Subject: miscellaneous preseason comments

If past seasons are any indication, we will probably start receiving lots of new helmet design reports by the end of this month. 2011 was probably the most active year since I started the web site, both in terms of teams switching to new "full-time" helmet designs, and teams using alternate helmet designs during some games (largely confined to the NCAA Division I-FBS teams). I expect 2012 to be considerably more active than 2011, with the phenomena of teams using alternate helmet designs continuing to increase and expand to the "lower" divisions. The situation may become nearly impossible to handle from a documentation viewpoint, but I intend to attempt to cover it for at least one more season.

There have already been MANY pre-season reports of probable or possible alternate helmet designs for the 2012 season; to name just a few of these teams - UCLA, Duke, Rutgers, North Carolina, Illinois, Iowa, TCU, Texas, West Virginia, Houston, Eastern Michigan, Harvard, Arizona, Arkansas, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Florida, Missouri, and San Jose State. I have not yet added most of these to the site for the following reasons:

1) Uncertainty whether the report is legitimately from the school (as opposed to fantasizing by fans);
2) Suspicion that even if the design is actually intended to be used its complete details may not have been finalized yet;
3) Suspicion that even if a design has been finalized and announced by the school, it may not ever be used (like the gray-on-gray design announced by Washington State last year).

There are going to be so many "real" new helmet designs this year that I do not want to waste any time doing artwork for designs that are not eventually used, so, for the most part, I am going to wait until the designs are actually used before adding them to the web site. A few new ones have been added because I received information leading me to believe that the design was indeed legitimate, finalized, and definetly going to be used in 2012.

Just so you'll know why I haven't added all the new ones we've talked about here for the last few months.

Also, I am finding very, very little free time to work on the web site presently, so I apologize for not adding some of the new stuff that has been mentioned recently (couple of new CFL helmets and one or two more Arena League helmets). I save all my emails and have the message board here to remind me of other things, so please be patient and I'll get to these eventually. As always, thanks for all your contributions to the site!
