I used SmartFTP for several years, which was a good program, but recently they decided to stop offering it for free to non-commercial users, and my copy stopped working.
Since then I've been using FileZilla, which I think is dreadful - the connections all time out after (it seems) fifteen seconds or so, and I have to re-connect and wait for the directory listings to be updated again. This seems to happen with every file transfer.

FlashFXP isn't free, but its great. I think there is a free version and a beta you can download. Also, CoffeeCup is a decent FTP thats free. Lastly, AceFTP is another decent one.

Have you ever used Leech? I think you can get it for free at www.download.com.

If you happen to use the Firefox browser, there's a free plug-in tool called FireFTP that I would recommend.
