For what it's worth:

I actually emailed the EM at Toledo when they made the change. He told me first hand that the masks are dark blue, darker than the helmet color, but definitely blue.

I don't know anyone in the ath. dept. but every photo I've seen since the start of the 2009 season has been with a DARK blue facemask. People can mistake it for black because it is so dark. A lot of UT's home games are played at night as well, so that can make it tough for anyone to tell the difference. But I have the seen the helmets up close and they definitely don't use a black facemask. Sorry for all the controversy.
