The funny thing is that many of these schools - UTEP, Rice, Tulsa, New Mexico, Colorado State, Air Force, Wyoming, UNLV, Fresno State, Hawaii, and likely invitee SJSU - were all in a superconference monstrosity about 15 years ago that was a miserable failure. The WAC went to 16 teams in 1996, and the scheduling issues, traveling issues, and disparity between the top and bottom teams caused it to break up just three years later. Half of the conference broke off to form the MWC in 1999. It's strange to see these schools rush in to such a similar arrangement, only this time it's nation-wide rather than just Hawaii to Texas.

I agree and I cannot imagine that these geographically preposterous conferences will hold together for more than 2 or 3 years. East Carolina and Hawai'i in the same conference? Connecticut and San Diego State and Boise State in the same conference? Not for long, I'm quite certain.

While I agree that a huge conference spanning the continent won't last long, I would point to the Pioneer Football Conference as an example of the extreme limits that a conference can endure if the schools are all philosophically aligned in what the conference is trying to accomplish.

This mad dash to make sure schools don't get left in the cold by aligning with whatever conference is available doesn't fit that mold.

Like I said in my other post, we will see teams like Marshall, East Carolina and UAB could break away, and gather up other eastern schools like Temple, U. Mass., Toledo, Buffalo, the two Florida schools in the Sun Belt, Troy, South Alabama and any othe FCS upgrades that would fit like Old Dominion, Fordham, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, UNC-Charlotte, VCU (if they buy that city stadium and upgrade it), and others. You might see a new confernce form there. That will cut the travel down some. Sun Belt and the new monster conference can gobble up all the central and western schools that want to upgrade, and the WAC dismantled as a football conference. Big Sky all could be the new FBS conference if they all upgrade at once, and absorbed the reject Idaho.
