I received an e-mail from the University of Montana regarding their helmets. I asked them specifically what their colors for the helmets were and this was the response:
We use "Montana Granite" a dark grey metallic helmet color (special order). This year we used a maroon face mask until the Griz-cat game. In that game we used the same helmet with a white facemask and white script Griz sticker with a maroon border. In the play-offs we used the same helmet with a maroon sticker and a black facemask.

To further support the information I was given about the Montana helmets. Here is a picture from their game vs Portland State in 2011. I have circled the facemasks and as you will noticed, they are not black but maroon.
So to clarify, the helmets since 2010 were a dark grey with maroon facemask, and starting with the Northern Iowa playoff game in 2011 they started to use black facemasks, but only for the two playoff games.
