If I understand correctly - in 1983 the Express used the "=L=A" logo on both sides of the helmet, but then in 1984 changed the logo worn on the left side of the helmet to "L=A=", presumably so that the "streaks" would extend toward the back of the helmet, implying "forward motion". If this is correct then I would want to add a seperate helmet image to the site for the 1983 design.

i think you are correct about that in 1983 the team used the same logo=L=A for the right and left side of the helmet making the logo "going the opposite direction" of the player's left side of the the helmet.
In 84 the left side was switched L=A= while the right side of the helmet was still=L=A
1983 right side of helmet =L=A
1983 left side of helmet =L=A
1984-85 right side of helmet =L=A
1984-85 left side of helmet L=A=
