WASHINGTON, DC: The hypocritical Humane Society of the United States wants to encourage you to form a stronger bond with your dog by leaving him home alone when you go to Pet Fest http://www.petfestamerica.org/. Bah humbug.

Sun 3/14 12n- 3pm, WASHINGTON, DC: The enormous DC St Patrick's Day http://dcstpatsparade.com/parade_info.html parade celebrates its 33nd year. You and your dog can enjoy the festivities and watch the parade march down Constitution Ave from 7th to 17th.

Sun 3/14 2pm, BALTIMORE, MD: Another St Pat's Day parade to go to with your dog, the Baltimore St Patrick's day starts at N. Charles & W. Centre St and includes a 5k run somewhere in the vicinity. You'll need the luck o' the Irish to navigate the difficult website http://www.stpatrickdayparade.com/parade.html for details.

Fri 3/19 5-630pm, ANNAPOLIS, MD: Burning of the Socks ceremony marking the official change of season for the sailing crowd. Participants are asked to bring their best hat, best dog and worst winter socks, the latter to be sacrificed to the flames. Takes place at Capt Sadler Park located on the Barge House Grounds at 723 2nd St in Eastport http://annapolismaritimemuseum.com/calendar.htm .

Sat 3/20 9am- 4pm, BALTIMORE, MD: Oriole Dog Training Club is holding a Clicker/Rally Seminar http://www.orioledogclub.org/seminars/Clicker_Rally_Seminar.htm, pre-reg by 3/5.

The website also has a good explanation of the tattoo process and why it won't hurt, unlike the time you got that giant hula dancer engraved on your back after you drank too much tequila.

Sat 3/20 1030am- 130pm, COLLEGE PARK, MD: Dog Owner Education Brunch, featuring a canine first aid how-to demo, holistic dog care lecture and, of course, a delicious brunch. All for only $35 and hosted by Mid Atlantic Great Dane Rescue http://mid-atlanticdanerescue.com/MD_Brunch.html. Not strictly a Dog Event, since dogs aren't invited, but it promises to be informative and helpful.

Sat 3/20 4-7 pm, ANNAPOLIS, MD: GRREAT's 3rd annual Golden Happy Tails Hour http://www.grreat.org/ at Paws Pet Boutique & Before & After. All dogs and their servants are welcome to enjoy treats, silent auction, raffle door prizes and games.

Sun 3/21 1pm, PASADENA, MD: NEWF ROMP n' SWIM! Turn your hairy beast loose on the Dog Beach of Downs Park http://web.aacpl.net/rp/parks/dp/index.html to burn off some of that pent up energy and to play and socialize with other Newfs.

Sun 3/28 11am-2pm, BALTIMORE, MD: March for the Animals held by the MD SPCA http://www.mdspca.org/walkathon/walk_a_thon.htm at the Johns Hopkins University Homewood campus. This one is HUGE! You don't have to walk the pleasant 1.5 mi route, just come and enjoy the games, vendors, entertainment, food, demos, $25 micro-chipping and especially the sights! And yes, there's free parking.

Sun & Mon, 3/28 & 3/29 8am-4pm, ANNAPOLIS, MD: The Potomac Valley Irish Wolfhound Club http://www.pviwc.org/Specialty.html has their regional specialty at Quiet Waters Park.
