That's been a topic of debate before. I agree with you that the Panthers initially wore silver helmets, presumably because the Champagne colored ones weren't ready. Is that game against Birmingham the first game?

Yes, the Panthers played at Birmingham first, and the home game against Oakland was their third game. This still leaves the Panthers' second game, at Tampa Bay, in doubt.
