Subject: DDN 6-7 Cowardly Kamunen brothers go AWOL
“Cowardly Kamunen Brothers Desert”
Once again, I reread this (Thurs. 6-7) Dayton Daily News clipping, “Brothers join ranks of AWOL soldiers”, regarding these 21-year-old Kamunen twins and their other 20-year-old brother, who deserted their Minnesota National Guard unit and the U.S. Army during basic training. Randy Furst’s story sort of excused and maybe even praised this trio as being anti-war/Bush heroes to zeroes. Because of their ages, I cannot call them “boys”. Nor can I call them “men”, because of their desertion, despite their tough-young-thug-poser-poster clothes and tattoos.
We have been at war, in Afghanistan and Iraq, for over four years. I assume that there are coffee counters, TVs, newspapers and magazines [with Internet access] in Carlton, Minnesota. Therefore, these three brothers and others should have been informed if not warned that military service is not without risks.
The tiniest teenaged woman, who is currently and honorably doing her sworn duty by serving in our military, is in fact and in deed more of a “man” than these three cowardly deserter whiners combined. It was appropriate, for context and comparison, that the Dayton Daily News placed and printed this cowardly dishonest deserter story under that one about Private William Bernice Clark, that 20-year-old soldier from Tennessee, who had lost his dog tags and his life while advancing across the sand of Omaha Beach, during the Normandy invasion of Tuesday, June 6, 1944.
Despite the condescending empathy, sympathy and support of anti-war/Bush activists, including media people, academia, uncouth youths, and fading foolish former ‘Nam-nostalgic flower children: being a “rural” high school graduate is no excuse for not doing your sworn duty (fulfilling your contracts with obligations) or for whining about changing your mind.
