A number of other schools have done this as well. Iowa has basically had the same helmet for the last 30 years except for 5 instances - two historical uniforms honoring landmark anniversaries, two completely blank helmets worn in mourning of deaths, and one flag-pattern decal in honor of veteran's day. I'd hardly call any of those "gimmicks".

Wisconsin has also only deviated from their design twice in the last 20 years - one time for throwbacks, and another time adding a very faint rose petal pattern on the decal in honor of playing in the Rose Bowl.

By the way, in 2010 Alabama also had a very faint houndstooth pattern on their helmet numbers and stripe as part of their Pro Combat uniforms - I guess they've sucummed to the "gimmick" as well :-P
