Subject: Multi helmets

We love football (esp. Michigan Wolverines), looking at helmets, and this webpage with all the great work Charles does on it; but we think colleges who spend money on different style helmets should use it for academics!

I basically agree, though one could make the argument that the expense of another set of helmets is but a drop in the bucket compared with how much money is generated for academics and everything else by football - at least at those schools able to afford extra sets of helmets (football does lose money at some schools).

Most universities' athletic and academic budgets are completely separate. The argument that money spent on coaches' salaries, for example, could be better spent on professors is a non-argument since the athletics programs don't take money from the academic budgets. All of the money the athletics programs generate goes towards athletics.

I could also argue about the overall impact it has on the athletic program and how multiple uniform combinations (including helmets) actually help bring in more money than what they cost. Think about it, how many great recruits have been sold on Oregon because (in part) of all the uniform combinations? How many more fan jerseys and other merchandise have been sold thanks to the wide variety of uniforms?

More cool uniform combinations = greater attraction to recruits = better football program = more money generated.

More uniform combinations = wider variety of merchandise to sell = more money generated.

Helmets are just part of the whole package. Think of all the uniforms as a replacement for an advertising campaign for the school, because that's basically what they are: beacons of the universities that say "hey, take a look at us!" when viewers are watching college football.
