Subject: alleged new Illinois helmets

Someone sent me a photograph of three alleged new helmets for Illinois today. I'm not sure where the photograph originated but they do appear to be legitimate. The photograph shows two orange helmets with white facemasks, each with "ILLINI" on the sides in a slightly arched style; the letters are blue with white outlines on one helmet, and white with blue outlines on the other. The logo is basically similar to the one shown on the 1974 Drake helmet at the 'Helmet Project'.

The third helmet is dark blue with that matte finish that became so abundant in 2011, and with an orange "I" with white outline on the sides.

I did not see any announcement of these new designs at the team's web site.

I have also seen a picture of a Matte Black helmet with the current logo (script "ILLINOIS") on the side.

Here is that picture you described. I think it's likely that Illinois will get a new look for next season. Their old helmet and uniforms are dated, and they just hired a new coach. Nothing shouts "new direction" quite like a whole new set of unis.

I think the above helmets are just concepts, but be on the lookout for at least one new helmet design next season.

Thanks, that is indeed the same photograph which was sent to me. We will probably see MANY more such photographs between now and September, as I am convinced that most major colleges are considering the addition of new helmet designs, if they have not already done so.

Here's the black one.

Has Illinois ever worn anything other than an orange helmet?

Also, note the lack of a decal on one side of that black helmet in the second posted image. It could be that they only wanted to use one decal for that prototype helmet, but they could also be going with an asymmetrical look with either a completely blank side or numbers on the opposite side. I guess we'll see. I tend to think they'll go with a traditional look in the traditional Big 10.

I've always thought Illinois could be doing a lot better helmet-wise. I like some of these alleged prototypes and have no reason to doubt that they are actually being considered for use by the team.

Uni Watch posted this West Virginia helmet. Also, mentioned that Texas Tech will wear a matte black helmet and a silver one next year at some point, according to the school. No pics yet.

That West Virginia one looks absolutely disgusting the way the light hits it. It looks almost green

Very sharp looking, and reminiscent of their mid-60's white helmet.

I used to collect baseball cards, but stopped when there got to be so many different versions of cards out there.

I currently collect mini-helmets, but have it limited to the NFL and Big Ten. Constant change like this might make me re-think even the Big Ten. I hope it doesn't dissuade you from keeping up on the site.

Thanks for all your work!

I've noticed that that sort of thing happens in one hobby after another. X comes along and people start collecting X; once X becomes really popular the producers of X make more and more different Xs, and eventually the collectors of X get discouraged because they can no longer afford to buy every X. I believe this is what happened to the stamp collecting hobby, which was immensely popular about fifty years ago. Now it's hard to find anyone to buy a stamp collection.

As for football helmets I can imagine all the alternate designs being a real impediment to anyone trying to form a complete collection. As an example I have 18 different designs documented for Virginia Tech from 1960 to present, but half of those have been used just during the last three years.

It is entirely conceivable that the number of new designs will surpass my ability to keep up, but I intend to try for at least one more year. I probably spend too much time working on the web site, but it is lots of fun and very interesting.

I know what you mean. Like the first person, I was turned off to collecting baseball/football cards when it seemed that each brand had more subsets than Oregon has uniform combinations.

Yeah, it seems like college football is just turning into a circus with all the conference realignment and teams breaking out new helmets for the sake of breaking out new helmets. This has gotten utterly ridiculous in my opinion.

I do hope you are able to keep up with the madness as I have thoroughly enjoyed this site since discovering it about 8 years ago.

North Carolina possibility?

Florida possibility? Supposed to be used in one game this year:

I've been expecting UNC to jump on the bandwagon, and I was surprised they didn't do so earlier.

Actually at this point I'm expecting nearly every BCS conference team to have alternate helmet designs in 2012, with the exception of a few teams like Alabama, Penn State, Southern California, Tennessee, and maybe Oklahoma. I think the turmoil at Penn State has increased the chance that they may consider an alternate helmet design - they may decide it's time to make a break from the past and adopt a helmet logo (though I still doubt they will).

The new head coach at PSU said he isn't going to change the uniforms. There is a section in this article about halfway down that talks about this:
