Subject: fun helmet statistics

Just for fun, I have compiled some statistics about helmet colors, blank helmets, usage of stripes, etc. among the American college teams in 2008. These stats are probably off by 1-2% because in all likelihood there are still some new helmet designs that were never reported.

Usage of "blank" helmets ("blank" meaning no logo or numerals worn on the sides of the helmets):

All colleges: 9.7% (74 of 722 teams)
NCAA Division I-FBS: 4.2%
NCAA Division I-FCS: 6.5%
NCAA Division II: 8.8%
NCAA Division III: 14.2%
NAIA: 15.2%

Usage of helmet stripes ("stripes" meaning any sort of stripe running over the top of the helmet, more or less from front to back; not including "tiger stripes"(as on the Cincinnati Bengals' helmets) or the stripes associated with the "wing" helmet design (Michigan and other teams))

All colleges: 262 of 722 (36.3%)
NCAA Division I-FBS: 48.3%
NCAA Division I-FCS: 37.9%
NCAA Division II: 29.9%
NCAA Division III: 37.2%
NAIA: 26.1%

Usage of player uniform numerals on helmets (large numbers on the sides of the helmet; small numerals at front or back not included)

All colleges: 17 of 722 (2.4%)
NCAA Division I-FBS: 1.7%
NCAA Division I-FCS: 1.6%
NCAA Division II: 0.7%
NCAA Division III: 4.2%
NAIA: 2.2%

Helmet shell colors listed in order of frequency (note that any such categorization is highly subjective, as there exists no clear distinction between, say, crimson and red, or between navy blue and royal blue - others may have placed a particular helmet in a different category)

All colleges
white 17.9%
gold 13.6%
black 11.1%
navy blue 11.1%
silver/gray 6.9%
purple 6.0%
red 5.8%
royal blue 5.5%
green 5.3%
maroon 4.8%
orange 3.7%
yellow 3.6%
crimson 3.6%
light blue 0.7%
copper 0.1% (Western Connecticut)

very cool, I like the blank helmet stats. How it goes up as you go down divisions. Sort of interesting. I guess both team #'s and budget would cause that.

I also found it interesting in helmet shell color. How high purple is.

I was surprised that purple was actually ahead of red.

I've always thought there were too many gold helmets and too many blue ones (lots of white doesn't bother me for some reason). I'd like to see more yellow in place of gold, and more light colors in general as opposed to black and navy blue. Why are more teams not using light blue, I wonder?

Probably because too many people think it's an unaggressive, sissy color, the same people who prefer black unis even if it's not the school color.

These are some neat stats. You should stick this somewhere at the bottom of the index of this site. You could even expand it by looking at historical trends by decade. For example, I would love to see how the invention of non-gray facemasks affected helmets and when teams switched to colored facemasks by year (a neat line graph showing the decreased use of gray facemasks would be awesome).

- there were at least 32 American college teams using plain gold helmets (some with stripes, others without) in 2008! That's about 43% of all teams using plain (logo-less) helmets - far more than any other color. I wonder why so many teams go for that look?

Notre Dame, and to a lesser degree, Navy and Army. Plain and simple. They made that look famous. Plain gold helmets beam tradition and football itself. There's something about a sparkling gold helmet that enamors people.

Was a little bored and looking at it again today,

I think an interesting one might be percentage of helmet colors used in a conference. IE. the Pioneer FL has 60% 6 out 10 helmets that are white. Maybe highest percentage of one color or facemask color type things.

It would be interesting to compare those stats to some years in past decades. White was probably far more common then; same for stripes and basic colors like red. It would also be interesting to go back to, say, 1980 and run stats on how many schools used logos that were identical to other schools or pro teams (I assume just for cost savings or a lack of creativity or interest in doing something novel for their team). It wasn't uncommon back then for things like the Philadelphia Eagles' wings or Georgia's G to show up, sometimes in different colors, on other teams' helmets.
