i was rather in awe. His appearance is very striking, like a man too big for his own body... he looks really strong. When he sings, you can see his face contort with effort and it's both endearing and slightly unnerving. Some of the tunes come out beautifully live; 'More Brother Rides', which he opened with, was thick with the enunciation which his vocal on the record lacks, 'Grand Dark Feeling' was performed solo, stripping out that disturbing wall of voices that builds up towards the end, but sounding a bit more... Johnny Cash? 'I See A Darkness' was tingling and majestic, 'Riding' was reduced to a simple, folky, solo piece, and became all the more sinister for it. There was a bit of between-song banter... Will bowed and thanked someone when they shouted 'Big Balls', listened to requests (thanks so much to whoever called for 'you have cum in your hair...'), shared the occasional joke with Jim White, and was just, well, nice. 'A sucker's evening' was incredible... some of those songs (64! 64!) just become completely overpowering in a live setting ('New Gypsy' was about the fiercest thing i've ever heard :'you can lay me out a place/ IT'S. TIME. I. HAD. SOME. LOVE. '.) All yer favourite couplets, brutally and exquisitely rendered. As good a reason as any to go to All Tomorrow's Parties next year. Except Shellac. Maybe.
