Subject: Navy's red football helmets

I had never heard of these before, but for some reason some Navy players apparently wore red (or maybe orange) helmets during the team's 1961 game against Army, color photograph here:

https://www.gettyimages.com/detail/news-photo/army-navy-game-navy-qb-ronald-klemick-in-action-vs-army-at-news-photo/136887823?adppopup=true

There are a lot of bodies/shoulders/elbows in the way, but you can quite clearly see a person on the sidelines wearing a red helmet in the lower-right corner of the photograph.

This reinforces my hypothesis that there are probably many surprising or bizarre helmet designs dating from the 1960s that may remain "unknown" unless color photographs are eventually located.

Trivia: President Kennedy was in attendance at this game.

I found this video on YouTube from a Pathe newsreel:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZLm9WR1sv4

It's black and white, but you can see that there are helmets that aren't gold (they look matte white in the footage). From what I saw, it looked like Navy's offense had these helmets on the receivers and tackles.

Helmets were orange not red.

I've seen something like that as recently as 1980

Notice how Cal Poly-SLO's QB and Middle LB Have different helmet designs

Found this, which might be helpful:

"Believing that Klemick would in fact have difficulty finding his receivers in a veritable sea of gold helmets, all of Navy's potential receivers entered the stadium with brightly painted burnt orange helmets and were called the "Flaming Mamies"."

Thanks, I was thinking the story was probably something of that nature.
