Subject: 46 Division I - FBS teams used more than one helmet design in 2011

If I counted correctly 46 teams in Division I-FBS used (or will use) more than one helmet design this year. Probably at least half of those (I didn't count) used three or more different designs.

I expect this trend to continue next year, and probably well over half of the Division I-FBS teams will use more than one design. I may not be able to keep up with all of these!

And if this trend catches on with the smaller schools I think it will become impossible to document all such alternate designs, at least from one week to the next.

I counted 49...including UCLA, who has announced they will be sporting all-white attire vs. USC. Puke.

Gawd, that is so dumb looking. One of my favorite things about the USC-UCLA rivalry is the color-on-color jerseys. Normally it's a beautiful game to watch. But now it looks like USC vs. some random all-white team. It could be Wyoming, Texas, heck I don't know. UCLA has an iconic gold helmet and they don't need to muck it up by wearing white.

I wonder, Charles, if it may be easier to "designate" certain areas of the country or conferences, or whatever you might want to break it down into, to certain site contributers. I'm sure you could get a few volunteers, and have one monitor the Pac-12, Big-10, etc. This may be difficult, but possible.

I'll do the Pac-12.

Or maybe stop updating Canadian, JC, and NAIA fb and label it a "history" section. Or spend 1 weekend a month and make them all then.

Counting at the end of the season, there appears to be a grand total of 54 teams using multiple helmet designs this season (title game notwithstanding as I assume Alabama won't use an alternate)

Is this assuming the schools who adopted only a "9/11" helmet are included in this number?

If so, it's best we wait a year before we determine how prolific this really is.

Realistically, only Arkansas and Western Kentucky had only the 9/11 helmet change; the others who had 9/11 decals also used multiple helmet designs during the year
