Subject: Active club football programs

Charles:

A few years ago you produced some helmet designs for my Privateer Football website, which I put together to chronicle UNO's 1960 club football teams and advocate for NCAA football at UNO.

Some interesting developments that you'd be interested in...

In 2008 UNO started a club program and played two games. For the upcoming season, UNO will play a full 8 game season and has joined the Midwestern Club Football Conference and will play in the Southern Division along with Xavier (OH), Miami (OH) and Southern Illinois at Edwardsville. The Northern Division consists of Marquette, Wright State, Ohio State and Michigan-Flint.

The goal of all of these programs and the MCFC is to provide high quality football programs at the schools that do not play football...or to provide additional opportunities for students to play football at the schools that do sponsor teams (Miami, OSU).

Based on the games last year, these teams are generally well coached and well organized. All of the teams in the MCFC have decent websites. Even the MCFC has a decent website.

I know you've got your plate full and can't add a club football section to the website. But just a heads up because you had a hand in UNO's uniform.

The helmet design that the club team has chosen was one of the helmets that you designed for the Privateer Football website years ago. Thought you'd be interested in that.

If you haven't seen the website lately, I've made some changes as it now is more of a team website for the club team. www. privateerfootball.com

Something I forgot to mention above...and it goes to the legitimacy of these club programs.

A lot of them are popping up on the schedules of full fledged small college programs. Last year Xavier's club team was the homecoming opponent for NCAA Division II Lincoln University. This year UNO will travel to face NAIA Edward Waters College.

So, while many would just dismiss club football as not being "official" or otherwise legitimate, real varsity interollegiate teams are scheduling club programs as opponents.

Hi Jim, sorry for the late reply -thanks for the update on football at UNO!

>I know you've got your plate full and can't add a club
>football section to the website. But just a heads up
>because you had a hand in UNO's uniform.

Actually I have never ruled out that possibility - what has stymied me has been my inability to determine just how many such teams there are. Ten? Twenty? A hundred? A thousand? I have no idea! If it's fewer than fifty or so, and there is some way to establish what an "official" club team is, then I could probably add the category to the web site. But I would be reluctant to add helmet images for a small number of teams (say, ten or twenty well-organized teams with good web sites), if I thought there were hundreds more teams with no web sites and no chance of locating decent photographs for them (and perhaps even no "helmet design" for some teams).

I've asked here a couple of times if anyone could pointt me to a list of club teams, but no such list seems to have been compiled by anyone, and usually I just get a short list of well-known teams (Marquette, George Mason, etc).

Hey Charles. Thanks for the reply.

UNO is playing in the Midwestern Club Football Conference South Division with Xavier, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and Miami(OH). The North Division is Ohio State, Wright State, Michigan-Flint and Marquette. All of the teams in the MCFC have websites.

The conference website is http://mcfc.shutterfly.com

There is also the Seaboard Conference in which George Mason plays and a Southeastern Club Football Conference which has a lot of ACC schools like Duke, UNC and Clemson, but also includes Radford and Columbia Southern.

Texas-Arlington has a club team that UNO will play home and home this year. UTA is not in a club football conference.

South Alabama will continue playing club football, despite the school adding NCAA football.

The quality of football seems to be pretty decent. UNO will play two NAIA teams this year - Concordia and Edward Waters. Xavier played an NCAA Division II team last year. Pretty serious stuff for club football.

The Privateer Football website, www.privateerfootball.com, is now the official site of the new club football team.

Hey Charles. Getting back to you on this because you expressed interest in trying to get a handle on how many club teams are out there.

Here is a link to the National Club Football Rankings website.

http://ncfa.webs.com/rankings.htm

What they are trying to do is formalize a ranking system for club teams similar to the rest of college football. The top 20 teams are ranked and each ranking has a link to their website.

It's a start at least if you decide you want to pursue this.

By the way, UNO defeated Texas-Arlington, 19-3 at home to start the season last week.

Charles,

In doing a little research, I've found about 20 club teams, some of which are at schools that have actual football teams like Ohio St., Miami (OH), North Carolina, and Clemson. I can't remember the link, but there is a Top 20 ranking out for club football teams that just started this coming season. I will try to find the link for you.

Thanks, that's quite helpful!

So now we know that there are at least 20 club football teams - how many others that are not ranked, I wonder?

Charles: I posted the same link in response to another post of yours above. Sorry about that.

There are three conferences that I know of, all are pretty well organized.

UNO, SIUe, Miami(OH), Xavier(OH), Ohio State, Marquette and Wright State play in the Midwestern Club Football Conference.

George Mason and Walter Reed (with a few others) play in the Seaboard Conference.

UNC, Radford, Clemson, South Carolina (with a few others) play in the Souteastern Club Football Conference.

South Alabama and Texas-Arlington are among a few others that I am aware of that are not affiliated with a conference.

Charles,

Here are a few things that might help you out.

New York Times article on the University of Vermont club football team. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/03/sports/03vermont.html
BURLINGTON, Vt. — The University of Vermont last played a varsity football game in 1974. The century-old football stadium is now used only for soccer. And the football conference Vermont belonged to has disbanded.

A high school wide receiver who did not want to give up the game, Doug DeLuca figured started a club football team at Vermont.

Doug DeLuca knew all of this when he enrolled as a freshman in the fall of 2006. A high school wide receiver who did not want to give up the game, DeLuca figured he would just start a club football team at Vermont.

He faced a skeptical university administration, whose permission he needed to use the university colors and logo. He had to raise about $35,000 for equipment. He had to negotiate a million-dollar insurance policy and find opponents, coaches, trainers and a place to play and practice. Oh, and he had to find about 50 football players...
