Subject: New Virginia Tech Helmet (11/26/2011)

Virginia Tech wore a new helmet design today. It's the helmet from 09/17/2011, 10/15/2011, and 10/22/2011 with the stripes from the 11/20/2010 and 12/04/2010 helmet added. Thanks, I just added that one to the site. That's VT's sixth different design this year.

That surpasses last year's total of five designs.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and predict that, one year in the new future, some team (Oregon, Virginia Tech, Tulsa, or somebody else) will use a different helmet design for each game of the season. Oregon apparently has five different sets of helmets (I don't know for sure, but I am assuming they don't repaint them from one week to the next) so they could get to 13 or 14 different designs easily by using different color "O" decals on their helmets (or by coming up with an alternate decal or not using decals).

I could see that happening easily at VT. Assuming VT has the three base helmets (Maroon, White, and Orange), multiply that by two logos (Throwback and Modern) and stripes or no stripes and you get 12 combinations just from their existing elements.

Don't forget that they had the matte black one last year vs. Boise State. Different variations of stripes and different VT's (need different VT's for different helmet shells) make this very possible for Tech.

There are also multiple stripe designs, since their first Pro Combat helmet had an asymmetrical stripe.

I was just going with the current elements. Both Pro Combats and the 2008 and 2009 throwback helmets were auctioned online to raise money for Frank Beamer's literacy charity Herma's Readers. They currently don't have any of those elements available for use. Given their recent history, it's highly likely they'll add more elements to the existing set, though.

...letting "A" be the current helmet since 1999 and "B" through "E" the other alternate helmet designs in chronological order.
