Thanks, those digitized yearbooks are really becoming an important asset in determining helmet histories for the college teams. Unfortunately there are very few color photographs, and I have noticed at least one apparent error in one of the captions (an opposing team is apparently mis-identified).

I found a photograph here:

http://texashistory.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metapth61027/m1/161/sizes/l/?q=yucca%201961

showing a surprisingly intricate facemask on a 1961 helmet (second photo from the top, players on right side of photo), which makes me somewhat less concerned about the fact that I never came up with a separate "template" for those early years when most helmets apparently had a simple one- or two-bar "facemask".

I notice also, in looking through those early 1960s North Texas yearbooks, that there were very few teams with helmet "logos" of any sort prior to about 1965 - nearly all of the helmets were either "plain" or had uniform numerals on the sides (of course I already knew this!).
