The NEC was down to 7 football members otherwise. While 6 is the NCAA minimum, it seems most conferences are very hesitant to go below 8.
Things are obviously premature but from what I'm reading, we should probably expect more to come: Bentley, Mercyhurst (both already D1 in hockey), and New Haven have been looking into moving up. And the MAAC needs a team if they want to replace Monmouth.
New Haven (a big school by FCS/II standards at about 5000 students) was very open about wanting to move up and would probably already be transitioning if not for COVID messing up their timeline.

Okay. Bentley, Mercyhurst, Southern New Hampshire, Le Moyne, Indianapolis, Central Oklahoma, Hillsdale, Grand Valley State, West Texas A&M, Arkansas Tech, Midwestern State, Angelo State, Delta State, Lincoln memorial, New Haven and others are in talks with certain D1 conferences right now on moving up. Bentley, and others.
Bentley NEC
Central Oklahoma WAC/Southland/Summit
Colorado Mesa WAC
Grand Valley State Horizon with football in OVC explored and said they want D1.
Hillsdale OVC
Indianapolis OVC exploring to move to D1 right now.
New Haven to NEC and wants D1.
West Texas A&M's ad said in the fall that they want to go D1.
