Cross-post from another forum: this is an e-mail from Uni-Watch's Phil, which he got from the original sender:

"Believe it or not, that’s the same green shell Oregon normally uses, minus the different side decal and front and back bumpers.

The helmet paint that is used is called Chrome Illusion. It changes colors depending on how the light hits it, or lack of light.

If that helmet is used in a day game, in some areas, it is bright kelly while others look dark green. But for a night game, some look dark green while others look black.

It’s supposed to represent the changing green of a Mallard Duck.

It seems to be brought up every year so I thought I would mention it. I do believe that since they let a separate company (Not Riddell or Schutt) paint the helmets year to year, that the mixture of shades may be a little different."

So it seems like they are the same usual green frames under different lighting conditions. In a semi-related topic, I wonder if the Jacksonville Jaguars' helmets, with the teal lighting on otherwise black helmets, qualifies as using the Chrome Illusion look.

In any case, it looks like we'll need a letter "K" for different Oregon helmets... (By the way, Mr. Arey, you designated two different historical Oregon helmets as "I".)

I did strongly suspect that those were the same green helmets that Oregon usually uses. I would assume that they have, what is it, 5 different sets of helmets? and that they are just applying new decals periodically to each of these sets to come up with the "new" helmets. This seems much more likely to me than that they would buy yet another new set of slightly-darker green helmets, or repaint all the "old" green helmets to make them slightly darker. But, even if we knew that they had done one of those things (bought another set of dark green helmets, or repainted the old ones a little darker) I would probably represent the helmets with a helmet image of the same color. There is simply no way to accurately quantify and categorize such fine color gradations, so I resort to depicting each new helmet with a blank helmet image of the approximate correct color, choosing from one of about 30 or 35 colors, this one being "dark green".

thanks, I fixed that. I may run out of letters for Oregon in a couple more years..
