Los Angeles KISS, Orlando Predators, and Portland Steel have ceased operations after the 2016 AFL season. Jacksonville Sharks left for the National Arena League and Arizona Rattlers have left for the Indoor Football League, leaving Cleveland, Philadelphia, and Tampa Bay.

Baltimore and Washington have been added, bringing the total teams to five for 2017.

[> Cleveland Gladiators on hiatus for two years + new Albany team -- No name, 18:11:17 11/29/17 Wed (173.9.211.149)

http://www.cleveland.com/gladiators/index.ssf/2017/11/cleveland_gladiators_will_susp.html

Renovations at Quicken Loans Arena has forced the Gladiators to suspend operations for two years and return for the 2020 season.

This takes the league down to five teams (again), as a new Albany franchise will begin play in 2018. The name and colors are not known, though it will be down to one of Empire, Fire, Machine, or Phoenix, and will be chosen by fan vote.

[> Tampa Bay Storm 1987-2017 -- Nameless, 13:31:41 01/22/18 Mon (140.192.50.102)

Make that down to four teams, because after three decades, the longest-tenured AFL team (and the last of the original four teams), the Tampa Bay Storm, alias the former Pittsburgh Gladiators, has ceased operations:

This now means all four remaining teams are in the Atlantic Northeast.

[> Albany Empire -- Nameless, 12:02:05 01/24/18 Wed (140.192.50.102)

Albany's AFL franchise will now be known as the Empire as the result of the fan vote was revealed yesterday: http://www.thealbanyempire.com/news/story/?id=13876

Do not confuse with the LGBT soccer club also called Albany Empire and established eight years prior: http://www.albanyempire.com/

[> ArenaBowl XXXI -- Nameless, 13:02:52 07/31/18 Tue (173.9.211.149)

This isn't helmet-related, but the latest ArenaBowl witnessed the Washington Valor defeat the Baltimore Brigade 69 to 55 in the latter's home field.

What's notable here is that Washington won the championship despite winning merely two games out of twelve in the regular season. There's probably no better indication of the Arena League's sharp downfall than that statistic.
