“Who would Cousin Gilbert have voted for?”
Who would the late great Gilbert Napier have voted for, Barack Obama and Joe Biden, or John McCain and Sarah Palin? Cousin Gilbert died on April 21, 2007, one month after I had retired from the DMAX factory. Cousin Gilbert retired from the U.S. Navy around about 1966, after serving most of his twenty years inside diesel submarines, before he became a civilian electrician at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, from which he likewise retired. For about thirty years, he resided in Riverside, Ohio, with Vivian, his wife.
Gilbert made up for his former silent service around our Rowdy relatives and at our pre-Christmas parties at Mom’s house. Gilbert generously shared his accurate, brilliant educational enlightening entertaining honest humorous informative insightful wise witty wordly wordy assessments, assertions and assumptions about [Rowdy and Hazard] history, current and past events, and politics. This in addition to his personal sagas and stories about his Rowdy adventures and world travels, both above and below the surface, while aboard the boats and ashore. Oh, did I forget to mention that Gilbert was a reliable Republican?
This is our first election year without Cousin Gilbert. Today, Mom and I took a drive with Little Mary Rose Combs Jones
[wife of Mickey]. We ate at Frische’s, where the food is good and they do the dishes. We enjoyed a nice meal and conversation [without gossip]. After this folksy fun lunch, I drove and they rode with me to Riverside, for a visit with the Widow Napier. Inside Vivian’s nice mobile home, we sat around her kitchen table, drank coffee and ate little pastries that she had made.
While sitting and talking at Vivian’s kitchen table, we looked at some of the family pictures that she had displayed upon some shelves around us; including a few of a younger Gilbert proudly wearing the Marine and Navy uniforms that he had worn over four decades ago. He would have appreciated his military funeral service, during which an American Legion honor guard stood at his open casket. The firing squad lined up outside on the funeral home parking lot with their old M-1 rifles and fired a three-round salute into the warm April air there. Danny, his step-son, was there with this unit.
Mom, Vivian, Rose and I sat and chatted. I took a few pictures of them and myself for East Kentucky Magazine. None of us are excited or thrilled about this upcoming presidential election or the candidates. Before we left, I conducted a short séance to try and contact and ask Cousin Gilbert about whom he would vote for if he cared or could, making these three ladies laugh. Long before Gilbert died, he had become repulsed by these reliable Republican deceievers and true believers who had lied and tricked the hicks; because they loved government large as soon as they got to be in charge, these job exporters who loved cheap labor and open borders. The patriot party has not been that smart, those old baby-boomer Cold Warriors and Pentagon PAC porkers. We were not Bushman fanatics or fans because they increased federal spending and cut nothing. Nor did Gilbert care for or respect these delusional dependable diehard baby-boomer flower-child Democrats with their similar spending; who have also been keeping our borders open for more poor motor voters and their anchor-baby brats who would be voting for Democrats.
Personally, I still do not know for what or for whom I shall vote, like many millions of my fellow and female citizens. Can I finally prove to you that I am both in fact and in deed a nice white guy by voting for Obama? Can I likewise prove to you that I am a patriot but not a chauvinistic misogynistic sexist pig (in spite of what my nice ex-wife and a hundred or so former dates or mates might say), by voting for Sarah Palin [McCain’s running mate]? Could or would either one of them control or even end the collusion between Congress, The Pentagon and The Welfare State, and thus cut their bloated budgets and end their deficit spending? Or would it be best for me [and our nation] if I just sat this election out to complain and pout at the bar or at the coffee counter?
My dear old mama has to vote for Obama and I shall drive her to the polls in my little HHR car; although at those polls she will really be voting for FDR, as she and her pals and peers have been dependably doing during these past 76 years…unlike those other old folks who still like Ike. 0hhhhh…Gilbert, for whom should we citizen folks vote?
