I've heard the argument that there is a big difference in the physicality of the play in Division I-FBS as opposed to the "lower" levels. Supposedly the players at the big schools are getting hit a lot harder by bigger and stronger other guys, so the wear and tear on their bodies is far worse. I can imagine that this would be at least somewhat true but I am skeptical that it would make enough of a difference to justify being a deciding factor in whether playoffs should be instituted.

The smaller schools have been playing a maximum of about 15 games per season. Both Minnesota-Duluth and Wisconsin-Whitewater finished 15-0 after winning the NCAA Division II and III championships, respectively, last year. With a 16-team playoff after a 12-game regular season, the two teams in a hypothetical FBS championship game would play 16 total games, 17 if they also played in a conference championship game. Is 17 games too many? Perhaps. It's a lot more than the 12 maximum that were played twenty years ago (11 game regular season plus one bowl game).

The whole idea of twelve games was to add income and lessen the calls for a playoff. If the playoffs were needed (and I am so against one) then the season would likely go back to eleven or even back to ten with conference championship games held Thanksgiving weekend. There would a playoff that would be for sixteen teams with each conference champ having an autobid and then the other slots would be filled with with the top remaining teams based upon the BCS poll. One limitation would be that only two teams would be allowed in from any conference. Even the independents have a chance to be in without special rules needing to be sey up as they have been just for Notre Dame in the past. Teams not in that would still have the other bowl games. All the tickets and television rights would be divided between all the teams of a conference with the team in a game. Merchendise sales would go to that school. That would be 15 games if in the championship game. For teams not in the playoffs, they would have the option of playing one more impromptu conference game before the bowl game seeason starts.

Theoretically this allows for the playoffs that generates cash, bowl games retain the show for those towns and money for all involved, it opens the door for any conference to win, it rewards a school for winning and still keeps the door open in case a teams does lose a game along the way, it gives the average school an option to play eleven if they like and not be obligated to play more, and it readies players from the schools that may have the chance to play in the pros.

I think this would make fans happy, ADs happy, television people and advertisers happy, and keeps players happy and "safe".

Some may argue that a team from the Sun Belt or WAC or MAC may not deserve to be in this, but it would give all a chance, eliminate the objections against the system from any conference, and just think of the sales and stories if some one like Troy or Idaho or Toledo made it to the second round or more. It would also free up more slots for teams to play in a bowl game that may not go otherwise. It would also force bowls to be more viable on it's own which hasn't been the norm lately.

I love the bowls and hate the playoff system as I think the debate adds to the year round excitement of college football. This just seems like a way to work all sides of this an hopefully keep the disgruntled to a minimum
