Ok, not the biggest Oldham-concertgoer ever, but I thought I'd give some thoughts, based on the three shows I've attended, which were namely, at the Terrace Club in Princeton, NJ, Bard College in upstate NY, and Manhattan's Bowery Ballroom :
As far as energy coming from the stage, and intimacy or lack thereof, Will tours with a wide variety of musicians, making each time you go see him feel like getting a cracker jack prize (pre-82, when they had some substantial prizes.) If David Pajo is playing with him (short, dark fellow), you're in for a special treat.

He's usually re-inventing his tunes, for instance, he's known to do a hard rock version of "Madeline Mary" from time to time, acapella versions of other tunes.
Also depends mightily on what the latest release is and who else is on the bill. The Bard show was around the time that the Get On Jolly ep came out, plus he was opening for Godspeed You Black Emperor!, so the place was chock full of indie rock hipper-than-thous gamely talking away during Oldham and co (This backing band included 2/3 of the Dirty Three).
I guess one thing to get used as far as seeing Oldham live, is , leave the preconceptions at home.

I think it wou;d be great if there was a lot more dancing though, even if I'd probably just be watching myself.
